Narco youngsters; they leave their toys and pick up guns

Translated by Otis B Fly-Wheel for Borderland Beat from an El Debate article

Subject Matter: Narco children
Recommendation: No Prior subject matter knowledge required

Los Zetas and La Familia Michoacana were signalled as the cartels that employ the most under age youngsters. According to a report from the portal "24 Horas", every day, there are more minors that leave playing or studying, to participate in illegal acts under the orders of criminal organizations.

El Ponchis, child sicario, alleged to have committed multiple homicides

Reporter: Israel Beltran Baez
Authorities of the Marines (SEMAR), has identified the Los Zetas and La Familia Cartels as those the principally recruit minors into their ranks.

However, they are not the only criminal organizations that recruit children and adolescents, SEMAR has detained minors in criminal conflicts with the law in 12 States of the country, among them, they emphasize Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Veracruz, Zacatecas, Guerrero, Michoacan, Durango, Chiapas, Jalisco and Nayarit.

SEDENA informed "24 Horas", that the majority of minors detained by the Public Ministry of the Federation, were arrested in relation to crimes of possession of fire arms, drug dealing and possession, and being hawks "Halcones", lookouts, as well as hydro-carbon theft, extortion, possession of stolen vehicles and kidnapping.

Adolescent Women

During the last ten years, the armed forces have detained 4232 minors, among them 485 were women.

In the cases of the detained women, the majority are from the States of Veracruz, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas, while the adolescent men detained are predominately from Nuevo Leon, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Guerrero and Aguascalientes.

In a poll taken from the article on El Debate, 73% of those who voted, said they knew a minor involved in crime, in a separate poll in the same article, the majority agreed that education programs will be the most effective way of deterring young people from turning to crime.

  5. Education programs for young people failed them and themselves, how come some know nothings recommend more "education" to solve problems?
--I know on the US there are plenty of solutions to problems CREATED BY THOSE WITH THE 'SOLUTIONS' and many times they have even the budget ready, all they have to do is create the problems, from gangs to drug use to early pregnancies to school drop outs...
--In mexico the government officers just steal the budget, facket, union leaders help, facket, oooh the youngsters need some education, how about some foreign education company or corporativo to help remedy that mexican educaishun problem? It will only cost a few billions and billions of dollars, will even extend credits on our private universities, on line of course, one computer per student, will be more expensive than attending "harvard" in person and probably learn nothing but hey, it is "harvard"...
--el ponchis was in a beltran leyva operative cell no? In morelos?

  9. 7:20 and 7:22 I see where your coming from . There are so many that want to paint criminals as victims. We have to look at this realistic . I can understand sometimes there may be one forced to participate . Really now , it just wouldn't make sense to run a cartel on forced members . I don't think it could be done . We can say poverty , lack of opportunity and so on ect . The bottom line is where is their conscience ? Empathy for the person they victimize . If they didn't have that to start with what else could they become ? A sociopath is a sociopath . No amount of education can cure that . Freudians tend to say they are sick while people in general call them evil . Generally from Sigmund Freud to the common person all agree that there is no cure for these types

    1. 8;39-That is 1 of the best comments I have read on here.It makes so much sense. This kids must have an inkling of what they have to do[maybe not outside of Mexico but in Mexico yes]unless they are blindsided by the bling[cash, cars, girls, etc,]yes that too but I still think they know what is involved as a teen and they may even personally know people that have been victimized like neighbours but if they don't have a conscience yes they will join.Of course at that age you don't think too far ahead of perceived consequences with all those raging teen male hormones.

    2. 8:39 Forced members do exist. Not every 1 inside a cartel is there willingly. Training camps have people that have been kidnapped. Who do think cooks and cleans at these camps? The kidnapped are modern day slaves. You either pick up that weapon or you're stuck doing kitchen detail or police detail. Because the camps are mobile for the most part the staff is small. At least 1 person is sacrificed 2 get everyone 2 understand the consequences of disobeying. Money and big trucks are constantly being dangled in front of you 2 get you 2 join these groups. Again you either join or you're stuck doing some detail for them. Not everyone inside a cartel is there willingly. Thousands of innocent people have been kidnapped and forced 2 be there. Many eventually give in 2 their demands. But many have also died because of their refusal 2 do anything wrong. - El Sol Perdido

    3. The best comment you have read, canna, leaves out the institutional corruption of the mexican government, the corrupt judges that would administer the justice for these young devil criminals...
--If Elba Esther Gordillo, "la Chaky" can steal from the education budget, and gets released to her million dollar houses and her millions of dollars in the banks, on the US and in mexico, "because "she is too old" pobresita" and she still can make her daughter a federal senator, and her grandson a federal deputy congressman, and all the politicians get succor and support from the US government no matter what their corruption...
I think we need to address the causes of the corruption of minors at least at the same time as the youngsters' crimes.
Meanwhile on the US, I saw the start of drug trafficking in some junior highs, kids selling little bags with kool-aid powders, real cheap, I am sure they were laced, lightly, but laced with other powders, just to get the kids into it, they grew into drug trafficking gangbangers, sociopaths, and gun totting criminals, many of them are dead now...

    4. This is 7:22. I agree with you. I have often thought of these young individuals as victims with sorrow for them. However, you see it is not difficult for them to kill or harm another. There are people today who wouldn't harm anything at all. As far as poverty, that is a poor reason for them to use to do what they do. Environment, possibly. Education, definitely. The education they receive is what they hear on their news and see in the streets with their very own eyes. Educating them won't help. It is known Mexico has one of the worst education processes of many countries. First you need to find educated teachers before you can educate the youth. All you ever hear is excuses for why they behave as they do. Never do they own up to it. They are only smart enough in the end to say they didn't do it. If they used those smarts in the beginning, perhaps things could improve there. There will be many to dispute this but the fact remains many countries are not like Mexico because the civilians are smart enough to stop it before it starts.

    5. @4:39 I have yet to see any comment that addresses what I perceive to be the basic problem. A value system that parents instill in their children. Teaching right from wrong is included in that value system. It has to start in the home at an early age and it is a continuous process as that child develops.

It all starts in the home and what the children are taught there.

    7. That is the 'having a conscience ' part DD.It is taught the difference between right and wrong and I think it's a little harder to teach this in Mexico with all the almost normalized corruption and shenanigans that go on in Mexico.I also wonder that some of the youngsters may have been tramatized by PSD and never had it dealt with and that that could be a contributing cause for a 'no conscience' because they are numb to any feeling.Where's MexicoWatcher? We need his expertise.

    8. On the US, children get corrupted at a very early age in schools all over the country, public and private schools have problems, and they have so discovered that the parents are at fault for what their children learn at school or on the street in spite of all the money and programs...there is always the more money, less students, more magnet schools, more private schools paid with public funds...more snow jobs and BS...from specialists like Common Core...who are just trying to male hundreds of billions of dollars on their tens of billions of dollars they "invest in 'not for profit' benevolent foundations"...
      --What can mexico expect?
--well, mexican education system products come to the US and wrestle good jobs from some american college graduates, with no english speaking skills, no special schooling or education.
HOW COME? well, cheap slave labor is one key factor...

  15. I'll say this about criminals....i was once a kid, full of rage at the world and wanted to hurt everyone. eventually i acted on it and blasted some people, went away for a long time, and absorbed the prison ethos. then i got out, had a child, went to college and established a career working with highly educated, kind, and caring folks. Now, i give back to society something crazy, mentor kids on the same path i was, and despise everything bad i was. people can and do change for the better. now, i also recognize that what i did is the exception and not the rule, but i for one am happy that no one put in a bullet in my head when i was young, even though i probably deserved it, and i'm sure some of the people i help including kids at make a wish are also glad i wasn't put down. and the people calling these kids roaches and scum, are probably no better than the scum they claim to hate.

@12:15 i never did the things this kid ponchis did. that is true, but it could've been due to circumstance. i also never walked in that kid's shoes, and my understanding is that he was never loved. i do think he can be rehabilitated because i believe in God. But would i set him free on society if that decision was mine, probably not until he was to old to cause harm, or never. But wouldn't dehumanize him and act like I've walked in his shoes despite the evil shit he has done, and it was evil horrific shit. and maybe I'm being a hypocrite because i don't think i would be so understanding if it was my family member he killed.
