Narco War Billboards Mysteriously Appear in El Paso

Borderland Beat
El Paso Police are investigating the vandalism of two billboards overnight that included messages and hanging mannequins.

An El Paso Police spokesman said they do not have any information to suggest this was done to target a particular person or business at this time.

One message was painted on a billboard in far East El Paso at in the 9400 block of Gateway East, off I-10 East, and read “plato o plomo."

In Mexico, that type of message was directed at people in power such as police or government officials. It is interpreted to mean either take the bribe being offered (plata) or take the bullet (plomo).

Viewers that called into the ABC El Paso newsroom found the mannequin hanging from a noose from the billboard dressed in a suit to be more disturbing than the message.

Mike Mons, regional manager for Lamar Outdoor Advertising which owns the far East billboard, says the "plata o plomo" billboard is “vandalism” and El Paso Police are investigating it as a “crime scene.”

“It’s not an advertisement. As of 3:30 yesterday, it (the billboard) was blank,” Mons said by phone from Albuquerque.

The second billboard was in the 5200 block of Gateway East, off I-10, and had "dying for drugs" painted on it with a mannequin hanging from the billboard in a noose.
A rumor circulated that the "plato o plomo" message was advertising for the second season of FX's "The Bridge." An FX publicist told ABC-7 that the show is not connected to the message

However,  New Era Films, reported to KXAN El Paso, that  is in the planning stages of making a film titled “Plata O Plomo.” The CEO for the company told El Paso media that no one from their business orchestrated the displays. But they did say a marketing campaign with similar artwork had been planned.

The movie is supposed to be a fictional tale of drug cartel violence, and is set along the El Paso-Juãrez border.

El Paso police aren’t laughing though and say those behind the display could face, at a minimum, charges of criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

    1. What do you mean? From my vantage point it seems obvious that Mexico's problems are now ours. Yes many in the U.S. unfortunely use drugs, but it also seems that Mexican drug cartels are not capable of running a business without pure savagery. This is a problem with Mexico, not the U.S.. I am tired of Mexicans blaming the drug users here in the U.S. for the violence perpetuated by Mexicans. When the Italian mob ran drugs from the 50's until the mid 80's, they knew how to conduct business without killing women and children for sport. Clean your own house before you tell us ours is dirty.

    2. I don't see Dr.Mireless blaming the U.S. for anything. He is a nationalist that cares for his people, in that regard, blaming others for internal issues is simply immature.

    6. Agreed, and if Spain hadn't of conquered much of South America and decimated the indigenous peoples, none of you would be speaking Spanish. That's just my opinion though.

  24. It's probably some PR campaign for the up coming movie. Stupid and effective publicity. Oscar Wilde once said: "The only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about".

The cartels are not dumb, they try to be unintrusive as possible. They don't want to bring law enforcement attention to their business. It's stupid and bad for their business to have mass murder, street battles, multiple kidnappings and narco banners in the USA.

    Peace,

    ESB

  29. Its just like homepiece said, guerilla marketing, life imitates art, art imitates life. It is just some young graf dudes getting up as they say, or someone involved with the movie that has homies that do graf. You can tell because the lettering looks like someone with a bit of practice could do, if it was just a regular person with no experience, all the letters would be all fucked up looking, plus serious graf guys know how to do large pieces and not get caught... street art...

    ReplyDelete
  32. i am affraid nicki barnes got his deliveries via CIA/Air America, and "his" people dealt it gram by gram to the customers, who had to have had food stamps money to burn, but many of them were closeted users, making very good money as professionals, artists, great scientists and rich family scions, enticed to drug addiction by their many friends looking to privatize some rich man's money through their fake friendships, not all the money made from drug trafficking comes from poor black, mexican or white addicts, or two dolla's crack ho's.
--and yes,@12:29 being anonymous liberates some flow of ideas, there are still those geniuses that can catch you, like edward snowden, the wikileaks guys or the army whistle-blowers now paying for their sins in prison.
only when you spy under the cover of a private enterprise you can expect some impunity, and only those that own those private companies can spy to their heart's content, and move the internet, regulations and content out of the US, to where they can do as they please, and get US taxpayers money to do it...through blackmailing the US government in charge ...

  35. Wake up an realize what is going on in the City of El Paso! There are so many illegal crimes that are committed already that you people don't know about & yet our US government does nothing about it. This was not a hoax that deals w the movie, but a sign to let people know that things are yet to come look up what is going on in other cities and read about it when it comes to the Cartels.
Something has to be done to stop all this nonsense doesn't matter if it is going on in Mexico or the US we are all affected by it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You people realize these cartels are run by the us government they have run secret drug operations before and as long as they make money and at the same time get funding for "the war on drugs" they will continue to do so
