Two cyclists on round-the-world trip feared murdered in Mexico

The pair, from Poland and Germany, were found dead in a ravine and investigators now believed they were robbed and killed.

Two European cyclists who were found dead at the bottom of a ravine in southern Mexico were murdered, investigators have said, discarding their earlier theory that the men plunged off a cliff.

The cyclists – Holger Hagenbusch of Germany and Krzysztof Chmielewski of Poland – had been travelling the world by bicycle.

But after being reported missing by relatives, they were found dead at the foot of a sheer rock face in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Investigators initially said the pair appeared to have lost control on a winding mountain road.

However, after a group of fellow cyclists questioned that version of events, a special prosecutor newly appointed to take over the case said the cyclists had in fact been murdered.

“It may have been an assault, because our investigations up to now indicate this was an intentional homicide,” special prosecutor Luis Alberto Sanchez told journalists.

The motive appears to have been robbery, he said. Chmielewski sustained a head injury that may be a gunshot wound, he added.

Hagenbusch’s brother Rainer, who flew to Mexico to identify him, wrote on his Facebook page that both bodies had been mutilated.

“The Polish cyclist was decapitated and had a foot missing,” he said.

The Chiapas state government vowed to “intensify the investigation” to solve the case.

Investigators said the two cyclists met in the town of San Cristobal de las Casas on 20 April and decided to travel together to the ancient Mayan ruins at Palenque, some 200km (130 miles) away.

Chmielewski’s body was found on 26 April, and Hagenbusch’s on 4 May.

Mexico is struggling to deal with a wave of violent crime that left a record 25,000 murder victims last year.

Since the government launched a controversial military offensive to fight the country’s powerful drug cartels in 2006, the country has registered more than 200,000 homicides.

  2. mexico has become a trash dump. for the most part the people of Mexico are hard working folks but when you take guns out of the hands so they can not take care of each other then comes the trash. the U.S. should build a wall and tell Mexico to eat each other up but stay on the other side. Sad

    1. @11:40Am This sounds like it was written by someone who is famous for writing incoherent disconnected tweets. First you say Mexico is trash dump; then you say the people are good hard working people; then you switch to gun control and say the violence is because the people don't have guns to "take care of each other. The US has enough guns for everyone in the country to have at least one. How many stories a year do you read or see on TV of people using their guns to "care for" their fellow citizens? 50? 100? dO YOU really thank that makes a dent in crime. Then you switch to building a wall and telling all those "good hardworking people" to eat each other and stay in Mexico. What is sad is that there are so many people that think like you do.

  3. Not surprised by the end result of these poor cyclists. Robbery and killings have become a continuous occurrence in Mexico.
First reports given by officials to news outlets were that cyclists swirled off to ravine. As a former cyclist this theory did not add up. The probability of 2 cyclists meeting same fate was un-highly.
Leaving questions of either incompetence or hiding the truth by officials. For those cross country enthusiasts; avoid Mexico. There are safer places other than Mexico with beautiful scenery elsewhere.
Hopefully those bastards responsible for this meet the same fate.

    1. @12'00PM Time to wake up, you and I are on the same wave link though we may differ on the solutions. I wrote an article in 2012 that in effect called for "Special Measures" to fight the cartels. I proposed Public Hanging. Not just one at a time, but hang 50 or more at a time on the Plaza. These "monsters" are really just sicarrios that face possible death every day so the death penalty alone will not put fear in their hearts. And they think it wouldn't happen to them. But what they would fear most is being humiliated. If they see a hundred bodies hanging in the Plaza other sicarios are going to stop and think "maybe this could be me". They are going to see the compadres peeing in their pants and defecating in their pants with their tongue sticking out of their mouth and their feet and legs twitching. Some will realize that is how they will be remembered, not as a macho brave man who killed a lot of people. That will put fear in their hearts. Some of the capos and other bosses may decide to take their fortunes and run before they are caught and humiliated in death like that. Some kids and other young people may decide that don't want to go down that path after all. I think cartels would have a much harder time recruiting.

That would be "SPECIAL MEASURES". I even think "Bronco's proposal to cut off a hand of any public official convicted of stealing or embezzling more than a certain amount from the Treasury.

Horrendous problems which threaten a nation and for whick no other solution has been found calls for Drastic MEASURES. If you didn't read it, go back to

      http://www.borderlandbeat.com/2018/04/death-penalty-si-how-lethal-injection.html

and read it carefully. It is not as crazy as it sounds.

    2. It's wave length, not wave link.

    3. Wow dd.
Very explicit details pertaining the deaths of capos. Many can relate to the frustrations and necessary implementations to deter one from future behavior.
Why not just fix the problem from the top? Reference to government corruption. Its through these officials that capos exist. Hanging capos will only be met with the replacement by others who are chosen who sit on the very top.
The fortunes from drug trafficking alone overwhelmingly refute all evident outcomes for many. This is clearly evident today!
Money is the culprit here. Where dollar signs outweigh moral issues.
Maybe if better wages and jobs were available for many things would be better. Opportunities can be a deterrence to engage.

But I do agree that implementations of something other than what’s wrong today needs to be addressed.
Moreover; I do recall Broncos suggested response pertaining criminals. An issue strongly associated by loss of a family member. Probably the only candidate who bears the full impact of crime in Mexico.

    5. Only now that two European cyclists get murdered, now you think they should have special measures? I’m Canadian btw married to a Mexican in Canada, so my opinion is from abroad. What about the 35 murdered in Veracruz in 2011, or the 72 massacred in San Fernando? Or a casino in Monterrey being chained up letter patrons burn to death? Or any other act of savagery? If those 1000’s of atrocities have not evoked special measures then not much else will. It’s like only foreigners being killed calls for such measures. Anyone or society having to endure such senseless acts of barbarism should evoke these measures. As I said I’m am a foreigner that keeps his ears to the ground in Mexico.

    13. @2:17PM Thanks Canada for your input. The terrible murder of the 2 cyclist had nothing to do with mine and "Wake Up"'s views on special measures. As I stated in my article on as you call it "special measures" I stated that most of the article was written in 2012 (but I thought if still relevant today. "Wake Up" said in his comment that he had been thinking for a long time about some special measures were needed.

At least one reason that any of those special measures were never acted upon is because of the governing parties and the President would never act on anything that was "out of the box". I believe and hope that in the election coming up July 1 there are candidates that will have new ideas ("out of the box"). I hope the Mexican people will elect one of them who will have the balls to take some drastic measures that will lessen the violence and the corruption.

    1. @1;45pm You called the murdered cyclist "fucking idiots" and asked what were they doing there. They like the other more than 30 million Americans who visited Mexico last year were vacationing. They didn't think they would be part of the 75 Americans murdered out of that more than 30 million.

I suspect that the odds are much greater that 2 cyclist would be killed in a traffic accident in the US.

There is no question that areas in Mexico are dangerous, places I would not go even though I have lived here more than 20 years. But to say Mexico is not safe and don't go there is an uninformed opinion.

      Delete
    2. Yeah I take offence to that too 1:45.I'm glad DD shone some light on the actual very small percentage that do get murdered.BTW there have been Americans murdered in Canada too an even so called safer country than the USA.As a motorcyclist that has travelled quite extensively throughout Mexico solo and planning to do it again you are making it look like it's the travellers fault not the criminals.Sure there is extra precautions to be taken but that's like blaming the victim of a rapist because of the way she's dressed. That is so unfair like adding insult to injury.2 years ago I did have a fellow motorcyclist friend drive his motorcycle from Calgary to Argentina(I was jealous) for the winter and he made it.Plans to do it again too.Europeans are big world travellers too especially Germans. To be fair I would say it is somewhat more riskier to travel on a road trip ANYWHWERE than a fly to an all inclusive resort.Your chances of an accident are much higher with other vehicles, animals on the road and breaking down could leave 1 at risk compared to the almost 100% aircraft safety record of flying but then again you could have your safe robbed at the hotel or grab a cab and be robbed and killed by your taxi driver like that woman last year in Merida. It would be interesting to see the statistics on the tourists that are killed were they travelling on their own or did they fly in?I wish some journalist would do some research and write an article on it.

    11. @3:01PM. Comparing Mexico to Afghanistan, Somalia, etc. is comparing apples to oranges. Mexico is more dangerous than it used to be. But so is the US and many other countries. In the US in past years most people did not lock their doors at night but in a more dangerous world people today take smart precautions and lock their doors. The same hols true in Mexico; if you take smart precautions and get informed by State Dept. advisories, don't flash your money, don't wear expensive jewelry, etc. you are probably safe traveling in Mexico. Just be informed and be smart.

The most powerful producer of murdering killers for profit has been the US with its yearly production of Kaibiles, GAFES, and other death squads all over Latin America from Argentina and Chile to Tijuana and Matamoros, and after SCHOOL OF THE ASSASSINS WATCH, they have been turning their contracts to private corporations that have made their special brand of Murder Inc. But what makes be angry, next to the stupid press releases from mx government is that you read or hear nothing about in german newspapers. Its last page news in germany.
Foreign countries must put much more pressure on the mexican government, or mexicans start another revolution, otherwise killing will never stop.
And the left wing newspaper "Die Zeit" in germany is publishing a story on how nice its to be a jimador these days jalisco.

Including this and some cheesy pictures and you have some more guest at the "all-inclusive" compounds in cancun. Living in all these hotels, made with laundred drug money, build on stolen land.

  23. Mexico has plenty of guns. The Constitution guarantees the right of citizens to own arms, 38 cal and below. Mexicans do not have the right to carry outside their home. However with all the cartel activity the murder rate is about 21/100K while the USA is 5/100K. This is a very difficult problem.

Anche how do you defend yourself against criminals?

Even many autodefensas were disarmed precisely because of that reason, because they weren’t entitled to carry their weapons in the streets.

Tell the cartels to try and do in Texas the shit they do in Mexico, and see what happens.

  24. The road between San Cristobal and Palenque has always been one of the most dangerous in the country. Lots of rebellious indians that do not like outsiders. Even busses can’t travel on that road sometimes. EZLN graffiti everywhere. They were likely warned to stay off that one and if so were stupid not to heed those warnings. This is the part of Chiapas where group lynchings are commonplace for things as trivial as “he walked on my land” or “he looked at my woman”. By far the most dangerous area of Chiapas and the only you can not readily travel through.

Back in the 70s, one small ranch before Zacatecas capital of the state went rogue and started collecting tolls from even passenger buses, going north or coming south, everybody paid, respectfully, the road guards were on skinny hungry horses, the students and politicians used to call that rancho the Socialist Sister Republic of Troncoso, Zacatecas.

  36. Bad things happen all over the world. The key to this senseless and horrific act is the actions of the authorities in automatically dismissing the crime. For all of the horrors inflicted upon Mexico by the cartels and criminals it should be understood that they are a symptom of the underlying problem of a complete failure in the rule of law and endemic corruption of the organs of government from the municipal / state / federal police to the judges to the military to the presidency. This is the actual underlying disease which allows this type of lawlessness to flourish.

"Investigators initially said the pair appeared to have lost control on a winding mountain road".

The one dude was fucking decapitated! Jesus Christ.. It's amazing that investigators get away with saying shit like that down there.

Why does Mexico seem to have such a blood thirst for torture and extreme grotesque violence? I mean the fact they felt that torture and dismemberment was necessary is disturbing.

    1. @8:08 Phelpso why do you paint all of Mexico with the same brush and say "Mexico seems to have a blood thirst for torture...."

It would be more accurate and sound less racist if you phrased it "why do some criminals in Mexico have a blood thirst for torture...".

In your statement about "investigators get away with shit like that", referring to the original report of running off the road, they didn't get away with it for very long. A prosecutor appointed to the case said "in fact they have been murdered." Did you even read the article?

Overall, your comment does sound pretty racist.

It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with Mexico's society.

The world is an inherently violent place. Yet the insane desire to torture victims and commit crimes against humanity is unparalleled to anywhere else in the western hemisphere.

Yes, i read the article. The info stating he was decapitated was presented after the info stating they flew off the cliff. i wouldnt know that if i hadn't read the article.

Its the fact investigators EVER said "flew off the cliff" is what i found amazing. Clearly decapitation is murder. It doesn't take mastermind detective work to figure that out.

  39. I live in Mexico and my Mexican friends that live here do not think it was too smart to travel on bikes here long distance. First off DD it is much more dangerous here to ride bikes on a road where most have no emergency lanes and very narrow lanes. Also on many of the routes where there are emergency lanes people drive in them the whole time so people can pass on the left. It is a site sight to see how they do it. They drive the whole distance in that lane. It is very dangerous. Also there are so many areas that you are told not to even pull your car over to take a leak. All the way there are areas where you just do not stop unless it is an emergency. I have been in the car with my wife and friend and we were going from Chihuahua to Cuauhtemoc. About an hour away. They would not let me stop because they were assaulting and robbing people that pull over. There are many roads that are so dangerous that you just do not pull over, and Mexican people know that. There are nice people in some pueblos that tell you not to pull over in many areas. Those are facts. The resorts are another thing. Much safer. I have been pulled over and had 13 guns pointed in my face on the road going to Cosala. I thought I was going to die. Had to do some quick talking.

No tourist = no economy, la gente se esta enterrando ellos mismos. Violent acts like this will slowly diminish any tourism boom that Mexico is hoping for. I just thank god that my parents left that shithole to give me and my family a better life. I don’t mean to offend anyone but when people can’t even ride their fucking bikes and spend money in another country idk.

    1. That's kind of sort of blowing things out of proportion. I lived in Baja California for 3 years and never once experienced violence, let alone theft. I wont bury my head in the sand either. Yeah, violence is picking up there for sure. But I see people of all ages, from toddlers to old folks doing just fine getting from A to B, or celebrating a birthday, or just getting by.

I'm an American who truly appreciated and enjoyed the time I spent there. I'm not replying out of offense either, by the way. You are entitled to your opinion and you aren't wrong per se, there's obviously a lot of unsavory reports coming up. But it does not paint an accurate picture of day to day life in Mexico.

  43. On the other hand... I rode my bike three times from Vancouver, B.C., Canada to northern California with one or more friends. On each ride we traveled the coast highway in Oregon, on highway 101. The first trip, while in Oregon out in the country, some A-hole pulled over where we were riding, stopped his pick-up with a gun rack with gun, and yelled, "Get off the road!" I was riding with a Canadian cop, who later said,"Shit, I should have brought my gun!" Apparently, it is legal for a cop from Canada at that time to bring their service revolver into the country. After this weasel left we started again. Sure enough, he came back and yelled the same shit. Since we were in the middle of nowhere, we waited for close to an hour before we continued.
On the second trip, I was with a different guy, and we were stopped to rest and were about 10' off the road in a wide spot. A logging truck crummy (a truck used for transporting loggers into the woods) ran off the road and they tried to hit us with open doors. We both said,"Hell, if I only had my gun!" This was in the late '80s, so I imagine it probably is much more tame there with the acceptance of bicycle tourists. Still, there are A-holes everywhere.
In the late '90s, I was married to a woman from Argentina. We met two guys on bikes that had ridden back from Alaska after traveling all the way from Tierra del Fuego. They were on their way back to Argentina when we met them. Later on, we got word that they made it back safely. What these Europeans probably didn't have was the language. I'm sure the Mexican people would have warned them where not to travel. On one of my trips to California, we were warned by a bike shop owner not to go to Oakland, but to make our train trip back from Martinez. He said in cryptic language, "It's too dark in Oakland, you know what I mean?" We did.

    1. Dont you ever work lib? The issues in Mexico are not the same as bicycling on the american coast in the 80s. These bandits are the real thing and if only Mexico had similar rights for all to own guns then at least it would give pause to those bandits thinking of butchering innocents. Sadly, dont expect a change in gun laws anytime soon since the corrupt ruling class won't let it happen.
