'Narco Cultura' is a documentary that explores the influence of Mexico's drugs war on the country's pop culture.

The enduring drugs-related violence has given birth to a specific music style called narcocorridos, often compared to America's ganster rap movement.

Israeli documentary filmmaker and photo-journalist Shaul Schwarz, who lives in the United States, has been covering conflicts all over the world. Mexico's drugs tragedy struck a chord with him.

"One day I woke up in Tijuana, I was covering murder scenes. I drove up to Riverside and saw Edgar (Quintero) for the first time. He was performing with a gun and people were parading around and singing these lyrics, and I was like 'Oh my God'. I understood that that was something that should be touched and we should think about how we got here, that was the point of the movie," said Shwarz.

Edgar Quintero, the film's main protagonist, is the lead singer in one of Los Angeles' most successful narcocorridos bands.

"The movie is a very strong documentary. It's about the reality of two worlds. The reality of music and the reality of violence. Shaul (Schwarz) succeeded in portraying that connection in a very powerful way," said Quintero.

The film follows two main characters: Quintero and Richi Soto, a crime scene investigator, who talks about what it is like to work in Ciudad Juárez, one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

"I've grown up as a photo-journalist who has covered a lot of conflict and war, and I thought this was very interesting, and yes, there were dangers because we really did want to take it to the front line. Not with talking heads, not with experts, but really live that feeling," explained Schwarz.

Quintero rejects accusations that what he does glorifies drugs-related violence: "We're not glorifying it, we are simply describing the kind of society we live in."

  2. Bullshit... they are definitely glorifying it. The main thing that struck me the most about the trailers is how Mexicanos in the US LOVE this shit... while they countrymen and women are enduring the extreme violence day in and day out... and their US counterparts are laughing, celebrating and cheering it on. Very bizarro. There was a forum post about this with a different trailer I think.

  10. Here is a link to the official trailer, which compliments the video in the post.

it allows the voices of the people to be heard not a voice over, and it translates in subtitles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaJ_hru9Qk4

  15. I think people need to ease up on throwing youth under the bus for "glorifying" Narco life. Because at the end of the day they're not glorifying the drugs or the guns, they're glorifying the thought of being powerful and successful. In Russia the kids glorify the Red Mafia, In the US they glorify the local street gangs and back in the day it was the Gotti's and Capone. If they were smuggling chickens into the US kids would be wearing golden rooster chains listen to music with chickens clucking instead of gunfire. I know its a ridiculous comparison but I'm just trying to make a point. You can't demonize El Komander or Gerardo Ortiz and listen to Lil Wayne or Biggie.

    1. Music? No music,no voice, just the most horrible bleatings of the worst kind.
The Brazos rapeando, was good, after them, psycho realm went nowhere,I used to play the razos just to make the youths mad, it worked,it was good,it is a kind of terrorism that now the fans of Larry hernandez, Gerardo Ortiz, all the animales de la sierra, who squeal like pigs, and the pas espinosa love to inflict on us.
I,as a victim of these people can tell you,it is plain terrorism of the worst kind...

  16. @3:20 the girls don't date narco's because they're narcos, in most states narcos aren't driving around in convoys with combat gear with logos like in Mich. they are attracted to them because their swag is almost always top notch, and they have money. Same as here in the US, girls like money and style and especially in a new relationship they can care less where you get it.

  17. @8:01am How do you know El Chapo is losing? (and no I am not a cheer leader, only a realist) Just because things have quieted down does not mean any one side has lost. All it takes is one phone call between the right people to start an alliance. Nobody is too big to fail I think El Senor de Los Cielos taught us that, but when your that large of an organization you cant really lose. It all comes down to the wholesalers, and Sinaloa is the Walmart of the industry. Who would you rather sell to 300 ma and pa's or one walmart? that's why I think Chapos people will stay ontop for the foreseeable future, its a sheer numbers game in my opinion

  18. @10:10 PM. I agree with you. This narco music is all bullshit. The innocent lives lost in Mexico and these dumb idiots are glorifying them.

  19. I dont think its glorifying it its just what they and there families see growing up in mexico these guys do alot of shows in mexico they could be killed there just for singing somthing wrong or saying something wrong and yet there still alive because they are just speaking the truth. .

  22. Those are the same wannabe jr's that won't even set a foot in Mexico... they feel that because they know someone who knows someone from over there they are narcs too. These new lame acelerado corridos are pure garbage and most singers compose them now because this new crowd is all drunk, coked up and like the fast beats. ask anyone of them where they are from and 90 percent of the time they will say Culiacan but have never even set a foot there.

  23. This movie tells the truth about music and cartel. many singers that in the corrido business retire or get killed by the cartel because of their music because they say stuff that the cartel don't agree with or that the cartel think they are a threat so they get rid of them. Like people say corridos is cartels gangster music and it is true because any wrong verse could have peoples heads or body parts in someones front steps. From my opinion i think cartel is bigger than gangsters because not even the Mexican police or army can stop them because if they try they will suffer with their own life or their families.
