Rurales Commander who said "We were Better Off with Autodefensas", Ambushed and Killed

By Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat-with info provided by Pepe

A Rurales commander who gave an interview to the press saying Michoacán was better off with autodefensas, has been killed.

Yesterday the commander of Coalcomán Rural Township, Felipe Ávila Díaz died. He had been shot last Friday morning and then transferred to Civil Hospital of Morelia. He succumbed to internal injuries caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

On 17 October, the police arrived at a sawmill located one kilometer Coalcomán, where he was taken after being abducted by armed men in a van.  He was discovered where kidnappers discarded, what they must have thought was a dead body,  near the sawmill.

Although he was shot repeatedly, only one wound, that in the abdominal area, proved to be the fatal injury.

Díaz Ávila candidly spoke out against the Fuerza Rurales on September 27th ;

“We were more effective and better as autodefensas, than Fuerza Rurales.”

Díaz,once a leader in the autodefensas movement of Michoacán, became the Coalcomán commander of the federally created, Fuerza Rural, hoping that working with the government would create a stronger security for the state.

The commander said they are now constrained of any movement or operation that as autodefensas, they previously implemented in the Sierras.  Now, he said,  they have to notify the government and await approval to move, more often than not the requests go unanswered.  He said the conditions they are left to work in are deplorable.

As autodefensas, their operations were very successful because they knew the treacherous mountain landscape, and their reconnaissance were of a surprise with few being aware of the pending operation.

“When we were autodefensas operatives, we were implementing the element of surprise”

Diaz, went on to say that the government quickly abandon them.  The same complaint heard throughout Michoacán with respect to the government backed Rurales program.

Like others who have spoken of lack of support, Díaz said, the government only appeared to take photo ops, depicting the issuing of weapons and uniforms and vehicles, then vanished.  He said they were given only 2 vehicles, few weapons, no funds, no gas, and were never trained by SSP as Alfredo Castillo touted would be done.

He reported that both the vehicles the government had provided to the city had been taken by organized crime.

Some rurales have openly returned to the autodefensas movement, which never was completely disbanded.  In fact, the coastal AD, once led by Dr. Mireles, has never disbanded and have been openly operating all along.

Reasonable people can only conclude that the installation of the Fuerza Rural, was in fact an operation with an objective not to secure Michoacán, but rather to disrupt the autodefensa movement.

Michoacán social media users are expressing their anger, which is being directed at one person, EPN appointed Commissioner Alfredo Castillo, writing phrases such as “Biggest criminal of Michoacán, AFREDO CASTILLO”, “ and “No. 1 enemies  to Michoacán Alfredo Castillo and Enrique Peña Nieto”, leaving no doubt who some hold responsible for the murder and heighten violence

  1. A commenter on a previous story about the problems in Guerrero said maybe the solution was for the federal government to put a "Viceroy" in Guerrero as he did in Michoacan. The only reason that I can think of why that would be a good idea is that if enough fiascoes like Castillo in Michoacan happen, it might be enough to bring down the EPN administration.

  2. how could the people expect a different outcome? Nothing any administration ever did was for the good of the Michoacán people. The people of Michoacán were better off without their help, at least then the ad could do their thing.

  3. It was ''hit'' ordered by El Abuelo out of Tepalcatepec, he didn't want to let it out of control like it did in Apatzingan.

  4. Does anyone doubt that Castillo ordered the killing of this poor guy? He was exposing a rotten truth. The FR is pure PR. Designed to make it look like Castillo is doing something to help Michoacán, while he creates his own H3/Viagras cartel. Keeps the money flowing up to corrupt politicos. Tuta is part of this new cartel He will never be brought down. Especially if FR needs permission from Castillo to go to the bathroom!

  6. dd I think you are right about your statement, but we have to think about how many people need to die for the change to come. We Mexicans need to make the change. We need to start Now. If people die in the process at least they die in the process of changing the situation and not waiting for the change to take effect

  7. Because of his death I'm sure Castillo will do everything in his power to bring to justice the perpetrators. Or he'll probably say, that's what he gets for publicly speaking the truth?

  8. Abuelo is a pig. ...I once told Doc "beware of the man with the sweet name, abuelo, I don't trust him"

Remember his ex wife said on the recordings of the telephone call. she claimed Abuelo had a hit out on Doc

It could have been him, but it could have been castillo and smurf also .

I had a conversation with my staff on Thursday about Mexico. They insist nothing can be done. I said "with the mindset Mexicans have, you are correct, for example none of you have even read one article about the nromalistas...it is the problem of others, right? Do you know the difference between the people of the united states and Mexico? The difference of societies? In the US if we have a foe, that threatens our security, or liberty, we as a people are willing to die for the good of the country, in order to defeat that foe. Mexicans are not willing to die for anything other than maybe what impacts them personally. So the malevolent 2% holds hostage the 98%. and nothing will ever change until Mexicans have a change of heart and mind."

Felipe Villalobos Bonilla(D.E.A fugitive) from C.J.N.G took/over the mine in Aguililla Michoacán after C.T was ousted, his sister is married to ex-Familia Michoacana mayor of Tepalcatepec Uriel Farias Valencia whose brother is Meth-Kingpin El Abuelo Farias Valencia. Coalcoman and Aguililla are neighboring ''counties'' and Felipe Avila Diaz was kicking-up too much dust and murdered El Abuelos Farias protégé El Cuate.

  11. 6:10 funny? where in the world would that statement fit in? I was comparing citizenry.

You are being disappointingly silly, for sure there are bad people everywhere, but I was of course speaking of a society, its history, its willingness to make sacrifices for the good of people. If you want to pick and choose and twist my heartfelt statement, then lets talk specifics, like my family being raised to feel obligation to "help", Or the fact that my immigrant grandparents 24 grandchildren serve society as Judges, DA, Medical doctor, nurses, fire captain, a whole bunch of teachers, and a humanitarian. or that all four of her sons were the original band of brothers fighting in Europe simultaneously, one becoming a POW.

Don't bother me with such ridiculous statements

  13. Thank you Chivis for your truthfulness and honesty on tough issues. Clearly, you want what is best for the Mexican people and are not holding up the U.S. in any way as the perfect answer. Thank you for speaking the unvarnished truth in so many instances. The pernicious forms of 'conflict avoidance' can only serve to advantage the predators. Those that advocate and live the 'hurtle the dead and trample the weak' ethos. I believe Tuta may have this credo tattooed on his chest. Thank you.

  17. @Chivis at 6:01 p.m. 100% correct. I've lived in Mexico for 8 years. Mexicans have no concern or consideration for anyone not a friend or relative. It's really a clan-based society - not good for the formation of civic responsibility. I also think the common Mexican reaction to corruption is not so much anger as "boy, I wish I could have the power to do that." It's envy more than anger.

  18. Chivis, when in Mexico we have a 92% unsolved murder cases , corruption up into the highests government echelons, rampant poverty, rampant abuse of human and civil rights and a Constitution that gets violated with impunity, just to mention a few problems in Mexican society, and these abuses go on for centuries, is not easy to change Peoples attitudes and apathy. The change is in the air and its coming we need to brace for whats going to develop. The revolution is spreading like a wild fire unpredictable and in several areas, but is going to burn.

  20. " objective not to secure Michoacán, but rather to disrupt the autodefensa movement "

That is the fundamental basis of Castillo and EPNs idea.
And it worked did it not? With the help of basic treachery on the part of the little goblin, and the car saelsman etc?Same reason Dr Mireles is still incarcerated, his people are still waiting on him and the gov are not taking any chances, still trying to let the man wither. It will be amazing if his resolve is still strong and he is not thoroughly disgusted at his treatment.

    1. Maybe the Government thinks it dodged a bullet this time , but they are just setting themselves up for the next one and the next one will come!!! The next AD movement, will be a tougher fight because the people will not be tricked! Dr Morels is still alive for a reason and the history book needs to have a lot more pages left because there is still a lot of chapters to be written in this Michigan Saga!!!

This is one of the problems of Mexico, the need to always compare?Of course she was speaking generally and non-patronizing,just stating fact, this is one the stumbling blocks in which you cannot even speak on it in an adult conversation. This subject is Mexico, many seem to forget that.

  24. The idea of democracy was to elect the people's representants, and send them to the capital, when needed, on official business, not to have all of them jumping from one political appointment to another by presidential finger, depending only on how good our elected representants sell their cnstituents' arses down the river...
--Presidential appointees suck big time, alfredo "el castillo de cagada" is proof of it, he only excells at fucking up...
--What is el indignado de palacio enrique el penaprieto going to say to the news about his friend?
--felipe avila diaz, whatevr his connections, his record, crimes, etc etc etc, died for badmouthing the devil and his helpers, and for bothering el abuelo apparently...
--That is the fate awaiting any mexican who has not been shock and awed into silence by the narcos, the sicarios, the military, the polizetas, federales, estatales or municipales, and the weaponry and immunity supplied to them by the US government, in the name of the US taxpayers...
--independently of any partisan ideas, the police all over the US has been psyched on to the public as a bunch lawbreakers who are serious security risks and need no breaks...
--The police all over the US have been given military weapons to use as they see fit, any victim of them, is guilty for having gotten on the way, and i'm affraid a few of them even conspire to organize riots to practice their special weapons and tacticz capabilities...
--No reasoning, no coddling the rabble, not until a few have tasted the tear gas and hopefully a few deaths and they have some riots going on...

Don't take offense to all these people sucking up to Chivis. Chivis doesn't want to offend the US of A.

I'll tell it like it is. USA has it easy. Mexico has it hard. Mexico's a type of place where you have to be very careful what you talk about, even to your loved ones. Mexico is dangerous. A lot of innocent people die in Mexico. And those brave enough to fight back are undoubtedly hunted down and killed. Martyrs,

Very few examples of heroism can be found in USA. They have the freedom of speech. They can talk back to eachother in a truthful manner. Mexico's a whole different game! I met a Mexican, who was on holiday in my country. He was a lawyer. I asked him his views on Chapo. He didn't answer me, and pretended he didn't hear it.

That alone showed me the absolute control that evil men have over Mexicans. For anyone to be brave enough to fight back is unimaginable to most US citizens. People faced with certain death, facing the barrels of guns.

A majority of the true heroes can only be found in the Americas. Almost 0 in USA itself. All the heroes are in Mexico and South!

Who cares what USA says, Chivis. The truth is USA are the puppet masters of the drug trade. Tyrants! Iran-Contra proves that!

  32. I disagree with your comment at 6:01 Chivis, a lot of mexicans have died trying to stand up for whats right, most recently the blogger of kidnap victims....people in the usa stand up for whats right because they are pretty sure they are not going to die. foreign wars are a different things....the US military is a way out of poverty for many poor people and i'm guessing most don't sign up expecting to die for freedom. they chance it, but don't expect death same as the mexican military fighting cartels....the ones that do expect to die for the cause, probably equal the same amount of mexicans willing to die for their freedom....the problem isn't the people as much as it is the levels of government corruption...as bad as it is in Mexico, I'm always surprised at the amount of people in Mexico willing to show their faces in protest of corruption and collusion with cartels. I love the USA, but don't believe average Americans to be any more valiant or caring than average Mexicans. Our government for all its corruption, is still the best one around and that's the big difference. Don't be blaming the victims.
