Signing off

Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat

Thank you for the many good thoughts, comments, emails, they are appreciated more than you will ever know!

I will be lurking and helping with moderating.  And what happens in the future, that's for us both to discover.

I love 99% of you all, even the Millies and Willies.

The Chapo Snitch Guy, you became classic, I think that must have surprised the hell out you as well, I immensely  enjoyed the comments of  contrite,  written to the Chapo Snitched Guy.

The 1%, well...ain't going miss you at all, and you know who you are.

My favorite personal Borderland Beat success story

I received an email from a person whose 18 year old family member had vanished crossing into the US.  They had called GEO along the border and every agency they could think of.

Then they emailed me.  It was a long shot.  But border sources I am rich with.  I called Border Patrol contacts, who gave me a GEO contact, and within a couple of hours I found the kid who I will call Julian.

BUT he was being released in a couple hours.  That meant being  bused to the international bridge and told to march into Mexico.  In this case, the city of Acuña Coahuila.

Coahuila is the territory of Los Zetas, who would be waiting on the Mexico side for that bus and forcibly "recruiting" the young strong people.  Julian was in danger.

I called on my friend Lacy who lives in Mexico with her husband.  Also sent my assistant to Acuña with one of the backpacks we give to migrants at the Casa Migrante shelters.  New clothing, a little cash, phone card, toiletries  etc.  She took a couple bottles of water and a sack lunch of sandwiches etc for his bus trip.  We bought a bus ticket back to the interior Mexican state he calls home,  all this in case Lacy would spot Julian.  I contacted the priest at the Migrant shelter asking if Julian could stay safely there until his bus left.  He said "absolutely!".

Everything set.  Lacy had less than an hour to get to the bridge with a photo of Julian. (he is in the photo above left  taken at the shelter with his new backpack and ticket)  Incredibly, she and her husband Emiliano see Julian.  My blonde American buddy hurriedly approached Julian, he looking scared out of his mind, and she tells him she is there to help him and to go with her.  Looking back on the situation, if he had time to think, I doubt he would have climbed into the back seat of her car.

But he did. :)

And off they went to the shelter.  Julian had nothing.  They kept all of his belongings including his cell phone (a story I should have written about) But Lacy called his family and he was within a couple of minutes, speaking to his cousin in Oklahoma.  His father also lives in Oklahoma.  His maternal grandparents raised Julian on a farm in Mexico.

My assistant arrived at the shelter picked up Julian, and gave him his ticket, some money and the backpack.  It was then time for the bus station.  He was placed on the bus.  I received an email when he was safely home.  It was a long journey.  He said he never intends to try going to the states again and again experience that nightmare.

It turned out perfectly.  Amazingly well.  Everything depended on precision team work.  and lots of luck.

Mad appreciation and love to my sidekick Lacy and Emiliano .....also to all of you followers.

and the beat goes on......

Your friend,

Chivis

  2. And the beat you march to is unlike any I have ever known. But it is time you took some time for yourself and unwind after years of long days and sleepless nights working on your next story and worrying about BB.
i know you will be lurking in the background and be there when we need you, but it will not be the same. We will try to carry on, but we can never keep up with your beat.
    We'll miss you.

  6. Thanks for everything Chivis. You have been an inspiration to us. As I said, you poured your heart and soul into this site and it just grew from there.

This site is the best site in the world to many of us and it's thanks to you Chivis. I read bb everytime I get a chance. The risk that you guys take and the reporting that you do is phenomenal.

Thanks for everything Chivis. I firmly believe that you leave this place in good hands.

Don't get me wrong, we'll miss you. Please pop up every once in a while and let us know how you are doing. Good luck and GOD speed.

    1. I really like the comment about Chivis pouring her heart and soul, and her making us want to follow her phenomenal reporting! I agree , that it's people like Chivis who come along and make a difference in this world. BB is a great website and I believe she had a lot to do with it. We the readers could really feel the pain that it took for her to write so many stories, and I could sense she did it almost to the point of as an obligation to those who would have no voice otherwise! Chivis, we appreciate you! If it's time to, I understand, I don't know how you were able to do so much without getting sick from your health! Alot of the information that you put out there was gutwrenching! I did all I could , not to watch the most gruesome pics and videos! I didn't want to get desensitized to the horrible things happening in Mexico! Yet you were always there to be on top of it. From answering questions to clearing up coverups by Televisa! It must be hard for you to leave, but you have gone above and beyond! I also want to thank the other reporters that also have dedicated their time and efforts. Hopefully they can continue doing great things and we readers keep supporting them!

I tried joining the board once and you politely messaged me and told me that the IP address I was using aligned with someone who had been a source of trouble in the past, so joining the message board was a no-go. That most definitely wasn't me... I never could quite figure that one out. I would like to wish you all the best, and thank you for making a difference. Que Dios te acompañe siempre.

Im finally learning spanish but have far to go .. But this site is something i turn to daily.. I actually see/know the dangers of this country and words cannot express how much you guys mean to a english speaking person. You open the closed americans eyes with this site.. All the while risking your culo .. And have buttwipes like the 1% who just dont get how real it is down here.. Ill miss your stories but im sure the beat will keep going on... 7. My original corrido to the Chapo Snitched Guy:

      This corrido is dedicated
to the crazy Chapo Snitched guy,
who said Guzman would be a rat,
we all rolled our eyes, I really don't know why,

He said it in every single topic
      here at borderland beat,
even if the story was about the zetas,
or if it was about massacre on any given Mexican street,

We all would tell him to shut up,
his same old comment was getting lame,
then one day chivis said Chapo Snitched,
we look foolish, we have ourselves to blame,

      So this little corrido,
goes to my hero the Chapo snitched guy,
I'll pray to you for forgiveness,
up till the day I die!

  79. My dear Chivis,
You will be sorely missed by all, and especially by me. Your work has been so important. Please be safe. I know that God will hold you to his bosom. I am 70 yrs old and remember a Mexico that was exciting and friendly. The campesinos were and I believe still are among the finest people on Earth. You have helped to bring attention to their ongoing plight. I repost many of your articles on my facebook page. I want all my friends to know the truth about Mexico. You have raised the level of awareness of the horror that faces Mexicans on a daily basis. Thank you for your efforts. You will be sorely missed.
    Love,
    Tom

  80. Thank you Tom for your kind words of appreciation. I also remember the Mexico of my childhood fondly, I never heard any words of anticipatory danger from my parents and uncles/aunts, I only remember them speaking of PRI as the enemy and seeing huge PRI signs everywhere and wondering what exactly PRI was and why were they so bad to the people. But never about the "bad guys" of organized crime, that evil had not yet included innocents as fair game.

  82. Chivis, you have only had me hooked for a short period of time, ever since Harry Devert went missing and I found your site. I grew up with Harry and just found the way you handled the story from start till even after so profound. You helped a lot of people get the information with compassion and poise. Ever since, I have been an avid reader of all things BB, with a bias towards your stories. Thank you very much and best of luck to you in your future endeavors.

  83. Thank you so much! If I am entirely honest, one of the reasons I decided to call it a day in Mexico, was Harry's murder and getting to know Ann. She is incredible and her story would be a best seller and educational for others traveling in foreign countries and searching for missing love ones in same...
