Gente de la Tia Juana: Report from Culiacan, Sinaloa

Original article available at Gente de la Tia Juana
Translated by El Wachito
Original article was published in February 7th at 2PM

The war for local-drug trafficking has started in Sinaloa between Ivan and Alfredo Guzman against Damaso and his soon "Mini Lic" Lopez.

Firefight where 1 Marine was killed in Culiacan

Everything started in Navolato, Sinaloa, where after the arrest of "El Chapo" Guzman in Mazatlan, Damaso made an alliance with Cesar Carrillo, brother of the "Señor de los Cielos" and enemy of "Chapo" Guzman.

Ivan and Alfredo were not very happy with the alliance, however after several meetings, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada convince them that all types of "peace making deals" were good.

Even with the new alliance, smalls clashes were still ongoing. A few months later after the last capture of "El Chapo", he had already divided the local drug sale  Plaza in Mazatlan between his sons and his Compadre Damaso Lopez El Lic, then the sons of "El Chapo" made a truce with H-9 and H-2, of the Plaza of Nayarit, who are native of Mazatlan and who in the last months have been gaining ground with an alliance with Rene de la Cruz and Chonecas del aval.

Narcomanta left by H9 and H2 in a bridge of Mazatlan, "Soldiers of cardbox you will pay the 2 deads, soldier, minucipal cop and ministerial officer who ventures into my terrains. atte. Choneacas h9 h2 NICO"

According to Damaso, the truce between the sons of El Chapo and H-9 and H-2, consisted in "fucking him over", however the old wolf  Damaso hold his laugh. His Compadre Guzman was already detained, why he shouldn't attack the inexperience sons of his Compadre who were doing things wrong?

He was detained, yes, but in Mexico a lot of his friends and enemies wanted to kill "El Chapo's" sons, however Damaso didn't do anything to them because he was scared of his Compadre, who was powerful free or incarcerated in Mexico, but everything changed when he was extradited .

El "Chapo" Guzman does not represent anything anymore. The Mafia perceives him as a dead man in the United States and the moment that Damaso has been waiting has arrived and he exploded like a bomb.

In the "drug houses" of Culiacan, for example in Colonia Libertad, Wisaches, Toledo, and others... the armed clashes had already being ongoing for 4 days, with 3 strong firefights reported, and two Mexican marines have been killed in action. One strong firefight in Imala were 6 Mexican marines were killed, another firefight in Colonia Villas del Real were 4 Marines died and 5 civilians were executed, also 15 "levantados (kidnapped)", 4 of them were kidnapped after leaving the Serie del Caribe (baseball tournament un Culiacan).... 18 dead bodies have been found and a lot of disappearances.

a Convoy of Federal police in Imala 5 days ago

It is rumored that among the disappeared people, "El Javi" personnel of Damaso Lopez is included. This is just the beginning. We will share more information in the following days.

Time has proven that the type of narcos that gangbangers and fans of publicity loving thugs say they "have respect" have a career span of months and years at best. The Mexican government, USA Government and citizens of Mexico do not tolerate these terrorist over the long run.

    1. Nah, it's called a ambush. Even the best special force units in the world have lost men to an inferior adversary because of a decently planned ambush. The element of surprise is the key. The Zetas were good at it back in the day. CJNG has done the most damage to the military in the last few years with their ambushes.

    5. Hey South Dakota Kid - the material on Borderland Beat is mostly translations of media reports in Mexico. (and they do a damn good job of it, thanks BB!) They always include the original source so you should be able to quote that in any school paper or for that matter, media report.

Here's another website that has lots of background information on cartels, a respectable source that's often quoted in the mainstream media (which is NOT covering the recent violence in Sinaloa at all) http://www.insightcrime.org/news-briefs/conflict-sinaloa-cartel-spike-western-mexico-violence

The New Yorker is an impeccable source of information. You can read 10 articles a month free. http://www.newyorker.com/search?q=drug+cartels

The LA Times used to have pretty good Latin American coverage, but not so much anymore.

Reuters and the BBC sometimes have good coverage of the drug cartels, although it's generally pretty broad.

I'd encourage you to read the books of Charles Bowden (who is often mentioned on BB) perhaps the most known and respected writer about drugs/corruption/etc. in Mexico and especially on the US/Mexico border.

Vice also produces some good material on Mexico and the drug trade. Here's a recent article about Sinaloa
      https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/inside-mexicos-cartel-territory

      https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/a-brief-history-of-the-relationship-between-mexican-drug-cartels-and-the-catholic-church

These sources should be totally acceptable for your school paper. Good luck and vaya con dios

These people testify against their closest allies to help their own cause . A recent murder trial were there were three involved here in Texas showed where one testified against his father and uncle . That's pretty must standard in these things . My tip to you is , study it write about it but don't get in it . It will bring you way more grief that the rewards you are after .

What gets me though is that this Damasco character who was a government officer and aided chapos first escape to proceed as a fugitive for his actions and never be detained by government. As though impunity was awarded to freely excercise in criminal activities. How corrupt and low the government is.

  13. Guys I am not a conspiracy theorist but do you notice a pattern?

Extradition of leader to USA = Cartel Split a manner that forever fractures the organization.

This is CIA and DEA all over.

Any bets, the hit on Chapo kids was to keep them from cooperating or snitching to get a deal, leverage, or negotiation for their pops? Or pops, negotiating a deal where his sons are protected?

    Or

Maybe the US and Mexican governments let Damaso know that he is now their favorite..... And it would be his turn to shine.

But let me give you an example:

Osiel gets extradited CDG splits into a bunch of cells

Zetas are now like 3 different groups

Alfredo Beltran Leyva gets pinched BLO goes to war.....then Barbie splits.... Then the whole thing fractures.

In Michoacan it was the same thing with La Familia, CT, auto defenses Viagras and now a whole bunch of groups

Guerrero Free for all, hard to keep track and women and babies getting cutting up

The concept of "divide and conquer" is a very Caucasian Anglo Saxon one. Not trying to race bait or be a conspiracy..... Look at US foreign policy, MO is the same... Cause internal strife, cause split, both sides turn guns on each other and de-stabilize the region. Middle East just an example.......

The US has pretty muched milked and got all they can get out the Guzman Loera's perhaps they have a new rooster in this fight?

Changing subjects slightly I read that Mayo was with them when an attempted hit took place, if that is the case wouldn't it have been an attempted hit on Mayo as well???

So it would be Chapo's sons and the Zambada's vs. Damaso?

Or just Chapo's sons vs Damaso

Either way this is the beginning of the end for the Glory days of Sinaloa...... I hope it's not, not because I care about a drug cartel but because we already saw what happens when a place gets destabilized. Look at Guerrero, look at Michoacan, look at Tamualipas.

    4. The US does not profit from the drug war. We spend billions of dollars a year on this fight and we don't get a return on our investment by capturing a capo and taking his cars and houses.

The US has been pursuing the "Take down the kingpin" strategy since the days of Colombian cartels. It's long been known that cutting off the head of an organization results in the balkanization of the cartel into many micro trafficking groups. Whether that's a good thing or not is up for debate because it certainly increases the level of violence but it also weakens the cartels to the point where they will never pull off the kind of BS Escobar did in Colombia.

      Delete
    5. I hope that I am wrong, every time this happens with splits and fractures the whole region goes to hell, and the quality of life for the populace diminishes as well as safety, no one is safe, especially the innocent civilians that don't have dog in this fight.

    6. @1:00PM - are you serious? Get your head out of the sand. The US, corporations, private jails and prisons, government employment, technology companies, the largest government agencies and our top big to fail banks profit immensely from the drug war and have since the Roosevelts were smuggling opium into China. Wake up! Open your eyes! The drug war is 100% agenda driven and has been in the US since they learned how much power it afforded government from England.

History would beg to differ, who cut the head off of Ollie North??

Also as I type this the Mexican Marines just Killed el H2 in Nayarit. Mexican government takes out the H's and Damaso takes out Chapitos??

      Game of thrones?

Or was I notfar off earlier in saying that Damaso is now the USA's and Mexico's favorite Narco. He better enjoy it while it lasts because like all the ones before him, he too will have a "shelf life" before the DEA and Mexican authorities milk him for what they can, then he will get either the Arturo Beltran Treatment or the Extradite to US treatment. Depending on how well he plays ball... With his handlers in DC and Mexico City.

      Delete
    8. 11:14 - your exactly right about Damaso's shelf life. The successful and smart ones are the people you don't hear about and self publicizing themselves as bad asses. Now who do the Beltranes side with?

Plus all those independents from Sonora, Durango, and Colima?

What about the big crime families of Sinaloa who lay low, who do they side with?

The outcome of this old fued brewing in the past 2 years will bring alot of death to these regions.

Will CDG, Z (what ever is left of them) CDN, and the smaller groups side or support one side or the other? Causing more proxy wars in other states?

No groups have more money and power in Mexico than the Carrilo family and the 10-20 families that control Sinaloa Federation (to include Mayo). The "Beltranes" gang has always worked with Isidro, Guasave thugs and Mazatlecos since the split in 2008.

    1. 11:45pm- He was never the main guy. The main guy is and always will be Mayo Zambada. The problem here is nobody likes Ivan Guzman. Ivan has had problems with Chino Antrax, Damasos for a while. Recently Ivan was on his way with a convoy of people to Tacuichamona a ranch near El Salado and El Alamo (Mayo home turf) to kill Guti one of Mayos people because he had something against him and Mayo told him to turn the fuck around or he was going to take him out. This is stuff we never hear about but it happened. Also, Ivan is abusing his "power" by increasing rates on all drug transactions even if his product isn't involved in the deal. This especially angered Damaso and was basically the last straw hence the shootouts that have been happening lately. I highly doubt Ivan gets killed just because Mayo is going to step in amd make this war go away.
