Señora Miriam Rodríguez Martínez Executed at her Home

Translated by Yaqui for Borderland Beat

Leader of a Tamaulipas Activist Group Searching for the Disappeared Executed at her House

La Zeta May 10, 2017
Carlos Alvarez

Miriam Elizabeth Rodríguez Martínez, representative of the Collective of Missing Persons in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, was killed at her home by a group of armed men the night of Wednesday, May 10.

Around 22:15 hours, the perpetrators drove up to her house and called the woman by her name, and when she came to the door, they shot her with about 12 gunshots. The activist was seriously injured, and died when she was transferred to a local hospital.

Both the Citizen's Community in Search of the Disappeared in Tamaulipas and Governor Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca condemned the execution of the activist leader of the movement in the municipality of San Fernando.

In 2012, a criminal group kidnapped Karen Alejandra Salinas Rodriguez, daughter of the activist killed last night. Two years later Miriam found the whereabouts of her family member in a clandestine grave and provided information for the capture of those responsible.

One of the kidnappers of the activist's daughter, Enrique Yoel Rubio Flores, was arrested months later and interned in the Ciudad Victoria prison. However, last March he escaped along with 29 inmates who escaped through a tunnel.

The activist also suffered the attempted kidnapping of her husband, whom Los Zetas dragged out of their business. The woman prevented the kidnapping by chasing the criminals in her car, while alerting members of the Army, who managed to arrest the kidnappers.

Last month, Mrs. Rodríguez Martínez participated in a caravan , "Against the Fear"  in its passage through the cities of McAllen and Brownsville, Texas. The community she led requested assistance from the United Nations (UN) and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to protect human rights activists in Tamaulipas.

In August 2010, the Los Zetas criminal group executed 72 people - 58 men and 14 women - mostly immigrants from Central and South America. All were killed by being shot in the back, their bodies later stacked and their corpses left out in the open.

Amnesty International, the UN-Office of Human Rights (UNO-DH) and the National Commission of Human Rights (CNDH) all have condemned the assassination of Miriam Rodriguez Martinez.

    4. The new governor of sinaloa loves his beauty queens, and we'll get you there.
Mexican politicians were jealous of sinaloan narcos getting all of them beauty contestants, and now after much work, more narco-politicians are getting their own Booty Queens.

But they say their sad they had to leave their homeland. You mexicans are great people. Some of the hardest workers I know. And still try to give shirts off their backs if they could! Raise up Mexico send those lowlifes back to their makers!!!!

    1. The problem is that the mexican elite earn a fortune from corruption and those coming up with the bribes are the organized crime groups. If the elite said no to the billions the cartels offer the cartels would be eliminated overnight. How do you get the greedy elite in a country full of extreme poverty to do the right thing? A revolution might replace one greedy elite with another.

    4. IF the cartels had billions to spend, I swear they would have politicians paying them or working for free, but nooo, cartel members work for free, almost.

  3. What a brave lady.Good role model for somebody. She saw justice done but it's so unfortunate that her daughter's killer's escaped as they probably killed this lady.So brave too for standing up for her husband during his kidnapping.I don't think very many people would do that. She was lucky she ran into the army or she would have been killed right then along with her husband.

    3. Getting her daughters murderer and her remains got her marked, it happened fore, to the mother of Rubi Frayre Escobedo, in Cd Juarez after chasing her murderer from cd juarez to zacatecas, Rio Grande, and the Colonia Esparza in fresnillo,
Of course, governor Capulina Duarte denies locked the door of the state palace of governance earlier, before she was murdered, then el Capulina got the murderer killed in prison, because that is standard priista governors work book.

  5. From the happy news of Dr. Mireles' release to this senseless killing is disheartening. What an utterly courageous woman to be dealt such a cowardly end. May her soul be with her daughter's. Amen.

    1. 7:19 celebrate her, and that she existed, maybe get the main streets in front of the state or municipal government "palace" named Calle Miriam Elizabeth Rodriguez Martinez.
San Fernando keeps being terrorized by criminals and backed by the government far as I can see, no control of the night or the roads can't be a coincidence, specially when cabeza.de vaca.has been a polesia all his mother facking life.

  6. People should arm them self against this scum like in michoacan where this parasites will mess with their own people I understand places like sinaloa or Durango where people have no need to fight the criminal because they don't mess with the town but tamaulipas people have to make auto defensas

    3. @7:24 dude you are talking about the gravy train here. The government officials collect billions in bribes and would join the cartels to destroy such attempts. This is what has been happening for a long time.

Look at the Zapatista movement in the 80s which was a movement against corruption and oppresion. The govt created GAFE (with US support) to crush it and the GAFE was the craddle of the ZETAS.

    4. 12:14 in Tamaulipas and in Michoacan, soldiers, marinas, and all the police corporations, are majority, have best weapons, career military men in cbatge, assured salaries, and are much too much into double dipping with 24 or 48 hours on the job for 24 and 48 hours working as hawks for the criminals, for the same or more pay, police in tamaulipas have had their wages doubled, even under Viejidio Cantú, and it did not work, because Cantu surendered to the Juerza Herculos who won the policing job contract in Tamaulipass...that is the danger with "Private Security" contractors anywhere in the world, they make sure their services are needed, before, during and after the need is understood, PRIVATE MILITARY.CONTRACTORS are being found offering their services in "hot spots" all over the world, "governor cabeza de güey" would be no exception, his FUERZA DELICTIVA TAMAULIPAS is getting state wide recognition with people that know they used to be federal police officers associates of him, "cabeza de güey".

    1. Very few are successful fighting the cartels alone. The cards are stacked against because it's not only the cartels but the police and corrupt government. Most civil leaders in Mexico end up this way.

    2. Your comment is worthless. Id rather die a heroes death, than run like a coward. She fought for others. Is there a worthier cause? She took an honorable risk. She wasn't directly fighting against the cartel, she was trying to seek closure for the families of the disappeared. Think before you post

    Shame on who was responsible.
Unfortunately many like her have fallen victim to these criminals but are not mentioned nor aware. The perils of what many face in a country where to speak out against injustices or change comes with deadly consequences.
Condolences and prayers to the family.

  16. A sad time indeed. Rest in peace to Miriam. A REAL hero! So sad that it takes a real hero to deal with the highest calibre of cowards. It takes someone with true courage to stand up, to put the value of others' lives so far above their own that their days might be numbered because of it. To all the real heroes like Miriam, ones that will the masses will ignore, in favour of idiots like Steve Jobs, I hope she rests knowing that the torch will always be lit. Revolution will come and all these cowards in Mexico will have their eyes shaved with the sword one day.

Rest in peace. People have to stand up right now.
