Deaths from drug overdose reach new record in San Diego
Deaths from drug overdoses reached new records in San Diego County with a total of 527 fatalities recorded in 2017.

The main cause of overdose deaths was the misuse of prescription drugs with 273 cases, which reached a new record, according to a report from San Diego County, which was published this Friday.

The previous record of deaths due to the misuse of prescription drugs was in 2012, when there were 268 deaths of this type.

The deaths due to the misuse of controlled drugs had an increase of 8% in 2017 compared to 2016, the report indicates, when there were 253 deaths of this type.

The use of heroin was the second leading cause of death from drug overdose in 2017 with 86 cases, although it was a decrease from the 91 cases registered in 2016.

Deaths caused by the use of fentanyl also reached a new record last year with 84 cases, which was a big increase compared to the 33 deaths registered in 2016 for this drug.

"We have seen a steady increase in the number of deaths from overdoses caused by fentanyl," said the forensic office manager, Glenn Wagner.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, and 25 to 50 times stronger than heroin, even in small amounts.

According to health authorities, up to two milligrams of fentanyl can cause death.

  1. So now we know... pharmaceutical companies started the opiate addiction crisis... the abuse of prescription opiates led to the heroine epidemic... Mexican cartels sell their dope to supplement the addicts use of prescription drugs... and please somebody repeat that fentanyl is 50–100 x stronger than Superman...
The cartels cut heroine with fentanyl because it’s cheaper but they are too stupid to realize that when a US senator loses a child due to an od all bets are off..
Meanwhile someone’s getting their head cut off because Americans want to party...and it’s the US z fault because Mexicans want to sell drugs to kids... if the peso was worth the dollar then the dope would never leave Latin America...
50 mcg of fentanyl is a normal dose
250 mcg of fentanyl is an od
1000 mcg of fentanyl is one milligram...
    Stronger than Superman...

    2. It's crazy how the president of the United states blames Mexico for the drugs, when it is the pharmaceutical in America killing their own people. In Florida, Rick Scott pockets so much money from it. He has never did anything for Florida, but steal. He will not pass the Merryjauna law...yet you can get pain pills? Wake up

    3. The drug companies put out a pain scale... it looked like this..
      😟😕😒☹️🙂😄 🤩
Pick a face to describe your pain, how do you feel???
      This is no shit...
How do you need to feel???
Everyone picked the guy on the far right...
Pain or no pain everyone wants to be the emoji on the right...
The pain scale of 0to 10 was almost replaced by the stupid emojis...
And it worked to increase $ for the big pharmaceutical companies...

    1. A lot of these folks have accidently overdosed after using cocaine that was cut wit fentanyl. Its a dangerous game now buying powder on the streets.

      Delete
    2. They dont risk it knowingly. They cut everything with fentanyl now. Even cocaine (at least in the Philadelphia area). So, people go about doing what they would normally use not knowing theres some obscene amount of fentanyl in it, and die. Its literally like playing russian roulette now, even more so than before

    3. I doubt users know what it is or that it's in their "H" however like a guy above said the cartels are essentially killing their own clients. Makes no sense, unless the powers that be have something in motion that I cant fathom.

    5. 5:56-They probably look at the profit they make by cutting it with fent and figure oh well if the addict OD's well there's always another around the corner they can sucker in that there won't be any shortage of customers. They don't mean to kill them if they can only use as little as possible grains of fentanyl but might look at it as this guy may have swithed dealers (therefore cartels)in the future or he was probably a customer that was going to quit anyway so no big loss they tell themselves.

    6. Sol, keep in mind that sometimes it's not how good the drug is but how strong the addiction and withdrawals are that addicts have no choice but to use it heavily.

  3. I can not understand why there is so much demand in a country with opportunity and relative wealth to other countries. It is very sad and it seems the gobiernment should educate the young people instead of spending on helicopters, guns, and other toys for the police to feel like militar.

    5. Now you need to get high to COMPETE in the SYSTEM. Is not like the 60s were hippies used drugs to rebel against the system..now students do Adderall to study in a competitive and ruthless environment, workers ger high to endure 16 hours shifts with no overpaid time, etc.
This is the wonderful consumerist crony capitalism the land of the free loves so much. Anything else is evil communism even if you dare to question workers rights.

    6. drugs are available in each country in the world, only in the US and in MX the situation got out of control.
So whats the difference between these countries and the rest of the western countries.
Its the governments fault, education should be for free and more then just 6 classes...
Just inform yourself what happens to junkies if they get caught in the states and compare it with spain, or the dutch, Just to name a few and you will see the difference.
The drug politics in the states created this problem and many people are too easy minded to recognize this.

  5. Fent has no legs. Like smoking a cigarette. Strong outta the gate then tapers off quickly... h and synthetics like dilaudid last much, much longer. What does not make any sense economically is cutting cocaine and methamphetine with this trash. Scaring off the recreational market?? No dealer wants to kill their customers, or scare them away. One can shear a sheep many times but eat it only once. And yet, more and more, fentanyl is making its way into the cocaine supply and this is truly a head scratcher. One has to consider who exactly is behind this deadly trend and what the end game is. First, it was levamisol a deworming agent used on animals that is toxic to humans. Now, fentanyl and carfentanil have become the method of choice for killing off addicts who are a drain to the system.

    1. Exactly! Strong, fast onset; short duration: no legs whatsoever. And requires much more Narcan/Naloxone in OD scenarios. A brilliant & devilish substance indeed.

  7. I've been using fentanyl patches for over ten years. Failed back surgeries, bulged discs, degenerative disease... never a problem. Always taken as directed. Been clean and sober fifteen years. Am I an opiate addict? Yes but doctor recommended. Only thing I can find that helps. Legally. I'm being forced to go off fentanyl. This is where my danger lies. I'm afraid I will be in a position where I will seek out illegal treatment when the pain gets so bad I cannot cope. Who is to blame? Drug companies or doctors? Doctors have a duty to ease suffering for their patients. Insurance companies need to help with covering alternative treatments. Acupuncture, gym memberships, pain clinics, cannabis, etc.. none of which are covered. Sucks!

    1. you are addict not an abuser. My doc said Fent is a good drug when taken as directed. I said no to fent for a surgery. I was scared. But my mother used patches in her last stage of cancer and had no issues. You are wise to be concerned about being forced off something that helps you. Ignorant administration past and present never "got it" and think restricting meds for well documented cases is the path to winning the drug war. in 2019 trump has asked that opiates be cut back in rx by 20 or 25 percent. makes no sense. people will go to the streets, ODs and sjuicides will increase.

the drug war was lost at "just say no"

Talk to your doc about stem cell therapy. kaiser just began covering the treatment.

    2. my insurance pays for all of those things except cannabis. i have a friend who was on sleeping meds for 20 years taking more and more. she tried cannabutter just a half tsp each night and now after 5 months she is off the pills. and never slept better. she pays like 40 dollars for i think 2 pounds but it may be 4. she freezes most of it. she says it will last 2 years. i question that, but anyway it is cheap.

    4. I am ADA disable due to a severely herniated disc. Seven years no opoids because I am in Mexico where opioid Rx does not exist. I went to the EUA for hand surgery. Doctor Rx'd 10 mg oxycodone 5x day and 30mg oral morphine 2x day. I was required to report to him monthly with the prescriptions. He counted them all and tallied them. I always had some of each left over. They allowed me to walk. The opioid "crisis" in EUA is positive proof that people have lost their moral compass. Cannibis ANYTHING down here is a surefire ticket to a jail cell. BTW fetanyl patches did nothing for me...zero. Presently I am on a kidney killing regimen of non Rx - of TRAMADOL, VENGESIC, PARACETAMOL, and IBUPROFENO. An intelligent FDA/DEA would issue individual federal ID cards tracking Dr. Rx's, and Rx refills. What? An OXYMORON?Intelligent government?

  15. I guess, we,people, play vital rule in keeping our friends, relatives, or loved ones away from all this shit. The government (US GOVERNMENT) doesn’t give a fk that ppl are dying as long as they make money. The war on drugs is far from over and it will never be over cuz they country is making profit off of it.

    1. Really sad to hear. That is the crisis, fent laced drugs. it's a crapshoot. like prince. prime example of a person who was so against drugs yet his pain from both hips replaced had him addicted and unable to get pain relief so turned to the street. his watson stamped fake pills were not percocet but fent laced to look like percocet. that killed him.

if only he had a doctor, a pain management dr. to oversee his pain med administration he would not have died.

    4. The cartels ad it, dealers ad it, and when the cartels send only fent, they cut it to about 7% pure before sending it across the border.
