Autodefensa: Narco-Corrido Singer El Komander Blocked by Cherán Community Police

Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat

Though autodefensas groups have organized and been successful in keeping organized crime out of their communities for over a century,  the autodefensas of Cherán, Michoacán, was the first group in recent history to organize and drive out organized crime from their community.

A "narco-corrido" concert by "El Komander" had been promoted in Cherán, Michoacán from 3pm on December 15th, 2013. The Sinaloa based El Komander is known for singing about organized crime and in particular about the Sinaloa (CDS)  Cartel.

Even though the cartel  isn´t active in the Purépecha plateau, where the community of Cherán is located, community members clarify that they are absolutely against any type of organized crime organization and the activities that revolve them, including narco-corridos of any type.

On April 15th, 2011 Cherán, rose up against the local cartel that was taking control of their lives through murders, rapes, extortion, kidnapping, disappearances, and the illegal exploitation of forests in the region.

The contention of members of the Purépecha community declared that local, state and even federal authorities were complicit with organized crime in the region and were no longer conducting their duty to protect and provide security to their communities, and that authorities had become a part of the problem  as they were no longer working in the interest of the community.

In the 20,000 member community, the situation resulted in the indigenous community becoming ungovernable and in a move to exercise their constitutional rights, they banished all forms of government agencies, state, local and federal from their community, and took control in a self-governing, self-policing manner.

In affect they took control of the community and all of its governing functions, including all primary decisions.  By implementing a rotating general council, its form of self-governing since the uprising has returned to the traditional form of indigenous self-council has been reinstated.
These actions have eradicated crime from the community, in the hands of a rotating council.  Living with the awareness that organized crime will try methods to reestablish themselves in the community, the concert of narro corrido band “El Komander” was not allowed to perform or enter the community.

Despite ticket sales by event organizers, the autodefensas council informed event organizers they were prohibited from entering the community and conducting the concert.

The concert was viewed by community leaders as an attempt to test the community’s resolve against these types of concerts.
A few miles ahead of the proposed concert venue, a community barricade was established as a check point, and would-be concert attendees were turned away and the concert was prevented from going forth.

Note: The video and information on the original articles named CDG as the cartel that this singer sings about, however that is in error, the Sinaloa based singer is a corridor singer of CDS material.  I changed the information to reflect the correction but there remains the conflict in the video.

  1. El Komander sings about the Sinaloa Cartel and associates

  2. El Komander doesn't sing about the Gulf cartel. He rides CDS way too much and has corridos about the LFM but mostly overdues it with CDS corridos. This guy sucks, everytime I hear his corridos I cringe. Movimiento Alterado at it's finest. Glad they kept his ass out.

Pesado, Intocable, Los Invasores, Duelo - they play all the time just north across the border in southern GTO.

When Intocable will play in Valle de Santiago in GTO, but not Morelia. Something's messed up.

It is the people of mexico who have to suffer the onslaught the violence, extortion of these asshole cartels. It's easy to understand why you think that callin someone "dr. Mireles jr." Is an insult... But then again, you probably pretend and imagine that you live the same life as those lame ass narcos which are portrayed in those narco corridos. Get your own life and stop using shortcuts like "ur" instead of "your".

  12. The Self Defense Group did the right thing. An important part of the struggle against the cartels is on the cultural front. Music, clothing, slang and narco lies.

The Narco corridas have been promoted by The Los Tiges del Norte, Los Tucanes for about 25 years. They sing about the Narco lifestyle or the killings of enemies. Glamorizing the lifestyle and killings. Some kids really believe the narco corridas. Music is a recruiting tool for the cartels.

Its time we demand, the radio stations in Mexico and the States to ban this ugly, sick music.

    1. The groups you mentioned are actually some of the more calmer groups,if you listen closely to those singers, they might mention a gun or two or a ton or two of coke, but they don't talk about chopping heads or dissolving people.I think one of the greatest corrido composer of all time is Chalino Sanchez. He tells stories of people he new personally or through a third party..just my opinion.

Mexican sicarios have to kidnap for ransom and extort people to make ends meet after not being paid by their narco-bosses.it is normal to suspect that those making the most out of it,must be the owners of the circus...like the "king of Spain"now a billionaire, after he had no money for chewing gum...now he comes to America to ask Hugo chavez"why don't you go home? In his own house, but he won't stay to listen to Daniel ortega's accusations of his corruption and his pretending to recolonize latinamerica for the good wellbeing of his pockets, after the economy of Spain has fucked up and its financial institutions have lost billions of dollars and euros, and the Spanish great financiers don't know what the hell happened. 16. I dont think (narco)corridos have anything to do with promoting the "narco lifestyle". I personally like narcocorridos but that doesnt mean I glorify narcos or that I want to be involved in any of that. I have been hearing them ever since I was little, and while some corridos do glorify certain narcos, others warn the listener that being part of that is not a game....then again everyone has their own opinion/perspective about corridos, I just wanted to share mine

  17. ESB...
Honestly that's never going to happen in the entire country. Sure some parts of the country will but not the whole country.
It's like saying rap being banned in the us. Which we all know will never happen. Also not all corridos are full of it, they are just exaggerated.

    1. This surge of federal troops has the makings of a counter revolution of sorts being that the region is near collapse in terms of cartel control and the government's need to assert authority over the people. The company and ad have a good point: where are the arrests of the leaders being that they know where the cartels heads are? Too close for comfort. Also, did you catch the article on business news where the cia and cds are linked: cds gives info on rivals and cia lets cds drugs flow into country?. I think El universe did the original story.

  25. "The Narco corridas have been promoted by The Los Tiges del Norte.....They sing about the Narco lifestyle ......Some kids really believe......recruiting tool for the cartels."

A true statement which strikes at the heart of the issue.

It's really the youngsters who always seem to be impacted most by events. And, as usual, we have no one other then ourselves and our own greed to blame. I could round out my thoughts more evenly on this subject if I knew how many advance-sale tickets had been sold to this event. Though I suspect the kids are probably more interested in the "beat" then the message. Clueless teenagers.

We who are blessed to be living in North America need to take a more guarded approach to the way our own culture is evolving. It wouldn't take many levels or social evolution for all this to be taking place in our own neatly manicured front lawns.

As always, thanks for the platform, Chivis.

  33. To all the people that commented about my post, thanks. I did learn some new things about corridos, Maybe, instead of banning the groups, we should stop playing the "Narco Lifestyle is wonderful" songs on the radio and at fiestas.
Los Tigres and Tucanes have been linked to to the AFO of Tijuana and Sinoloa cartels. Playing at private cartel parties, and praising them. OK,so we can't ban them and others. Then lets buy from artists that don't promote this narco BS. Food for thought...
