Autodefensas Leader Dr Mireles in Plane Crash

Chivis Martinez for Borderland Beat
PGR will be in charge of the plane accident investigation

Video: Dr. Mireles arrival at the hospital

The first reports were not as critical sounding  as those that followed, and this is a breaking story that is evolving but here is what has been reported.
As follows from La Voz Michoacán:
The leader of the self-defense group in Michoacán, José Manuel Mireles Valverde, was in a plane accident in the vicinity of La Huacana after a forced landing of the plane he was traveling in.   This accident allegedly resulted in minor injuries that do not put at risk, said the leader of the group of armed civilians in Buenavista Tomatlán.
Other details:
The accident, near La Huacana, was at first thought the result of an attack.

The group was on the way to Parácuaro when the accident occurred where people took up arms just hours ago this on one of the FB libertad  Michoacán pages, this was posted 5 hours ago and is the reason Dr. Mireles was travelling there.  Parácuaro  is close to Apatzingán and is a stronghold of Caballeros Templarios:
"As of today in the town of Parácuaro we began to live free!
Parácuaro free!
Parácuaro with freedom!"
After the citizens takeover of Parácuaro (see photo above), gunmen blocked the Cuatro Caminos-Apatzingán highway in Michoacán.
Traffic was interrupted, so that hundreds of vehicles have been stranded.
This road connects the town of Parácuaro.
Dr Mireles was transferred to Morelia and is in critical condition

One person is dead, all others injured including the leader of Tepalcatepec, José Santiago (foto below).   (facts will change, the story is so fluid I am searching and posting what I can find from reliable sources)

He was travelling with four other people all male with the exception of one female.

Later updates say the plane was not shot down or attacked

Mireles became under a personal attack from all levels of the government.  He has been accused of acting illegally, and being an ex con.  Dr. Mireles is firm in his protection under the constitution to bear arms and self-govern.  Several articles of the constitution unequivocally support his declaration.  Article 10 and article 2 are strong points for bearing arms and self-governing.  Autodefensa groups have long been established in Mexico, and have produced impressive statistics of massive drops in crime.  80-90%.

The medical profession has always rejected the allegations against Dr Mireles and says the movement emerged by citizenship suffering from  insecurity and extortion organized crime and the state's inability or refusal to I challenge cartels.

Michoacán state government spokesman, Julio Hernández accused, without presenting evidence, that Mireles had been in jail from 1988 to 1992 on charges of planting and harvesting of marijuana, the doctor rejects accusations flatly.  There has never been any evidence that this is true in any measure.
Update: upon his arrival at the hospital he was assessed as having a traumatic brain injury and either a broken or dislocated jaw he was transferred via Federal Police  Blackhawk Helicopter
Announcement from PGJE of Michoacán: Aircraft left Guadalajara 17:34 hours towards Tepalcatepec
Strong Police Deployment Mexican Army elite guard and surround the hospital

PGR (federal not state) will be in charge of the plane accident investigation

A report sent in by "Choco" from Quadratin (computer translated)
José Manuel Mireles , the icon of self-defense groups operating in Michoacán since February 24 , was seriously injured as a result of an alleged plane crash occurred the night of Saturday in the town of La Huacana . Government reports state that around 20:30 pm an aircraft tried to make a landing on a makeshift dirt track of that municipality of Tierra Caliente region , and then supposedly collapsed. Result of the incident allegedly killed one person and the other four or five people on board,  were seriously injured . The information available; at 22:30  the leader of the Self-Defense Council Michoacán suffered head trauma , so admitted to a hospital in Huacana and was the version that was later taken by helicopter to Morelia .

Hipólito José Manuel Mireles and Mora are the precursors of self-defense groups that emerged in Michoacan to fight the Knights Templar , the first led Tepalcatepec making , the other that of Buenavista Tomatlán , neighboring municipalities of Tierra Caliente . According to information released by the social networking Self Defense Council , José Manuel Mireles suffered injuries to internal organs besides his health picture is complicated because he  has diabetes . The alleged air mishap came hours after self-defense forces stormed the town of Parácuaro to fill the county seat and put checkpoints at the entrances of the town, was in this city where he allegedly took off the aircraft that collided in Huacana , according to the same reports that spread in social networks by followers of the physician.

  1. This is a huge setback for the autodefensa movement. It is hard to believe that a mysterious hand is not at work in this event ... Plane accidents have often been used by intelligence services to get rid of key people. We say prayers for Dr Mireles.

  2. I agree... maybe not shot down, but the plane was probably tampered with in some way.

  5. Thank you, but the report said Jose Santiago...could be both.
I am grateful Hipo Mora was not with them...

But I wished they would not have reported he was transferred to Morelia to a hospital there. Or maybe that is a ruse. I hope.

  6. With brain injuries, things may not look bad at the beginning... I just heard a doctor speak about this on TV a few days ago. Things can seem normal, but then swelling can set in and if not relieved quickly the person can die.

Remember the wife of a movie star (can't remember his name) who had a ski accident and died suddenly later?

The doctor I heard speak said that he takes brain or head trauma very seriously, cus things can go wrong, eg swelling, a day or even 3 days later.

So they may have thought he was okay... reports are he was conscious at the clinic in Huacana... and then problems may have started later.

the loss of a great leader is a great loss but to lose the fighting spirit he instilled in the movement would be a tragedy. fight on humble mexicans fight on.

  11. Talking about himself and other leaders Mireles said when they were on the way to the struggle of Tancítaro and Pareo:

.” remember that if we fall, the movement is not over..."

But he looks good, I am more confidant of a good outcome. I do not like the government new report of internal injuries, I hope that was in error.

going to leave the computer I have a annoying headache.

  16. God, I hope this guy doesn't die man.

I'm so sick, so damn tired and frustrated with the fact that so many setbacks continue to happen that slow down the progress of the Mexican people. This guy started a movement that has the potential to recreate a revolution in modern Mexico.

Though I call myself agnostic and have found it hard to do so before, I will pray tonight for the health of Dr Mireles.

    VIVA MEXICO

  21. Dr. Mireles is a great man of principle and respect. He is the type of person who would be the perfect president for Mexico and the troubles it faces currently. It will never happen, but one can wish. He walks what he talks. I pray he fully recovers but am also very realistic in the fact that even if Dr. Mireles makes a full recovery, he is very likely to meet an untimely death in this struggle. Dr. Mireles knows this as well as anyone, the movement for peace and dignity takes priority over all else including ones life.
Big shout out to Chivis! So much respect for you and all the people at BB.

  23. Chivis, I just drove by Star Medica here in Morelia, and there's no security presence there at all.

So, it's either like the hospital scene in "Godfather I", or they've taken Dr. Mireles to a safer location.

On Sunday down here there's a huge tianguis (ready-made narco-bloqueo) only a few blocks from the hospital where he was taken, and it's twice as big today for Dia de los Reyes.

  24. Yeah, it's me again down here in Morelia. Apparently I just missed his movement to D.F.:

  26. Hey Morelia (me again) thank you for keeping us updated.
can you give us a sense of how the citizens feel of the events surrounding the plane accident?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hey, Chivis, Morelia here.

I talked to a few people at the tiangius (el audi), and I talked with a paramedic friend who worked for Protección Civil for the state for about 10 years.

Everyone doubts that the crash was just a "mechanical failure." And who can blame them?

    From Fredo Arias-King this year:

"Although they were insufficiently persistent and ultimately unsuccessful, Fox and Calderón did from time to time shyly place PAN allies atop the unreformed police and law-enforcement structure—namely Ramón Martín Huerta (the interim governor who replaced Fox in his home state of Guanajuato), Juan Camilo Mouriño (touted as Calderón’s successor), and Francisco Blake Mora. All three, however, were killed in separate plane and helicopter crashes while serving in their respective posts."

  31. Hey Morelia...
Though not impossible, and I appreciate that many of us tend to want to blame CT...sabotage would be an almost impossible feat. The trip was unplanned, and Mireles tells almost no one ahead of time his planes to mobilize. I doubt the pilot even knew who the passengers were to be.

You know those planes, tiny naca-mobiles with wings. Hopping over short distances, privately owned, landing on any dirt patch.

the very fact he used one tells me he had little choice in order to get to Parácuaro in a hurry, and after dark. If I was forced to fly in one it sure as hell would not be after dark.

As for his death being the death of the movement, absolutely not. Hipolito is a very strong leader, in many ways more so than Manuel. But he is not as charismatic as Mireles so has not done many interviews.

the other leaders are strong as well. some more than others. But one person does not make a movement, or it is doomed from the beginning. These are smart people. They have planned for every eventuality
