Shootout in Piedras Negras, Coahuila Leaves 5 Presumed Zetas Dead

On Monday, January 19, a shootout occurred in southern Piedras Negras, Coahuila, between
presumed members of Los Zetas and forces of the Group of Specialized Arms and Tactics (in Spanish: Grupo de Armas y Tácticas Especiales, abbreviated as GATE).

It began at 6:20 PM on the López Portillo beltway (which doubles as Highway 2 to Nuevo Laredo), in the Luis Donaldo Colosio colonia, when members of the GATE, conducting a routine patrol, observed two suspicious vehicles (a maroon Ford Explorer with a Coahuila license plate and green Kia Spectra with a Texas license plate) and attempted to pull them over.

Instead of stopping, they turned off of the beltway and soon the shootout began on Diana Laura Riojas street.  A red alert was called and forces from Sedena, PGR, Piedras Municipal Police, Nava Municipal Police, Federal Police, and Marina arrived to reinforce the GATE patrol.

A member of the GATE was injured in the shootout and a 67 year old woman was caught in the
crossfire and received a bullet wound in her right arm.  As for the criminals, three were killed outside of the Ford Explorer, while another laid dead in the middle of Hofman street, which runs parallel to Diana Laura Riojas street.  The fifth individual attempted to flee and was found dead in a field located nearby in the vicinity of a mountain.

Officials confiscated the two vehicles, as well as two AK-47s, an AR-15, two pistols, and quantities of white powder, apparently cocaine, and a substance described as white in rock form, which I assume is crack cocaine.

Those killed in the shootout were later identified by family members as:
  • Humberto Bernardo Lira Aranda, 26 years old, with residence on José María Bocanegra street of the Presidentes Tres colonia.
  • José Guadalupe Meza Gaona, 25 years old, with residence on Bosque Guillén street of the La Constancia colonia.
  • José Roberto Becerril Salazar, 21 years old, with residence on Mar Mediterráneo street of the Villas del Carmen colonia.  His father claims that he was not a criminal and worked as an air conditioner repairman.
  • Julio César Monrreal Martínez, 22 years old, with residence on Manuel Pérez Treviño street of the Presidentes Cuatro colonia.
  • Julio Valle, 33 years old, with residence in the city of Sabinas, Coahuila.

    6. 1:40 it is sad to see people like you who simply accept what you read about this conflict, despite everything we should know about how it actually works. Some people were shot and died - who were they? who killed them? Who said they were Zetas? Who put drugs and guns on them? Maybe the story is true, more likely it has some true parts and a lot of lies. Certainly, your simplistic account of "good guys" vs. "scum shit trash" is not only cliched but out of touch. You assume the killers are not narcos themselves, whatever their uniform, when in fact they must be. Maybe they are the Zetas?

    7. It appears the Gates, Semar, Serena, PF is really making it difficult for the Zetas to carry put operations in Coahuila. From 50 truck convoys with 200 hitmen - to 2 vehicle convoy with 5 hitmen. Is this a sign that the Zetas are going to be
reduced to a street gang and no longer a mass murdering menace? If it hasn't happened yet it sure seems the Gates are sending the A's in that direction.

  5. Damn !! A 67 yr old woman caught in the crossfire ? Bastards. In the place of the original "Nacho" so much horror takes place. Whats z 'difference of Jihad john and Mexican narco terrorist Juan ? No difference than he might become your next door neighbor or sell tacos in your barrio.

    1. So, comparing Islamist terrorist with Mexican narco crime again...The real narcoterrorists aren't selling you tacos, no te preocupes niño. Todo es seguro. The narcoterrorists are running your banks, opening your businesses and developments, and collecting your votes - sending weapons and monies to the streets to spread terrror, while remaining safely insulated from the conseqences.

  6. I personally would like to know why comment was not posted. I think it's terrible that any law enforcement just summarily kills suspected Cartel or any other criminal for that matter. I thought that this site let everyones comments be posted.

My comment that the cowards coming on here wishing criminal groups summarily executed would change their tune if these cartels started using cash for technology that would enable them to track users of these social networking sites.

Something to think about when wishing death on anyone without the fair judicial process.

I understand the uphill battle for the Mexican people with all the governmental corruption.

In my opinion this does not grant leave to those who would want to wish death on any living human being, no matter what you THINK they may be involved in. The operative word is THINK, rather than actually knowing after the judicial process.

    2. Yep . Drug traffic is so much a part of the fabric that its hard to tell . My dad was in the 2nd world war he ask a fellow soldier from some Appalachian state about the bootleggers moonshiners . He replied there were so many that they had to wear badges to keep from selling to one another.
I would bet you would be hard pressed to find a honest Mexican cop

Does anyone notice that types like good old Joe here always seem to have a superior attitude towards everyone? They believe they are right about their opinion concerning"fair judicial process"never mind that this idiot seems to overlook(or chooses)to overlook reality as long as he can show he is a mature intelligent human being with a well defined morality. Also notice he whined about his comment, because his comment"deserved"to be included...Joe,have you noticed we are talking about Mexico?Your bullshit about fair judicial process and law is very good, but you seem to be talking out of your arse with idealistic abandon.Hey Joe,where you going with that shit in your brain..

  8. The crimes of the zetas and the other cartels that PAID for the same plazas to the politicians in charge, as was the case in san luis potosi with carlos slim helu protege manelich castilla craviotto, who was working with los zetas and sold the plaza to cds too...
--the crimes of the cartels helped pena nieto and el pri come back, because they were ran by the governors friendly to pena nieto and el pri, for whatever reasons, they are also being run by the military and federal and state police who fabricate narcs and terroristas just to show work, they also plant weapons on their kills, and have been doing it for a long time, until they were caught red handed in Tlatlaya and other places, the news is, nobody believes the army or the different police bodies...

  9. Good always triumph over evil, even if evil gets temporary pleasure. Ask all the cartel leaders how much fun it is to be running scared, looking over your shoulder every day. Live a simple honest life, and don't envy the scum, they will get what's coming to them in this life or the next.

  10. How come these sicarios are always in street clothes, when in every execution video they are decked out in full tactical gear? At least you would think they'd be wearing bullet proof vests, and helmets. Is it just dress up time when videos are made, or is it something else? I don't believe the Mexican Army has made all or even most of them, but is it possible they have made a few? It would serve them multiple ways. I know some videos have been accounted for, mostly the tit for tat Gulf, and Zeta videos. But not that many.

    1. There is not much gear they have to share it and guess who wears it most of the time the top guys not these peons

      Delete
    2. Maybe because they are just sicarios , the one's with the helmets and bulletproof vest are probably estacas/escoltas who are willing to go all out. Just my opinion

      Delete
    3. @ 9:04 They were probably just a local cell under the orders of some plaza boss, maybe in charge of selling narcotics locally, those normally get the leftovers from the 'big dogs' might be the reason why they were not that well equiped with a 'tactical gear' besides some of them only wear the tactical gear when they are in turf wars agains't rivals when they are in 'atacking mode' fighting over territories.

      Delete
    4. Because these guys who are dead are the ones they send to do the dirty work , an the tactical gear guys are usually the better trained sicarios that are protected by federales an army to clean the plaza
