‘Fast & Furious’ rifle capable of taking down helicopter found in 'El Chapo' cache

A .50-caliber rifle found at Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman’s hideout in Mexico was funneled through the gun-smuggling investigation known as Fast and Furious, sources confirmed Tuesday to Fox News.

A .50-caliber is a massive rifle that can stop a car or, as it was intended, take down a helicopter.

After the raid on Jan. 8 in the city of Los Mochis that killed five of his men and wounded one Mexican marine, officials found a number of weapons inside the house where Guzman was staying, including the rifle, officials said.

When agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives checked serial numbers of the eight weapons found in his possession, they found one of the two .50-caliber weapons traced back to the ATF program, sources said.

Federal officials told Fox News they are not sure how many of the weapons seized from Guzman’s house actually originated in the U.S. and where they were purchased, but are investigating.

Out of the roughly 2,000 weapons sold through Fast and Furious, 34 were .50-caliber rifles that can take down a helicopter, according to officials.

Federal law enforcement sources told Fox News that ‘El Chapo’ would put his guardsmen on hilltops to be on guard for Mexican police helicopters that would fly through valleys conducting raids. The sole purpose of the guardsmen would be to shoot down those helicopters, sources said.

The Fast and Furious operation involved federal agents allowing criminals to buy guns with the intention of tracking them.

Instead, agents from the ATF lost track of 1,400 of the 2,000 guns involved in the sting operation.

The operation allowed criminals to buy guns in Phoenix-area shops with the intention of tracking them once they made their way into Mexico.

The operation became a major distraction for the Obama administration as Republicans in Congress conducted a series of inquiries into how the Justice Department allowed such an operation to happen.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt after he refused to divulge documents for a congressional investigation into the matter.

This is the third time a weapon from the Fast and Furious program has been found at a high-profile Mexican crime scene.

  1. Thanks for posting this, Tex. It came out earlier in the day on some "conservative" sites, so I'm glad a BB reporter had the guts to post it. Facts are facts and Fast and Furious was a complete idiotic disaster that resulted in the death of many innocent people.

    1. I think we are missing the point, which is how easy is for guns to be purchase in the legal market and then ending in the hands of criminals. don't tell me the guns from that operation are the only ones that were purchase legally. And the U S people need to know that we have to increase measures to avoid this. for example how did the terrorist of San Bernardino got a hold of the weapons used to killed innocents? with the help of a friend. There is a need to have Universal background checks, so people associated with criminals cannot get guns in the legal market. And make whoever purchase a gun legally not able to sell his or her gun without another universal background to the prospect buyer, or held the seller responsible if he or she does not follow the rules. Just a thought

    2. The thing that bothers me the most is that nobody will pay for what they did on this side of the border.

    3. Guns can be bought illegaly at gun shows across America. Sellers only care about making their profit. No 1 measure can prevent criminals from buying them.

    4. @1:45 If you actually had a fucking clue about what your talking about you'd know there already exists a background check and penalties for buying weapons for people other then yourself, it's called straw purchasing, and neither one of the laws have stopped criminals from getting the weapons they want, because their criminals. If people want to actually make a real difference in the violence that comes with drug trafficking they need to come together and get the drug laws abolished because pushing stupid Universal background checks, waiting periods, and any of the other dumbshit laws clowns try to get passed will do nothing. When I was a kid at age 13 I kept a 25 auto with me at all times and do you think for one minute I worried about some stupid background check, no I worried about someone else having something they'd get me with. Now that I've grown up and bettered my ways I use the wisdom I've been given from my past in understanding the whole gun control debate which really comes down to either you ban firearms completely, and try and confiscate all of them which would end up a bloody mess or we do the best we can with the laws we already have on the books and get rid of some of the worthless ones that are unconstitutional anyway.

    5. @ 8:37 - i am so glad you said what yo said because i was about to. when people say "we need universal background checks" goes to show everyone that they don't own guns or know anything about guns. because of precisely what you said, we already have background checks in place. snot to mention we have almost 2000 gun laws in place that are not enforced, just like immigration...if we would just enforce the laws on the books, instead of talking about making more laws. As much as i love my country (USA), the past 10-15 years have brought us to a low point, not to mention the emasculation of men in this country and everyone being offended about literally everything. it makes me sick.

Well I saw the combat video like 20 times I rewound the clip over and over again.
The one giving orders tells every one to look up while they ram the door. Why in fucks name would you order all the guys to look up at the ceiling in the middle of a breach?
Then once they clear the room chapo was in he tells one guy to check behind the mirrors. How does he know and why does it take so long (90minutes) to find out that the mirrors hid an escape tunnel?
Seems like the one that gives orders doesn't know how to operate or may be bribes.

Either way I saw the aftermath video and they say that they were being attacked by 50 cals .
Yes shrapnel from a 50 will end your life.

    4. It's a sniper rifle, not an anti aircraft gun.

      Delete
    5. 9:44 a .50 is an anti material rifle. A sniper is someone trained to shoot and hit a target at long range. He can use a. 223,.303,.308 etc. it doesn't matter. But when they use a .50 is usually for specific targets, usually tanks or armor vehicles.

And not its not all mexicans growing drugs and smuggling them its only the ones US arms

They swept it under the rug.

Would be nice to have an old fashioned Mexican stand off with the CIA. Winner takes plane full of coca.

Here is why the Cartel is wininng the war...
To be CIA/DEA you have to be able to deep throat uncle sams cock. You gotta polish his nut sack and suck it dry swallow and smile. It takes years of screening and years of experience to become DEA CIA . so when one fucker is killed its like they found out they have prostate cancer.

When one narco is killed the Cartel has to send flowers and a small amount of money to the family and replace him with Another narco.
That is why CIA DEA get so mad when they have an officer down. They are hard to replace.

Before you make another incompetent comment, why not educate yourself on this issue. To label this nightmare a "white" problem is ludicrous. Fast & Furious has always been an issue about the incompetent US agencies involved. From ATF,DEA to the very top...The Justice Department! The lies, cover ups and corruption continues to this day. Last I checked Eric Holder is an African-American. If you have to comment about a subject that involves the death of innocents,at least know WTF you are talking about. Peace to all innocents. 23. "Lost track of them"? The DOJ never intended to track them. If they had wanted to do that, no forced purchases from legal gun shops would have been necessary. For those of you who are so sure that all the cartel weapons come from the U.S., you should also be aware that almost no Mexicans were shot by U.S. citizens. Who pulls the trigger? Other Mexican citizens.
A corrupt Mexican government, working with a corrupt U.S. government brings about death by drugs in the north and death by gunfire in the south.
Criminals do crimes, violent people do violent things, they always have. You will never, ever stop violent criminals from getting guns, from China, America, Russia, Pakistan, Iran etc. coming through Honduras, Venezuela, Guat.

As for the expert who referred to Op Wide Receiver: none of those weapons were "lost". Op Tradewinds was the Fast and Furious directed to Honduras and the Carib. Nobody ever even talks about that.

The Mexican military and Police forces kill most of the Mexican citizens. The Mexican government has connections to the U.S. government, don't you think....Maybe that's what is lacking, somebody isn't thinking. They're so busy trying to blame law abiding U.S. citizens that they forget, the corrupt government and the criminals they set free (or never even arrest) are doing the killing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. No wide receiver weapons were lost, and the number of weapons was much, much smaller..
Jaime Zapeda was murdered because he knew what happened and why. The agent driving the car was from ATF. He was the only surviving witness. Jaime was supposedly killed with an AK, but the driver was only wounded slightly. The drivers story doesn't wash.
