Veracruz:Journalist in Mexico's protection program, shot killed by a commando

material From La Jornada

9th Journalist killed in mexico this year

He was in Mexico’s protection program, yet reporter Candido Rios and two other men died after being shot by  unknown assailants in Veracruz, local police said in a statement.

The correspondent of the Diario de Acayucan  and founder of  La Voz de Hueyapan  Ríos was gunned down late Tuesday by a commando when he was outside an Oxxo store located in the town of Juan Diaz Covarrubias, municipality of Hueyapan de Ocampo, Veracruz.

Ríos  became the ninth journalist murdered in Mexico so far this year and the 20th  in that region in 10 years.  The 9 include; Eight other Mexican journalists and a Honduran cameraman who had taken refuge in Mexico.

He was incorporated into the program for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists of the Ministry of the Interior, because he had received several threats.

According to the L.A.Times, Rios had just published on Facebook a video that may have placed him in danger, from the Times below in quotation marks;

"In a video uploaded to his Facebook page Aug. 13, he denounced a suspected corruption network in Hueyapan de Ocampo, accusing several officials of illegally using government money and cheating in past elections. In the video, which lasts almost 15 minutes, the journalist said he had been arrested in the past for having told the truth, and suggested that a journalist’s pen is no match for the arms carried by those who hope to silence him. “They riddle us with bullets, knowing that our weapons do not fire bullets, our weapons shoot truths,” he said. Still, Rios said he felt compelled to uncover the truth despite the risk. “I speak to my people,” said Rios, who had worked as a truck driver before he switched to journalism to help combat what he saw as injustices in his community. “It is my duty,” he said."
According to police reports,  Ríos was outside the commercial establishment with the former police inspector of Acayucan Victor Acrelio Alegria and a driver,  when several subjects used high-powered weapons against them.

Alegría, was killed at the scene, and the driver  died while being transferred to a hospital.

    1. If anyone reports them then they will end up the same way. Or worse yet. Their family. Thats a big cause of why no one talks. Even the toughest person will not risk their family being murdered in cold blood for their actions.

  7. Mexican authorities doing what they always do: The assailants who killed a crime reporter in the Mexican Gulf coast state of Veracruz appeared to be targeting two other people also slain in the attack, not the journalist, the country’s top human rights official said Wednesday.

  10. Problem is cartels infiltrate govt agencies easily, sometimes them sons of bitches know more than the same ppl who are supposedly running the show. Is why many big criminals choose to be guarded by a bunch of gorillas all the time because they know any enemy can get to them, corruption..

  11. I am betting that more and more journalists are reporting less on narco news.

    That and/or less people in MX are choosing to pursue careers in journalism..

    1. Can agree with you on this. However, American society is also facing civil liberties aggression. Censorship of press and speech has become a hot topic here in America.
      Journalists have been ousted by pressure from government and corporations from employers due to speaking and informing.

  14. What a joke! A program to protect journalists from individuals is a sham. Bunch of smoke to calm the human rights groups. That's all.
    Government corruption and executions will continue in a country operating with organized criminals.
