El Chapo attended pretrial hearing in NY today

By Chivis for Borderland Beat

Still complaining about accommodations

“El Chapo” appeared in a Brooklyn, New York, federal courtroom today for a pretrial hearing.

U.S. Marshalls escorted the Sinaloa capo from high security Manhattan prison cell.

Because of security concerns, last week a judge ordered the hearing to be conducted via web cam, but Chapo requested an in court appearance, which was granted.

Chapo’s 27 year old wife, Emma Coronel, was present in the courtroom, who Chapo quickly spotted as he entered the courtroom, both broke into smiles.

Prosecutors contend that Chapo led the Sinaloa Cartel for 30 years and during that time ordered kidnappings and killing of thousands.

The Guzman complaint machine has not let up in any of Chapo’s prison transfers and his move to NY is no exception.  In a news conference after the hearing, his attorneys, along with his wife, complained about Chapo’s accommodations.

Pointing out that Chapo is kept locked in his cell for 23 hours a day, with only one hour of exercise time and visits by attorneys.  His wife says she has not been allowed to visit him.

El Chapo is being held in the 10th-floor Special Housing Unit, known by its acronym, the SHU, pronounced like "the shoe," prisoners spend 23 hours a day in 20-by-12-foot cells, prohibited from communicating with one another. Meals are eaten in cells.

In the conference, Chapo’s attorneys suggested that the extradition that moved Chapo to U.S. jurisdiction was flawed and possibly illegal.  This seems to have taken a page out of the El Mochomo defense, which in fact the extradition order is problematic.  Multiple charges were added after his extradition, which is unlawful and is a valid defense in the case of El Mochomo.  Chapo’s attorneys are claiming this may have happened in the case of El Chapo.

Chapo's next scheduled court appearance is in May, 2017.

Filed yesterday, request for order of protection regarding information in the case.  Document has an outline of charges and assertions by the U.S. SEE BACKGROUND on document below:

    4. Good to see u back Chivis. Honestly him being extradited to the u s is very good for him. In Mexico everything corrupt. Here The prosecution makes one mistake and this case will be thrown out. So this is not gonna be an open and shut case. Oh yea and one other thing. in federal court they don't use Jane doe they use your actual name if your testifying against somebody

    4. I have a lot of respect for even folks like Chapo who did what he had to do for the hand that life dealt him. The only thing that keeps circling round my head is when you're as in and as deep into Drug trafficking and crime as Chapo was how and why would you allow yourself to be taken alive? He knew very very well what was going to happen to him if he was caught! If it was I, there is no &^%^ing way I would go alive!! I'm sorry no way!! Just something doesn't make sense, but than again he could have been scared of death!! Which I'll add that how could someone who ordered the death of so many be afraid himself of dying..

    5. Those that make it to the top in any organization are those most motivated. In crime the prime motivator is fear. Hence those most afraid - of death - make it to the top. Hence I agree with you: their fear keeps them alive for worse sometimes.

Of course there are xceptions: Escobar, Botas Blancas etc.

    6. They never mix hight profils gangsters with population. All of them wait in the SHU until the trial is done. If they get a deal after a plea bargain sometime they end in the WITSEC prog, in this case, they do the time under a fake name in a unit dedicated to snitches.

    7. As for chapo being taken alive remember that he is under the assumption that his agreement with the power that be are watching he can rely on in the end so he feels there is no need to go out in a gun battle. Second he feels in his mind I have enough money to pay for the best possible outcome. Sometimes narcos have a false sense of reality. And last but most important he knows that the US government and death have an agreement with his cartel being him the boss and therefore as we talk about him doing life in super max just like El mayo son brought out the immunity he El chapo and his father has, this is only forced retirement for the leadership of the Sinaloa cartel in hopes that the wickedness of the US government and the part they play doesn't come to light. So while we all sit and assume El chapo is doomed, 10 years max no talking about Mexican politicians that helped. Sons going to have to retire and live off the money, wives will remain rich and protected and it's all over

    8. Chapo could be in PC the SHU is where most notorious people in PC are held SHU is a secured housing unit and they hold PC inmates in the SHU all the time.

just because someone needs PC don't mean they wont't be in danger or danger to the general population of PC so they are put in the SHU because the SHU is for people that for some reason or another can't be in general population or PC population.

    9. also with that paper lawyer filed to protect the evidence in case or discovery package makes me think Chapo might be snitching because his statements will be in the discovery package and why would the lawyers want to keep this private unless there was stuff in there that was bad for Chapo to have the world know.

Till he's been on good behavior instead of driving himself crazy he needs to get on his knees and reflect on every wrong he's done and ask the Lord up above for forgiveness.

  21. They should weld that mass murdering scumbag in a dog cage and keep him in it 24/7. Chapo's wife should be investigated and arrested also. She knew from day one of his activities and the mass murders ansd executions he committed. She should be charged as an accessory.

    1. You MUST not be a lawyer like most of us..If she DOESN'T know details she is NOT an accessory..Just because you know someone is a criminal doesn't make you a accessory to their crime..Everyone he knows would be charged if that were the case..Criminals are entitled to marry and a "smart" criminal knows not to talk business with their wife if they are not involved..What proof do you have she is?
