Best Wishes and Shoutout to Chivis

When I started Borderland Beat, I knew I could not do it by myself and I was constantly recruiting for help to research information on the Mexican drug cartels. Not many people were willing to step up to the plate, but a few did and I am greatly appreciative for all who have helped in the past and do so in the present. Contributors who on their own time and without any compensation, provided information to many.

In the last few years or so, one contributor has gone above and beyond to make what BB is today, a reputable leading source of Mexican cartel news. This contributor is Buela Chivis who despite her failing health, continues to inform and contribute without a complaint. We owe her so much and always wish her the best of health.

Here is what DD shared on the Borderland Beat Forum:

"CHIVIS NEEDS OUR HELP AGAIN

In April of last year Chivis underwent a major surgery. Fortunately for all of us and all the others who know and love her she came through it successfully and has been as plucky and dedicated as ever. After the surgery, I think she may have become even more dedicated to the mission and the causes to which she has given so much of herself.

Here on Borderland Beat she has spent more time researching, investigating and writing. She has become the premier writer and reporter on BB. Even better than before.

I could write a 10,000 word essay describing our Grand Lady. Each of you could write your own descriptions of Chivis and all of us together still would not be able to capture how amazing and special this woman is.

She is scheduled to go under the knife for another major surgery on Thursday the 24th of this month.

Abuela Chivis, as some of us who have been around here for a while call her, doesn't complain or feel sorry for herself. The most she has said to me was when she was explaining why she had missed some trivial thing I had asked her about here on BB; (I normally would never reveal the contents of a private email from Chivis or any of our readers without their permission, but in this case I am making an exception because it shows how selfless Chivis is)

"in this case I have not had much time, trying to get ahead of myself with everything because it is unclear how badly my recovery will be after the surgery"

That is typical of Chivis, doing everything she can for us before her surgery. Worrying about us on BB rather than what she was facing in the upoming surgery.

When she had the surgery last year I asked the readers of the Forum to all say a prayer for Chivis while she was having the surgery and for her recovery. Here is an excerpt from that request;

Would all of you join me in praying for her successful surgery and a speedy recovery. Many studies have shown that concentrated prayer for a person with medical problems can have a positive effect. Whatever is your faith, or if you are an atheist or agnostic, lets use prayer, the power of positive thoughts, or whatever you want to call it, to do all we can for our beloved Chivis.

We have readers from around the world who love and respect Chivis and our combined energies might make a difference. I don't know what time her surgery is scheduled because I knew if I asked her she would know what I am doing and tell me not to do it. She wouldn't want to worry everybody. That is just how Chivis is. The most unselfish person I know.

All of what I posted last year asking for your prayers still applies today (except for the time and date of her surgery). The link for that plea is HERE. You can read the comments from some of the many many people who care for her, and her response to us after the surgery. Part of her response to everyone was:

"you can not know how it lifted my spirits and jump started my kick ass courage."

    Dear Buggs,

This is wonderful that you and the B.B. crew have dedicated this page in wishing Madame Chivis to her upcoming surgery and speedy recovery . . . Many (inlcuding myself) here in the U.S. have followed Madame Chivis and the B.B. crew for many years and we are grateful for the thousands of articles, posts, and breaking news regarding narco war.

But I'm going to be a «Debbie Downer» this morning and ask you why would you post a photo of Madame Chivis? We all know journalists and bloggers have been targeted, especially in the N.E. region (Tamaulipas, etc.) and have been brutally murdered.

I could be wrong and that is a photo of someone else?

  74. 7:44- whether it is researched info.,cut and pasted or original coverage which they do have- how else are we to get it? I don't speak Spanish or dare to go to a narco trial. Not to mention beginning to formulate a coherent thought about this huge puzzle that is Mexico. Give a break. They are people with busy lives like us who are devotong their time shedding light for us- you don't hear them boasting they are reporting on the front lines in Acapulco they just keep on presenting info. They contribute. The least you can be is a little appreciative. Keep the rotteness off of Chivis's page. She rules and and needs positive energy to gain fortitude for her operation!

  90. Hola Everyone….
I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and love from BB readers on mainboard, forum and emails. When DD posted the post on forum initially I sent him an email and asked that it be removed. But, I re-read it and the love and thoughtfulness was so that I changed my mind. Then Buggs picked it up for mainboard and that meant more to me than anyone can know.

I appreciate that some of you are a little concerned that I posted the foto, I added the foto after careful consideration and discussion with my close friends in Mexico. We decided it was harmless. In fact one said “it could be matched to thousands of Mexicanas.

Your comments have been entertaining . Some made me smile, others lol, and it was so great to hear from some of my old BB friends.

The surgery was postponed because of an issue with my lungs, lungs of course must not be compromised when being placed on a ventilator for hours. I have had several bouts with pneumonia and lung infections for 18 months, doesn't seem fair for a person who can't stand the smell of cig smoke, and never has been a smoker. The lungs are not the health problem I have been fighting, but is annoying none the less. I am on steroids and already responding nicely, here in the comments is one from “Ro from El Paso” she is a nurse and now jefa of my doctors office, she is rescheduling the surgery but we think 10-14 days. At the office I am known as the “VIP” patient and have cultivated a group of friends, who always are there for me giving me great support, and extra care.

I will print out these comments and take with me on my next hospital trip, they have been more than comforting they have amazed me. Honestly, after 15 surgeries one tends to be “over it” but with the support of my family and friends in Mexico, & US, the staff at the offices of the kindest doctor in the world and my BB family I am now Chivis ala “Rocky”.

    Abrazos,
    Chivis

    PS.
The reporter in me wants to ask the reader from Thailand how did he find BB and his interest in the Mexican Drug War…where did it come from?

  97. A greatly thanks to Chivis for the tireless work you did for the public in the past years. Without BB, we won't know much about Mexican drug war and other details related to this topic. Kia kaha (New Zealand Maori words for 'Stay positive'), and we look forward to having you back on board again. Also, great thanks to Chivis' teammates for their support and keep BB alive. BB is one of the best websites to visit. Thank you again.

  98. GET WELL SOON, CHIVIS

Take all this energy and convert it to healing energy with meditation and visualization.

You can do it. It works.

  99. Ms. Chivis, I am adding my good thoughts and prayers to everyone else's! I hope you have someone to help you *rest* for the next 2 weeks, like you're supposed to. :D I don't post a lot but I read you so much I feel like I know you so well, so I'm very concerned, and am sending healing and supporting energies for you.

  100. 7:24PM your words are so kind. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and appreciate it more than I can express.

Yes, I know you! I really do read every comment I see, sent to me. And I try to respond and I always research the subject that readers want to know about or give a tip about. I would not be doing my job if I didn't. All the reporters work very hard, but because I am so interactive I think I get more glory than is fair.

Havana works her butt off tying stories together from multiple sources, Vato takes on those never ending Zeta Mag and Proceso articles with flawless translations, Malo is ever ending searching for stories to write about or post. and Tijuano keeps us informed with just breaking news from TJ and Baja.

BTW Tijuano was a reader of BB who began sending me TRANSLATED posts complete with photos for me to consider posting. They all were so successful, that one day after the 3rd or 4th I said "you don't need me, let me talk to Buggs but why don't you become a reporter and post these yourself?".

I mean wow, I loved doing so little work for a post, but I knew he would do well and he could do it directly. He was a little apprehensive about his English being a second language, and BTW self taught, but since he lives in TJ, born and raised, he had passion, I told him "let me take care of grammar critic and you just do your thing." and the grammar policia did come out at first, but by article 3 he had a huge following. A cult following I call it :)

Buggs is quiet, but always hovering with his finger on the pulse. He will come in and robo post which makes it seems he is not around, trust me he watches over everything. He is a damn good writer also. Look at the beginning of BB, he wrote most of those posts. Gerardo gave many years of outstanding reporting, Ovemex etc. It is a revolving crew, but everyone has worked so diligently for Buggs project out of our great concern and deep love of Mexico.

We have a good mix of reporters with varied specific interests or special concern for a given region. and bring that to our readers.

    Paz
    Chivis

  101. 7:24 pm Chivis gets an awful lot of deserved attention. Her calibre is unmatchable but she holds the other Borderland Beat reporters to a high standard. They are high quality and deserve cudos as well. All of them have important articles of Mexican drug war coverage in their Borderland Beat files.

I've know Chivis a long time . My heart is heavy but I am optimistic from all the praying and good will extended to such a wonderful individual.
