Gunmen Rob Busload of Federal Police Officers in Mexico

Posted by DD republished from New York Times

MEXICO CITY — Authorities in Mexico say gunmen have assaulted and robbed a bus full of federal police.

The National Security Commission reports that the bus was carrying 29 unarmed officers dressed in civilian clothes Monday night to Mexico City, where they were to be on leave after 25 straight days on duty in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco.

The commission says the driver pulled over to check a mechanical problem near a toll booth in the state of Morelos. Armed men then boarded the bus, threatened him and the passengers and relieved them of their possessions.

A statement late Thursday says the officers did not resist in order to avoid injuries or loss of life. Authorities are searching for the robbers.

  1. Conveniently making a "stop" for a problema...How does a large group of "lawmen" go about unarmed?

    1. @5:50PM the politicians, governors, etc. have armed body guards and armored cars. They don't ride the bus. Besides that, the thieves may work for them.

  17. DD, the mayhem in Michoacán has grown. I posted two links yesterday (AD update and 7 avocado pickers massacred) later, mass arrests and narco roadblocks followed. Forum has the journalist grabbed yesterday, too. The 7 massacred were working the land once owned by the deceased (??) El Chayo. Michoacán needs Dr. Mireles more than ever.

    1. @9:40PM. I always try to follow up on links you send us, but I did not see the comment you posted with the links. Having more than one moderator sometimes complicates things. But I just scrolled down the last 400 comments posted and still didn't find it. Could you post those links again please.

I agree with you that Michoacan needs Mireles and I don't think he is out of the game. Diabetes and a heart condition can often be treated and controlled. I doubt we will ever see him on the front lines again with his rifle fighting the bad guys, but I think he could play a more important role in leading and building a citizens movement that might help in the fight against corruption and impunity.

I get a lot of complaints about not posting comments, but one reason Buggs only had one or two is that he was stricter than I am. He said he would rather have 10 good comments than a hundred that were trash or stupid.

  19. This is a very serious matter, more than a simple robbery. Something had to have occurred in the "resort" of Acapulco to piss someone off on a very high level. A serious message delivered perhaps? These policemen and policewomen have to know how seriously they are compromised. How many ride the bus back to Acapulco?

    "Qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum"

A maxim often paraphrased as "Si vis pacem, para bellum." The eminently reasonable philosophy that ,"If you would have peace, prepare for war." The English version is often back-rendered as "Si vis pacem, para bellum." This sentiment is attributed to Flavius Vegetius Renatus, who wrote in the "De re militari" (390 B.C.E.): "Qui desiderat pacem, bellum praeparat; nemo provocare ne offendere audet quem intelliget superiorem esse pugnaturem". (Whosoever desires peace prepares for war; no one provokes, nor dares to offend, those who they know know to be superior in battle.)

    2. Absolutely ridiculous. Officers are never "unarmed". They should obviously ALWAYS be armed. You never know when an emergency situation could arise and their services urgently needed. Man, what an embarrassment.

What good are federal officers without armament and protection?

What good are they if they are not ALWAYS prepared for any emergency situation?

Absolutely retarded and ridiculous and there is no excuse. Whoever is in charge should be canned immediately. In fact, that person of rank should just go to the headquarters/ barracks and turn his badge and gun in quietly when no one is around.

  26. Could have been a random robbery with teenage gunmen and tweakers around (could have been part of the 100 gunmen that robbed the journalists). Those gunmen are just so lucky those cops didn't have their guns or they surely would have been easy target practice with the joke turned around on them!
