News of Chapo Arrest

Borderland Beat

Update: The alleged picture of the capture of El Chapo below.

News have started circulating about the arrest of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman. I started to received some Tweets early in the morning, but it seems like most major media nertworks are now starting to report the alleged arrest of the Sinaloa cartel top capo.

Resort Miramar in Mazatlan.

The capo of the Mexican drug Sinaloa cartel Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman was alleged to have been arrested in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, in the resort called "Miramar," Mexican authorities apparently confirmed to the newspaper El Universal.

Few details were available. But Guzman has long been considered the top prize and most elusive figure in an extensive, ongoing drug war that has left tens of thousands of Mexicans dead.

Guzman led the Sinaloa cartel, the most powerful, richest and oldest of the drug-trafficking networks in Mexico. The group is responsible for the shipment of tons of cocaine and marijuana to the U.S.

Possible picture of El Chapo after his arrest, thanks to Chivis for the collaboration and find.

This alleged apprehension happened overnight at a hotel in Mazatlan by Mexican authorities and in cooperation from the United States as reported by Associated Press on Saturday, who after reporting the news is now making it's rounds around news outlets.

Guzman was arrested in a hotel in Mazatlan and was immediately transported to Mexico City where they will verify his identity through fingerprints, DNA and teeth. If found to be el capo,  Mexican authorities will then have the task of attempting to sort out El Chapo's legal status and decide on the request from U.S. government for his extradition to be judicated in that country, according to U.S. government officials statements provided to another US media source.

A senior U.S. official said Guzman was apprehended alive in Mazatlan a seaside resort on the Pacific coast. No shots were fired in the capture, a source said, which was based on information from an informant.

The official, who was not authorized to speak about the arrest, gave information on the condition of anonymity.

Mexican authorities confirmed to the newspaper El Universal that a person was arrested in Sinaloa that could be El Chapo and they are in the process of verifying his identity.

In recent days, the Mexican marines have been raiding numerous properties in Sinaloa belonging to close associates of Guzman.

Guzman was arrested in Guatemala in 1993 but escaped from prison in 2001 and has been on the lam ever since.

Stay tune for more information on the matter, I am certain BB will follow up on this event and report on any additional information as it becomes available.

  33. The facial constructs belonging to the man in the arrest pic and the ID photo of Guzman are different. Guzman's nose is shorter, more narrow at the base and bridge. Brow, forehead and the orbital bones around the eye are quite distinct, too. It's "early days," we'll have to wait for the government's media spin. Who ever this guy is, i sure would not want to be him.

Now it is in the hands of national legislators to legalize Marijuana. Keep up the good work.

  45. Incredible ain't the word for it!

They really need to get this guy out of the country. I doubt Mexico has the facility, the integrity, or the incentive to hold this man securely- let alone bring him to justice. He knows where all the bones are buried and he knows who buried them.
There must be political and administrative types (think international banking) all over the world taking early retirement right now just to get out of the potential backwash of this event.

In my mind his crimes are of the type that should be administered by the International Court of Justice.

Fanciful thinking of course as the DEA and Justice Department must be peeing all over themselves right now for the chance to "debrief" the son-of-a-bitch.

It's hard to feel sympathy for anyone who was ever affiliated with this guy, but my concern is for the well-being of the children and innocent family members.

The hardened elements of the Zambada faction and other players will be looking for creative ways to keep Chapo quiet. It may very well come at the expense of his family.

  52. Down goes Chapo! Down goes Chapo!!! As a wanted fugitive, his time was up. He managed to evade arrest for 13yrs. after escaping from a Mexico fed. prison while at the same time expanding his narco empire to unprecedented heights. The question arises -- who will assume the leadership of his position within CDS which almost certainly will include his family members? Damaso? El Cholo? Ivan? Jesus Alfredo? I'am sure we will find out in dramatic fashion with the appearance of severed heads and mantras littered all over Sinaloa. Mayo and Azul remain as elusive as ever. Keeping a low profile is the key to longevity in the drug trade.

  76. IMHO This is bad! This capture (if confirmed) will only further destabilize the entire region. Other criminals have been biting at the chance to take over as top dog and will fight and kill to become the next leader like “Chapo”.

For those living in the region we all know “Chapo” was a decent man when it came to the Mexican people. To his enemies he was ruthless, but to the people he was good.

Today under EPN there is more organized crime and oppression with the police and government officials openly participating as criminal operatives in open rackets with total impunity than I have ever seen before (well maybe not for long)

Word on the street here today is shock and disbelief over “Chapo’s capture. Also there is deep anger over the fact US officials and American Law enforcement (DEA) were involved and working on Mexican soil. The American authorities have operated in Mexico for some time but it’s just finally crossed a line that has angered too many nationals with this particular arrest. I have heard people openly proclaim they want to kill US officials / federal agents operating inside Mexico simply because the USA feel it’s their place to police inside Mexico. If “Chapo” is extradited to the USA expect revenge killings inside the USA in several major cities. (It’s not me making such threats or claims, just what I’ve heard) As we all know Chapo had huge networks inside the USA.

I predict from what I have seen firsthand in the past 6 months that things here inside of Mexico will get a lot worse really quickly. Of course we all know the US government likes to destabilize regions so they can play puppet master, but this time I think they have underestimated the calm before the storm.

Please say a prayer for everyone and the entire situation!

    Sincerely,

    Very Concerned

chapo's billions will remain safely in the banks, per internal regulations, as always, other cartels, more powerful will keep on with the profitable business, who cares if the budget of the US government gets reduced?
the cia got back its business, the mexican cartels will go back to burros grameros, and all the money without middlemen, will enhance the revenue of the true owners of the business, a nice exchange for the US military bases in colombia to complete the deal; the mexican cartels should not have messed with the colombian druglords' bread and butter without greasing and kissing the proper ass...

  96. Chicago made him the 1st Public Enemy Number One since Capone I understand. This may well have something to do with why he got captured with the USA's help.

  100. I saw it coming. PRI captured him, PAN let him loose and coudn't find him during two terms. PRI returns and finds him in one year. Chapo was obviously affiliated to PAN.

  101. Half of you seem to think that El Chapo and his cartel killed people and what not. WRONG! El Chapo and his cartel were DRUG DEALERS, they dealt with drugs. People that kill others for no reason are called SICARIOS! Know your terms people...also, do your research, theres been alot of cases in which El Chapo has given to the needy and helped people more then the own government! I'm not defending him, I'm simply stating he's probably a better person than Peñanieto along with Calderon and half of the Mexican government...just because one drug lord was caught doesn't mean it's the end of the drug war around the world! Theres more drug lords yet to come and more events to take place, so don't get too excited.

  103. @4:06 do you know for a fact that Chapo did not kill or caused any collateral damage on others? that is how he climbed in the rankings of the cartel by being a ruthless cold blooded killer!!! also a sicario is always someone that gets paid to kill other(s) when ordered not just for no reason. oh! and drug dealer and sicario go hand in hand there is very little difference. the only thing I can agree with you is that he's no worse than EPN and CACAlderon ...g'day

  110. Just because hes arrested wont change anything. "Business" will just go on as usual. If anything, the arrest of El Chapo will cause a spike in violence as other cartels try to fill in the #1 spot. At least innocent victems have some justice served!

  111. Dámaso Lopez aka el mini licenciado is said to be chapo's predecessor
