The PRI: I dont want to know anything about them, Jose Manuel Mireles

Translated by Otis B Fly-Wheel for Borderland Beat from a Milenio article

Subject Matter: Jose Manuel Mireles
Recommendation: No prior subject matter knowledge required

Reporter: Angel Soto
With a serene but imposing face, Jose Manuel Mireles has the look of someone who has seen the horror in the first person. He came to FIL de Gguadalajara to present his new book "Todos Somos Autodefensas" from Random House publishing.

Among a small crowd that he made his way through while entering, he answered some of the questions put to him by Milenio.

With what historical character do you identify yourself?

I do not identify with any. I know the history of Mexico, I know the greatest men the country has had, but honestly and humbly, I would not put myself in any of their shoes.

What do you like most and hate most about Mexico?

From Mexico, I can not hate anything, because I am Mexican. If I hated something, from Mexico I would hate myself. I like my country. We only have one Mexico, we will never have another, even if we flee from this nation, we will continue to be Mexicans wherever we are.

What is it that makes you happy in this moment in your life?

That I am free.

What characteristics should a person have to be your friend?

Wanting the nation to have freedom, and seeking the truth above all things.

Will the PRI maintain the Presidency?

I do not know, I do not want to know anything about these people.

Dr Mireles then posed for photographs with those present.

It is available in Ebook from Google

A synopsis for the book
In 2004 Michoacan broke down
That year, the cartels, dissatisfied with the profits obtained from drug trafficking, diversified their activities and included extortion, kidnapping, looting and rape and torture. After a decade of unleashed violence, the inhabitants of the area reacted. Impoverished by the ravages of crime, forgotten by the authorities, furious and fed up, they decided to take justice into their own hands.

Jose Manuel Mireles Valverde is a central figure in this panorama. Founder of the self defense groups in the Tierra Caliente, he fought for more than a year against the cartels, but was arrested in June of 2014 during a Federal operation that was harshly criticized. Then it had to undertake other battles: the legal one: to get out of prison, and the morality, to break his spirit but he triumphed.

Dr Mireles has turned that dignified rage into the complete chronicle of the Michoacan auto-defensas. In this book, which goes back to the Purepecha inheritance and the fight that the Terracaliente gave during the Mexican revolution and the Cristero war, the doctor and commander narrates in detail the genesis of the self defense movement, as well as the adrenaline of the combatants and frustrating negotiations with the Government, which culminated in a historic betrayal.

  4. He is a good man, but he is not the man who was imprisoned. notice no fotos with any of his old close friends and collaborators. I say to hell with those who did whatever to this man and changed him until he was no longer a threat. It is heart wrenching.

  5. In the end he found himself defeated by the government. One of the many perils which government can bestow upon those who oppose the order of things. A nearly impossible task to combat. Moreover, the betrayal by his associates. Whether by corruption or by threats.
Fighting against a system that requires criminal behavior and activities to sustain their means of living. A means benefiting those elite and not it’s citizens.
Although respected and loved by many for his courageous work for hope and change. He is fortunate to live and walk. We are all aware of the dangers and victims in a country known for lacking Human Rights.

Definitely purchasing his book in support of a cause that many wish can undertake. To a failed system and government which lacks those fundamental principles of serving its constituents.
Best to you Dr. Mireles and B.B. for this article.

    1. The documentary alluded to is Cartel Land, which Dr Mireles was not too happy about and is thinking of suing the makers of it. I dont believe there is a separate documentary on the court case against him for carrying firearms for exclusive use of the army ( chicken leg ).

  17. I've tracked the good Doctor from the very beginning of his actions with the Auto Groups. Some of "us" believed he had the ability to bring an Arab Spring type event to Mexico back when many world governments were very worried about that movement. As time went on, it became clear the Mexican government was far more concerned with the actions of the good Doctor and those like him, then they were of any of the drug organizations. What he represented was a growing segment of the Mexican society that had lost all trust and loyalty to their government. The concept of "the people" taking action is and was not new to those who sat in Mexico City. What the Doctor became was a real threat to the stability of Mexico, if you could say Mexico had or has "stability".

The final link I was watching for was his ability to tie the rural working class people with the youth of the Universities. As it became clear the "link" may be about to take place, it became time to take action against the good Doctor.

Yes. the good Doctor was Mexico's best chance for social revolution and everyone in power knew it. the plane crash event failed and the government could not risk another blatant attempt on his life. To make him a Martyr could have been the spark that ignited the flame of Civil War. It was an attempt to gain his trust, just enough trust to get him to talk with them, that lead to the only action they had left. the charges he was brought up on had one goal, remove him from the public eye, but don't kill him. The next phase of the plan was to simply let his actions fade away as he sat in prison. Time. the folks in Mexico City needed time to paint a picture of how much they truly cared about the "little guy" in Mexico. So, a few key drug leaders were rounded up, but the money continued to flow. When that was not enough, they even placed the lead drug leader on the parade stage. It had to appear that Mexico City was truly trying to make a differnece, all the while keeping the potential leader of Mexico's next Civil War in Prison.

The flames of civil unrest calmed down, but the demand to let the good Doctor go did not. His so called friends were bought off or disappeared and Mexico City came to the conclusion they could let him free. a gamble they may still regret.

The good Doctor is no Saint, but few revolutionary leaders are.

Let us watch and see where Mexico heads.

The Wall has one impact the leadership of Mexico fear as much as they feared the good Doctor. Those who can no longer leave Mexico are far more likely to march on Mexico City and demand change. The social relief valve that has been the US border for over 100 yrs is being turned off. The pressure in Mexico is bound to rise.

I very much enjoyed your thoughtful post.
You mentioned "The Wall" having possible positive consequences for Mexico by stopping the "safety valve" of fleeing citizens to the USA.
I take it that you visualize many of the trapped Mexicans will vent their frustrations against the corrupt oppressors in government, business, industry, banking, education, military, and even politicians and the Church. Within evil pozole, is the main ingrediant, the narco cartels.

This evil Mexica pozole is everywhere consumed and nurishes every Mexican ... to not consume it means starvation and death. Everyday in Mexico, good people opt to survive by eating the evil stew ...they go along, stifle their fears, anger, and frustrations ... like cowed beings they don't even trust their own friends, neighbors, or kin, out of fear that this could endanger them!

Dear poster, I don't think "The Wall" will be much of a factor in bringing about positive changes in Mexico. Instead, IMO, whatever pressures become manifest, will find expressions into the rest of the world via criminal endeavors, such as those into Africa, Europe, and Asia. The Mexican frustrations for a better Mexico are just pipe dreams. IMO, Dr. MIRELES and the auto defense concepts made of good citizens is a dead and stinking corpse moldering in one of thousand fossa in Mexico.
IMO, Dr. MIRELES is an inspiring persona with great values and leadership qualities, I believe his time has past and that he has jut been transformed into a piece of Pata in the great pozole pot that is today's Mexico.

I welcome reading rebuttles to my pessimistic outlook.

I don't think an "arab spring" type movement was amidst in any other country other than an Arab state. Mireles, and I haven't seen anybody else perceive this, was simply embarrassing the Mexican government, showcasing their ineptitude, corruption, and exposing it to the world by the attention his movement was getting. He had to be stopped.

      @Mexico-Watcher
The citizens of Mexico are also at fault for corruption, they enable it with their tacit acceptance of it and glib protestations of it. It's become enmeshed within the culture almost as something of 'endearment'. Sad.
