Mexico ambush leaves 10 dead, including 5 federal police

 yahoo. News AFP

Guadalajara (Mexico) (AFP) - A gang ambushed a federal police convoy in western Mexico, sparking a shootout that killed five officers, three suspects and two bystanders, authorities said Friday

The attack took place late Thursday as the seven vehicles carrying paramilitary gendarmerie officers were on patrol in Ocotlan, Jalisco state, the federal police said in a statement. Eight other officers were wounded, including one in serious condition.

It was the deadliest shooting for Mexico's new gendarmerie, a 5,000-strong unit modeled after European military-like forces that President Enrique Pena Nieto launched last year to protect key economic sectors from organized crime.

"We have regrettably had minor losses of one officer in some other events," but never so many in one attack, a federal official told AFP.

- 30-minute gunfight -

A gendarmerie commander deployed in Jalisco said the officers were checking on reports of an attack on municipal police when they were ambushed.

The police statement said the officers were on patrol at around 9:15 pm when a vehicle approached the convoy and "without uttering a word, one of the individuals pulled out a large weapon and shot at the federal agents."

The officers shot back and more gunmen arrived in about 10 other vehicles, firing in all directions.

The gendarmerie commander said the shootout lasted 30 minutes and took place in several streets.

"As a result of this clash, we report the deaths of five gendarmerie division officers and three civilians whose bodies had cartridge belts and tactical equipment and who presumably are part of organized crime," the statement said.

The statement did not say what criminal organization the suspects belong to, but the region is home to the Jalisco New Generation drug cartel.

The suspects kept shooting as they fled the scene, leaving bullet holes in several vehicles parked in several neighboring streets.

Authorities found seven "large weapons" -- a term usually referring to assault rifles -- and four grenades. The suspects left behind five vehicles.

The federal attorney general's office will investigate the attack.

- Other ambushes -

More than 100,000 people have died or gone missing since Mexico's drug war began to escalate in 2006 with the deployment of troops to combat drug cartels.

Criminals have attacked authorities in Jalisco in recent years.

In October, a federal lawmaker was abducted on a highway as he drove to the airport near Guadalajara, Mexico's second biggest city. His charred body was found hours later in a neighboring state.

In May 2014, a group of 30 gunmen armed with grenades ambushed a military truck near the Jalisco town of Guachinango. Four soldiers were killed after the assailants tossed their grenades, sparking a shootout.

El Universal reported that 2 other civilians "who apparently  oblivious to the event and whose bodies were located in same direction of fire which was aimed at the Federal Police

Informador reported that nhabitants of the municipality even recorded a video from a rooftop, and immediately shared through video portal YouTube .

Several corporations are directed to the site; among these, the air group of DPP, because after the shooting the criminals fled the site and have not been located. A mobilization ambulances leaving from Guadalajara are added. So far no reports on what conditions are officers injured. -

I woukd love to go to ocotlan, it's been 6 yrs and my daughter's woukd love to meet all the little ones, my uncle has a bad as restaurant in the hills about 20 mins outside of ocotlan in his ranch, just love it. Anyways the point of this post is that everyone tells me how safe it is over there and to go, fuck that! I don't wanna be kidnapped and shit, not worth it. Fuken mexico has so much to offer, great food, amazing nature that rivals anything in the US but it's sooooo fucked up overthere! Stay away from Mexishit!!!

    2. That is the problem, media gets you, or you are screw up by media, simple put, Ocotlan have 365 days a year, and because 1 day happens to be a bad day does not mean ocotlan is bad for vacation...Even in cities like Mier, San Fernando, Cd. Victoria, Monterrey, Piedras Negras are very safe or safer than Mexico city or New york city, the problem is that people will never recognize numbers and there is another big problem, the problem of generalizations, because Cd, juarez Or Mexicali or Matamoros are gettin very dangerous then is good to not visit them, but nobody realize that their citizens still are conducting bussiness, they still sell tacos, they still go to school, go to church and go to restaurants, why? Because they know that media are talking to small numbers, that is, and one dead body in the street beheaded does not mean a city beheaded, but people reacts normally to fear, because fear is a natural to tool to survive since we were hunters and gatherers.

    3. Thinking like that will deprive you and your family if great vacations. I've yet to hear of anyone that I know that was harmed in any way in Mexico. My family travels out there several times a year with no isues.

I've has my share of shit here like being robbed and gun in my head but I NEVER fun worry about being picked up or not trusting the police. And yes Ive kiked it in longo, partied out there a few xs.

To the guy telling me I'm screwed up by media, duse my brother is an engineer, was working out of irvine, ca and would oversee production once a month in mexicali and would always tm me and the boys "hey come to mexicali, all kinds of bitches at the strip clubs and my company pays for the hotel and car rental" I woukd say fuck no, I have a family! Guess what? He got kidnapped for 2 days, lucky they only asked for 5 grand, he got out alive now has a different job. Also in 2007 me and my bro and a few friends went to puerto Vallarta and we almost got picked up put there, we got lucky for sure.

To the guy telling me I will deprive my family of great vacations you are completely right but I rather be safe, I'm the one that has to PROTECT my beautiful 6 yr old girls. A few months ago my insurance broker who is from mex and has good connections out there told me one of his clients was driving in mex with his fa.ily and was pulled over by a con oy of 6 trucks and they took his 12 yr old daughter! Fuck that!!! I ain't gonna risk that shit!!! I HATE the fact that I can't visit my family out there and take my wife and my girls so they can see where I grew up but their safety comes firts. Look, here in the states one day a crazy motherfucker can come into my girls kindergarten class and so some crazy shit bit something about mexico just tells me to stay the fuck away, come on you can't even trust the fuken police or govt!!! Stay out of Mexishit at all costs!!!

Oh and my cousin works for the presidencia in ocotlan and he tells me to stay away for now, in his words "la situacion esta bien caliente". His dad says the same shit "mejor ni vegan". I rather listen to them and my gut than to any of you!

    10. I understand you worrying about your family's safety and everything, but to call Mexico Mexishit, that is a No No if you wan't to be respected for your decision. You should never generalize, it is unfair to call all of Mexico that. It is not fair that just because of Mexico's worthless government and that 1 percent of bad apples who commit all these crimes, the other 99 percent of good, hardworking people get called Mexishits. Mexico is it's people, it's places and it's culture, not the government and that 1 percent of the population who make up the criminal element. Just a little advice, I would not let my kids out by themselves at any time of the day around Peck Rd, Durfee or Garvey. EMF, Bassett and P13 are going at it pretty bad and there is a high percentage of civilians getting caught up in the middle of a crossfire. Arriba Jalisco & California y Viva Mexico & USA. Saludos!!!

    12. At 3:53pm man I don't mean to disrespect Mexico, I do love that country, I have been to Jalisco, Michoacan, Mex City, Veracruz, Campeche, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Yucatan and a few more but these are all my favorites because of the natural beauty and ruins, Palenque and the cenotes and el canon del sumidero are just amazing sights. That's why I said above that Mexishit rivals the US in terms of beauty like it's national parks and I've been to most states in the US and it's beautiful. But I call it Mexishit not for its people but for what it represents right now. It's just nasty over there, it's my way of boycotting the fuken country! You have any idea how many xs I've been close to booking flights over there but then before I click I'm like hell nah! About EMF and Bassett Grand and Puente that's all pretty much dead, these cholos are ot what they were in the 90's. For 20 yrs I lived right in the back of Boys Club where EMF had their head quarters and they closed it down, the wild flowers are all in prison or in the Rialto area thank god. Now I wouldn't leave my girls wandering around ANYWHERE no matter how safe the city is (just do a search and you'll find tins of registered sex offenders around any area) but here in the states if I'm with my girls I don't have to worry about being a "levantado" and that's what scares the fuck out of me in Mexishit, dude it happend to my brother in Mexicali! Oh and by the way, fuck Flores, one on one any of them me la pelan! At my girls school I dog those faggot and they don't do shit, even one of the teachers was like be careful, I'm like fuck them coming to this school walking hard with their wife beaters showing their gang tattos, fuken losers! And you're right arriva Mexico BUT it's still Mexishit for right now until shit changes.

    13. Hey Chivis, yeah Long Beach is not what it used to be, it's much better now, the rappers glorified it as being all hard but it's not like that anymore. As you know, LBC is just a really loooooooooooong city geographically and yeah the Willow area near the 710 is kinda ghetto (trust me it is, my wife is a psychologist and actually heads out there and tells me stories and by the way she deals with girls that have been forced to sex slavery or been rapped crossing the border) but if you told me walk in ANY city in Mexico vs ANY street in LBC at 2AM I would chose LBC for sure! I might get my ass liked, robbed or whatever but I ain't gonna get shot or kidnapped and lose my fingers or something! I'm regards to LBC having its own vibe it does! The nightlife in Pine st is pretty nice and there's some good food there. Oh and I'm glad you see yourself as "bonita" and that you welcomed my comment, I remember when yiu drove everyone crazy when you showed a bit of your face! Lol it was like brains and looks, wow! ;)

    2. From personal experience I know how often the US Marines were ambushed in Vietnam. Going on patrol meant being subject to ambush. Being ambushed was not taken as a sign of a lack of training. The Marines could call in artillery support and airstrikes. To kill at least three of their assailants and capture many vehicles and weapons while being outgunned and outnumbered would not be considered a defeat to the Marines, nor should it be here. You have not idea how costly to the attackers was this ambush. It was repelled with what I would call heavy losses by the attackers. The federal forces comported themselves well.

      Delete
    3. @12:57 no disrespect to the troops who fought in Vietnam (I am proud of everyone who served in 'Nam) but this is different. The game is the same but the times have changed and the fighting is different. There should not have been an ambush if they were trained properly. These paramilitary forces many countries have are highly trained in military and policing tactics. They are the elite of the elite and are always supposed to have backups and cover on any mission. That means eyes in the sky and eyes on the ground. It did not happen here. The cost to the attackers was minimal compared to the damage inflicted on the federal troops and civilians. Almost everyone escaped capture except the 3 killed and the few arrested. 5 federal troops murdered and 8 seriously wounded, plus the civilians killed and injured kind of states the obvious that the ambush was indeed a success on the part of the criminals and a huge failure on the federal troops. Poor planning and unpreparedness on behalf of the gendarmes. Their training and expertise is supposed to be above all, the best. In this case it wasn't, they failed or were failed by higher ups.

I spent many summer and holiday vacations between Poncitlan, La Barca, Tototlan, Jamay, Arandas, Tequila, Tlaquepaque and of course Guadalajara. It truly saddens me that events like this tarnish such nice places which have historic significance, beautiful scenery, beautiful people and awesome food.

  26. The govt. knows the full power of cjng, they have shut down gdl twice and when they ambush the troops they are impressive with their ability to stack bodies. Maybe this is a warning from el mencho, saying don't come for me like the rest?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am confused as to how they were led into an ambush. This paramilitary gendarmery force is supposed to be above elite with more training then the marinas and very specialized since they are a military unit doing police work. Odd how they put themselves in that position so that must mean that they were actually indeed given 'inadequate' training by the federal government. EPN and the govt have always bragged that they are highly trained and specialized but it seems that is not true as can me seen by this massacre. They definitely were NOT prepared and their guards were down. So whoever trained these particular troopers needs to be investigated and the situation leading up to the ambush. This wasn't no last minute operation by the cartels, this was planned and as mentioned in several news reports, the criminals had dozens of vehicles in strategic spots. Also, why while on the patrol did they not have air support? The Colombian Carabiners always have backup helicopter support. Something failed here and maybe the local politicians or police tipped off the cartel as to the exact route of the patrol. There is something out of place on this 'planned' ambush.

    1. Funny you mention that scenario I was thinking of the same yesterday. The firefight lasted well over 30 minutes - where was backup or reinforcements? I agree too why was there no choppers? But the backup? Good question, there were hundreds of troops not far away and the local police....the police - where were they? Why did no one respond to help? Why did no one assist when this fight lasted over 30 minutes?

Thanks for the post I thought I was the only one thinking what you wrote.

    4. Yea, this was a calculated ambush from the start. From the news outlets the story just does not jive. They were sent to a trap, but by who?

    5. Interesting. Maybe the EPN regime wants to undermine their worthiness so it can be business as usual with some new players. Elicit more funds for the paramilitary (I mean more funds for their personal accounts) that's what it sounds like.

    6. This exact same job was done in michoacan, against policia judiciales, 11 got killed while the soldiers in their group could not help, radio communications were recorded saying don't shoot the greens! Shot at the blues, the green are with us!!!
--A great shame for the soldiers in the area, their own brothers at arms gave them hell for culeros y vendidos y faltos de huevos... but, el jefe "manda"...
--El jefe should be court martialed and drummed out of the base at least...
It is the law, all the way up to the commander in chief, can't run away, or volunteer for it just because you are the "president"

    7. This is the government letting their own get murdered to get the publicity back on hunting down cartel gangsters instead of the disappearance of the students and thousands of others. EPN is trading lives for political face saving. And the brothers in arms is only for who pays more, the legal pay system or the corrupt killers. They have no regard for the partners or friends lives its all about the almighty peso or US dollar. The corruption and conclusion is just as bad in the military and if you can't trust your point man who can you really trust any more? This was a deliberate setup and slaughter.

Has everyone noticed the capture and arrests are almost daily now? Its a ruse to get the attention away fro the social turmoil and EPN's current scandal, first the rail contracts now the big money scandal. EPN is bleeding the coffers of the government for his personal gains. The cartels are only his other security force, Mexico needs a strong civil uprising to overthrow Adolf Nieto, Latin America's Nazi.

    8. Nieto and his henchmen had comrades butchered while help stood down and refused to assist. Fucking government collusion at it's best!

    9. The regime just needs a diversion scheme and this is it. I don't hear of a search for suspects as the usual whodunit or who is responsible. Already forgotten by the regime, the loss of so many lives and no investigation. POS's starting with peewee Enrique himself.

    10. And the commanding officers keep collecting the paychecks of the dead, claiming they went AWOL, then they steal the insurance money and carry on with the widows...just like the narcs...

    11. any news on suspects? We know the boss was nieto but any suspects? or are they just gonna arrest the taco girl and say her family is part of the cartel and she was the boss who set this all up. LOL fuck you Nieto!

  31. I'm in Nuevo Mexico and these pinche gringos were hunting Big Horned West African Sheep introduced to West Texas, big money paid by other gringos for a guaranteed kill on a head. This happened on the Texas and NM Border, and this is the bigger question.
