A jury is selected for the El Chapo trial

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat

The El Chapo trial now has a jury.

Today, five men and seven women were empaneled for the trial. And some were not so happy.   One female juror left the courtroom bawling after Judge Cogan informed the jurors they had been chosen.

A few minutes after the announcement, Cogan said “we have one open rebellion.”  Apparently, the woman, who works for a media company, said her co-workers had figured out she was one of the potential jurors, which was upsetting to her.

Judge Cogan did not allow her off serving.  He could find no grounds to excuse her.

One female juror actually claims to have never heard of El Chapo, another had no clue what “cartel” was.  The woman was the sole person not familiar with El Chapo.  The others including the 6 alternates said they had heard of him through the news or television programming.

Then there was an enthusiastic Trump supporter who was asked by Lichtman if he thought El Chapo was a “bad hombre”.  He answered he didn’t know as he didn’t know him.  He made it to the last round before being axed.

The jury is an interesting mix.  On the questions of legalization of marijuana they all articulated liberal views, saying they believe in legalization.

Two of the jurors speak Spanish. A few have relatives in law enforcement, and three are immigrants.

1000 questionnaires were sent out to prospective jurors.  Of those only 100 were told to report for voir dire this past Monday.  Among the characters in the jury pool were a Michael Jackson impersonator, and a Medellin Colombia native who asked a security officer for help getting an autograph from El Chapo.

  1. This is going to be interesting I personally doubt these jurors are going to be so top secret like they were promised shit hasn't even started n we found out so much about them imagine if someone around the own circle or someone around them on there daily life wanting to make a quick buck n snitch them out. Or that fear of them thinking that its possible they are going to get snatched up or threatened or even scared to give an honest verdict. Gonna be interesting

  4. It's following the process for whatever reason. I sympathize for anyone on the jury who is force to server and hope their identity is never revealed. It's a waste of time to go through a hearing when we all know this scum is GUILTY. Let's get this over soon and stop wasting the taxpayers money on this scum. AMEN!

    1. For sure....that's why I get so pissed at the gov for violating his rights, and not really giving him time for a fair trial. All that added BS just opens the door for appeals, further motions, mistrial, retrial....all at our expense. I don't care about Chapo. I care that the fed is being so brazen about how they've handled handled evidence, treated him as a terrorist. He is innocent until proven guilty. The Twins and Damaso....all they need. Don't try and turn this into OJ. Hasn't New York endured enough bs lately. Poor folks can't get to or from work or school. All cuz of an illiterate lil old man. Tell me how he has nothing on some high level cats on either side of border. JMO

  8. Little by little the jurors numbers will go down and it will be up to the judge who will be the only main target . This is expected to last 4 months and its only been 3 days since the beginning of it's trial and jurors are already getting dismissed

    2. This is NY....bad things seem to happen to jurors and their families who don't play ball. How many times did they have Gotti on slam dunk cases, and he slipped away. And Chapo has way more juice globally than Gotti ever had. No way he walks,....but I would not want to be a jurors in this trial.

    3. Chapos has way more juice globally but gotti had more juice in NYC then chapo has. gottis trial was in NYC and so was his crime family. Alot has change since then. Chapo is not walking. The only thing to debate is does he die in the us or get sent home in 20

  9. I have family that live in the sierras between Chihuahua and Sinaloa, they all grew up really very poor.. this man has looked after my people unlike any other human being in history .. it angers me that he is called a scumbag and a POS .. why?? Because he traffics drugs, I don’t hear anyone referring to Big Pharma tycoons as scumbags and they do the same under a “legal” baner .. they too “ruin” lives you creating addicts and by imposing their ridiculous mark-ups on the medical and drug industry (why is it that we have ppl with health insurance paying up to $1200 a month for insulin!!) .. Chapo has helped more ppl than the REAL scumbags ... and I hope and pray that his lawyers get him a good deal

    2. Del Norte not just his cartel but all of them

    3. Good on you Del Norte. Hope things change for you and family and positives happen to mexico like colombia. colombia is a prime example of country on the rise after a brutal drug war.

    4. Man fuck all that, the dude was a giant middle finger to the biggest cartel of them all, the Mexican government. If anyone empathises with him, it’s because of that, not this brainwashed “he gave my cousin a job” bulleshit.

    5. You still don't get the picture del Norte

    6. That is what the prosecutors want, to get him to plead guilty and get a deal. He should hold out, with a not-guilty on appeal he can sue for bad treatment. The jurors can get rich on book deals, and appearances on TV.

    7. Well said del norte

  10. Chivis, Do you think Chapo will testify???? Most big shot lawyers never like their clients to testify, but I wonder if in this case it would be beneficial. He can play the poor illiterate farmer who had no choice but to pursue a life as a Narco. Once in, either claw your way to the top, or end up in a mass clandestine grave, or in a guiso barrel. If he gets cross examined he could come.off as very timid, and have translation problems, even though I'm sure an interpreter will be in court. Different dialects in Spanish can be hard to interpret just as any other multi national, cultural language. Thoughts????? Hope youre feeling better and have plenty of energy for this impending

    1. no.
but then again, what does he got to lose.
Emma decided not to do interviews. so he was never "humanized". you made some reasonable points.
      thank you!

    2. Most welcome, as always. Many thanks to you for your insights. You're kinda like a big deal around here! Jajaja

    3. I think they should have him testify to expose the us/mexican government working with cartels

    4. Chivis,

Have these kind of interviews ever worked in the past? I have never seen a case as publicized as this one so IDK. If I am not mistaken, I think she did a few interviews like 2-3 years ago for Spanish networks (IDK if she did for English networks as well). However, Mexico extradited him anyway. Do you think it would work better now that he's in the US and his lawyers keep exposing his conditions in jail? I mean, shittt! I saw the vids and pics of the cell, and being a claustrophobic and very talkative person, I can tell you I'd be dying in there. I understand whoever does the crime has to pay the price, but imagine how horrible it must feel to see a family member like that.

  11. Chivis in all honesty where you see this case going cuz I'm pretty sure this type of case with this type of person these jurors must be fearing for their safety and family to be able to give a correct verdict with out fear of retaliation. Which one of the ladies says even some co worker already have a hint of her being a juror for this case. I know I would think twice to give a guilty verdict if I would be at risk to get wacked

    1. most expressed no fear. It was a young female working for a media company. My feeling is she is at fault if her co-workers caught on, prob told someone or dropped hints.

The outcome of the trial will be guilty on enough counts for a sentence of life...as in leave in a pine box back to Sinaloa. I think, if the jurors are sharp, they will struggle with the murder conspiracy charges. Because evidence will be predicated on the smelly word of rats. But it will not make a difference. his sentence will be the same.

      Now that aside.

There could be a rogue juror in the mix. I was on a jury once where we had one. She was a tool. Sat there, arms folded defiantly shaking her head. she would not budge. she hated the defendant from "go" a cholo "i grew up with 'them'" she would not look at the evidence or lack there of. only a CW provided 'evidence'. anyway she hung the jury. 11 to 1. it happens.

who knows maybe a rogue chapo juror will hold out in favor of his 'not guilty' vote..just because. one never knows.

when you step in the room to deliberate it is a strange experience. You think, ok everyone is seeing the case as you do. and there won't be time to even order pizza. if I am the foreman i call for a vote right off to see where we are. and i am always surprised. it is very difficult work. perusing the evidence is painstakingly slow.

BUT everyone should serve. It is a wonderful teaching moment. it teaches one about our judicial process in a way that a book can't. ...Paz

  12. If i was on jury i would not accept a rats testimony for "certain beyond reasonable doubt". Somebody looking to pass the blame they could be lying to save thier own ass. Unless he is pn video killing or audio talking about killing or if there wete numerous independent witness who all said they seen the same thing..what is proof? Proof of a "Bigfoot" sighting has to be more than somebody saying "i saw Bigfoot" how do they know what they saw is Bigfoot or are they mistaken about who it was. I would need clear video proof

  13. Since they forced some of you people to be on the jury just find him innocent to get back at them for forcing you!!

  16. I attended voir dire just this past monday. Big murder case involving Irish mob in oklahoma. Didn't make the jury tho... still very interesting to see all of it play out and now a jury has been chosen for El Señor... that would've been cool to attend and possibly see him.
