Weekend Blockades Paralize Michoacán After Arrest of Los Viagras

Translated by Yaqui for Borderland Beat

Burning trucks on Highway Siglo XXI
Francisco Castellanos J for Proceso
May 19, 2017

Michoacan lived through its second consecutive day of blockades and dozens of burning vehicles by Organized Crime cells operating in the Tierra Caliente region, Bajio and Zona Occidente of the state; which paralyzed traffic and caused great fear and panic among its citizens in five of thestates municipalities.

Sirens of Firemen, Civil Protection units, State and Federal Police forces were heard everywhere.  Businesses were closed and Public Transportation services suspended: bus and taxi transport and roads were all closed down. Bus service resumed 18 hours later.

Smoke from delivery trucks burning at city entrances was seen everywhere; schools of all educational levels canceled classes, which caused more fear and panic for parents as they came immediately to pick up their children.

The Ministry of Public security (SSP) intensified surveillance operations throughout the state's road network, with special attention in Tierra Caliente, to inhibit the blockades and the burning of vehicles that were being carried out in retaliation after the arrest of 22 suspected members of Los Viagras last Thursday, May 18.

Eighteen high caliber arms,"for the exclusive use of the Mexican Army", were secured along with tactical equipment and ammunition. Countless vehicles were stranded and/or abandoned along the highway.

The Authorities near Gambara, in the Municipality of Mujica, were fired upon during the altercation and subsequent arrest of the Los Viagras members and several were wounded.

Attorney Jose Martin Godoy said that one of the arrested was Gonzalo Verduzco Plancarte, "El Sema", a native of La Huacana, who has been identified as the alleged leader of the detained criminal group. "El Sema" is also said to be the right arm of Ignacio Renteria Andrade, "El Cenizo".

"He is the person identified as the one who led these criminal actions", Godoy stated.

On the instructions of the Secretary of Public Safety, Juan Bernardo Corona Martinez, the personnel of the Michoacan State Police installed revision points in Antunez, Cenidor,  El Letrero, Lombardy, as well as Highway XXI at the exit towards the port city of Lazaro Cadenas; additionally in Santa casilda, Taretan, San Angel Zurumucapio, Zirahuen, San Pedro Barajas, las Canas, Barrio Chino and Infiernillo.

Police officers then moved to the Apatzingan-Buena Vista Highway to remove two vehicles that were set ablaze, one belonging to the Freightliner Company, and a Nissan truck of the Caja Seca transport line. The area was immediately cordoned off and secured to avoid harassment by civilians.

In Paracuaran, members of the Michoacan police removed three vehicles which were completely incinerated at access entry points to a gas station on Franco Rodriguez St. in the Municipality.

In Jacona, there was a report of a person on a motorcycle setting fire to a Ford Ranger truck, who fled the scene and a search operation immediately intensified to locate him.

The Ministry of Public Security indicated that it will now maintain surveillance operations on a permanent basis throughout the State of Michoacan's roads.

The detained suspected narco-trafficking criminals were brought before the Specialized High Impact Crime Dept.,which has begun an investigative report on the aggression towards the security agents and will present it to the PGR in relation to the crime of violation of the Federal Law of Firearms and Explosives.

  1. Stupidity being displayed once again by such unwanted parasites. It's getting ridiculous. Such senseless behavior by a bunch of idiots whose actions are just a nuisance.
It's beginning to look like the beginning of crumbling society. With such frequent occurrences which have paralyzed the country in recent months. Government/ military and municipal governments are no closer to finding a solution for control.
Such a sad and heartbreaking situation.

    1. 26:21E42 You are using a very broad brush in many of your comments. There are several conflict zones in Mexico where "idiots" and "parasites" are causing a lot more than just a nuisance. But to jump from that to the conclusion that Mexican society is crumbling and the the country is paralyzed is using a pretty big brush to paint the entire country the same color.

    2. @DD, I actually believe his comment is right on the money. When there is an absence of law, and criminals reign supreme, and some might say that criminals actually run the country. Then it is exactly a crumbling society. The problem is that people like yourself, downplay the problems that plague Mexico. Giving more empowerment to the people that terrorize you.

    3. Unfortunately evidence is pointing to that direction. Where family members reside and state the following of such . Moreover where one insists that visiting will not be a wise choice for safety concerns.
Now please tell us otherwise where what you read and post is not what's transpiring. Family reunion has been relocated to the states due to the surge in violence.
This stupidity and uncontrollably senseless behavior and violence has stemmed far too long.
Definitely believe a more stronger approach with sentencing policies are necessary to protect and serve the citizens.
      Enough is enough already.

What nationality are you ? If Mexican/ American? Have you not seen enough ignorance from our people? The alterations of a lawless society from a country who's true identity is that of kindness and hospitality.
Sorry if I couldn't have sugarcoated it much to your liking. It's just ridiculous how such a beautiful place ( country) has become a security issue to all within and those who visit.
      Stating facts.

    5. @6:AM My nationality is irrelevant. I live and have lived in Northern Mexico for over 20 years. Luckily it is not in a conflict zone. I have family (of my wife) that live from Puebla to Monterrey, Monclova. My neighbors here get up and go to work in the morning.come home and sit on the porch and visit with family and neighbors. Kids play in the street and on Sat. night one neighbor or another will have a karaoke party. the kids in the street and the parties are sometimes a nuisance to me but are not a security. There is a niece in Monclova and a sister in law in Puebla and it is pretty much the same lifestyle. A son in the University in Monterrey and he rides the bus and takes taxi's all the time and he does not live in fear. I am online 8 to 10 to 12 hours a day mostly on BB stuff. I read more about corruption and violence in Mexico probably than anyone on here. I know better than most that there are areas in Mexico that security is an issue to "all within and those who visit" those areas. But that does not apply to all of Mexico as you state in your comments.

    6. I do respect your character. And maybe you are correct as to where such conflicts are occurring.
Having a better understanding and knowledge of who you are States a beautiful person. The upbringing and values of hard work and aspirations in life is what many needs in Mexico.
      Thank you.

    2. Los Viagras, CT, and corrupt Michoacano policias estatales all had a hand in the murder of Harry Devert, and the subsequent cover-up. Besides Tamaulipas, Michoacán seems to produce the most destructive organized crime groups, in terms of their effect on the community. It's almost as if the criminal culture in those areas is different from the rest of Mexico.
*disclaimer* Before everyone says "all cartels are bad, and all of them extort, etc.", I want to be clear that I understand that reality. However, for some reason or another, be it criminal culture or internal competition, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, and maybe Guerrero seem to have greater problems with the detrimental effect of organized crime on the community.

  9. Without citizens support, it's impossible to curb organised crime. But there are danger on civilian part too as the criminals are far more alert than authorities. Such a sad state. Government should stop sending an army and focus on saving civilians first. Once the safety measures are in place, take down the criminals. It's not a video game to send army to war with drug cartels without having a safety measure for a specific places. Focus on eliminating the criminal groups at one state at once. Too many targets may bring failure. Focus on one thing at a time. Take the list of recent purchases of luxury cars, track the owners activity, there are chances to even track phone calls of suspected persons, this is just an example, if government really wants to capture the criminals it would have done long back. If they catch the criminals, who would pay for the elections. Maybe they let the criminals to survive because of elections. It's not an impossible war, but the ideas should be to win rather than pursuing path not to lose. It's already a lost war though.

  13. Federal prosecutors in Mexico say they have apprehended a high-ranking operator of the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel.

The prosecutors' office said Sunday that Ivan Margarito Esquivel Garcia, alias "El Terrible," was caught in the Pacific coast state of Colima.

Esquivel Garcia, 28, was captured with a rifle and cocaine. He allegedly led the cartel's activities in the state of Colima and portions of the nearby state of Michoacan.

Esquivel Garcia is wanted for the March 4 murder of Carlos Sierra Santana, a founder and leader of a rival gang, "The Viagras."

The Jalisco cartel is considered Mexico's fastest-growing gangs, and one of its most violent.

Allowed to stay that way for a long period of time then when the heart resumes sinus rhythm it pushes semi coagulated blood into the arteries. The risk of stroke is very high. Blood thinners and Beta blocking medicines can render a victim an almost normal life. I write as a paramedic. Dr. Mireles needs to be aware of self examination and diagnosis. Various protocols bring a patient out of afib. Cardioversion is one. The best to this heroic man,
