Amid death threats Dr Mierles appeals to Human Rights Commission

Borderland Beat

"We are no longer afraid of being murdered by the Templarios. We're afraid of being murdered by the state because we are affecting their interests. ..."

I recently was sent information, a video (other than the video featured on this post), email addys, Paypal, wire transfer info to send donations.  I actually translated the video but before I posted I attempted to send a test paypal donation and the account was closed. I have not tried the bank wire, yet.  I have to determine how to do so without revealing personal information.  I did however researched and found his office address, two personal email addys and his office phone.  I plan to contact him directly and ask the best way to send donations from interested parties, I will keep you posted.....Paz, Chivis

Translated by J. Lopez

Rather than a detailed transcription, here is a more detailed summary of Dr. Mireles' words:

"We don't want to keep on burying innocent people. Just yesterday, some farm laborers were hung in an avocado farm that belonged to the Rangel brothers. Day before yesterday, the Templarios came to the farm and ran them off and took their 80 hectare farm where they were growing avocados, but they kept the laborers. Then yesterday, they killed and hung 6 workers who had never been involved in the self defense forces. They were simple workers .

We need help from the international community to get justice. We are not criminals and we don't want to be criminalized. We are simply civilian citizens who are defending our families, our lives, our rights.

Death threats

We want the nation to understand that we cannot go on with our eyes blindfolded, and that's the real tragedy, that we have opened our eyes.

That's the tragedy for this government. They have already warned me to keep my mouth shut or they will come and pick me up, the system itself, the government itself. They want to disarm me. I don't use firearms. You've seen me in videos. The only weapons I have are justice, truth and reason. Those are the only weapons and they have given orders to take them from me.

They've ordered a seal placed over my mouth, but I cannot live my life with my head buried in the sand, watching them kill my neighbors, who were born right in front of my house. It's impossible for a rational human being to accept those conditions: 'If you don't shut up, we're going to go there and pick you up and murder you."

And I want to make it very clear: the threats are not coming from the Templarios, and there will be more evidence coming out. That's why we need your help to disseminate the truth. Those are the only weapons I can use; defend the truth, defend justice and defend reason. Those are the only weapons. But with them, I have annoyed a lot of people in very high places. We need your support, please help us.

To the Commission on Human Rights in Mexico: I hope you listen to me. I called the Mexican Human Rights Commission and they responded four months after I called them for help. I hope the International Commission on Human Rights will be more effective, I hope they have people with the ideals to help us, because, after we're dead, why would we need human rights? When none of the ones standing here to fight survives, why would we need defense that only exists on paper?

The human rights of Mexicans are enshrined in the Constitution. We also know about human rights in the Hague, in Colombia, in the U.N, and we hope they will listen.

We demand intervention by the International Human Rights Commission. This is something that cannot be denied us.

All we are doing is to keep on burying our dead, and sometimes we just bury their heads, because we don't even have the right to look for the bodies of our friends, of our neighbors.

We urgently need international help. We know that the Secretary of the Interior does want to help put a stop to all of this. But obviously, they have to rely on the state government even if they won't get another cent. I hope they won't (?kill?) more people. But we need the federal government to help us.

And if these people want to keep on killing innocent people, let them come after us men, we have weapons, don't kill people who are working the fields, picking lemons or avocados, whose only weapons are the boxes they use to collect what they harvest.

That's why we remain barricaded in our towns, why we don't allow people through, although we are attacked every day. But it's necessary for the federal government to help us, to pressure the state government so it will not be so vicious, so brazen.

They keep picking up innocent people and killing them, saying, "These are the men who murdered the congressman," when the people who were with him saw their faces because they were not even covered.

You cannot hide the sun with a finger, even if you have total control of the mass media. Because we who live here, under fire, have opened our eyes. They cannot deceive us with the lies they spread through the media.

Help us, please, so our message gets to the Secretary of Interior. We have a lot of trust in that gentleman because when the state government tried to lie about what happened in Michoacán, he told them he did not agree with them. The federal government needs to come here and do its job. We cannot do the job of the federal government. We are only civilians defending our families.

You know that after this, they're going to come after me, but it's worth it, worth the lives of all of us [his voice breaks here] if justice is done.

We urgently need protection and support of the International Commission on Human Rights and the U.N. Because the self-defense groups are being executed one by one, and our families, who have never been involved with the self-defense forces, are being decapitated in any ranch where the Templarios find them.

It is urgent that you listen to us. We need it. The massacre has begun. Mr. Nazario threatened to execute 300 people this month. He has already killed more than 50. And to this day, we have not seen any response by the state to defend the people.

We need for the International Human Rights Commission to give us any help it can, to defend us.

I'm just a civilian citizen who is defending my family. We need help from the International Human Rights Commission. We are no longer afraid of being murdered by the Templarios. We're afraid of being murdered by the state because we are affecting their interests.

We are productive, hard-working people, not criminals, so don't try to portray us as criminals. To the International Human Rights Commission, our lives and those of our families are in your hands. Thank you."

  3. Chivis - an important story. But more detail is needed to make it understandable to outsiders. Who is Mr Nazario and who does he work for? How are the actions of the state government different from the Federal Government here? Does Dr Mierles trust anyone in authoritiy in Mexico - really - or does hope only come from outside Mexico? He is currently very caught up in his own series of events, but most outsiders do not know enough about how everything fits together.

  7. @10:40AM.....as an outsider here in Canada I don't need 'more to understand' the slaughter, corrupt government and utter dispair that is happening in much of Mexico.

Complacency is rife. At the very least oustsiders like myself must talk on their Facebook and/or in everyday conversation about the greed and sadistic slaughter by corrupt officials of defenseless innocent Mexicans.

I tell any Canadian who plans a Mexican vacation to read BB. How can we hop on a plane, bask in the sun on a Mexican beach while somewhere nearby torture, kidnapping, and depraved human slaughtering takes place.

Most everyone, and often myself, think that there is NOTHING we can do to help. Most people i speak to about the horror show in Mexico reply, 'well it's only happening in a few Mexican States with the drug cartels'. Why do many of my fellow Canadians believe this? Because so little is reported on the subject in our news.

Sure, the occasiona headline in the newspaper or TV news blurts out a sensational headline "14 Mexican cartel members killed"...but that's the extent of it.

It sickens me hearing our radio stations giving away trips to Mexico in contests to ecstatic winners who are clueless to the reality of their dream vacation is really oblivian to Hell.

Other than trying to talk and educate people about the political crisis resulting in this socio human cruelty I ask all of you reading this to write to BB with suggestions as to how we can help. We need the tools to set aside complacency and ignorance. Write and send YOUR suggestions now.

  8. hivis - I will check your stories from before about this subject.
Canadian Girl: it is difficult to change public opinion in the US or Canada ... many strong perceptions of Mexico already exist. Sympathy is low. I don't know if BB is the focal point or any plans to help Dr Mierle - did Chivis say this? it's likely that his aspirations will not die if he can attract enough outside attention. exacly what that attention would be - is hard to say. but it's not impossible.

I wouldn't send money. It will only get pickpocketed by corrupt men.
If Mr Mierles wants to save his people - he better learn to pick up a rifle and SHOOT STRAIGHT. It is the only language that the cartels will understand. If enough men like him do it - it will leave a mark.

  19. The Federal Gov't of Mexico will only pay attention to Dr. Mierles if he starts a true grass-roots revolution amongst the poor. He can only succeed in this if he expands his power base - which means he must broaden his support amongst Mexicans. And he must do it very quickly. Otherwise he is likely to be dead in another month. That is what the state and the Government are counting on.

Dr. Mierles needs to stop sounding like an academic - and start sounding like a leader. He needs to put forwards a platform of ideas, and Statement Of Beliefs. He needs to tell people what he really stands for ... in a few sentences with clear powerful language.

His men need to get weapons and ammunition, work out a plan of defense, and get ready to shoot straight. This is Mexico - there are no Ghandi's in this country. Forget peace talks and appeals. These people better fight - or they will be gone very soon.

  23. @9:30: I agree with your sentiments/

But I strongly disagree with how you wish Dr. Mireles act and should communicate, to wit,,

"Dr. Mierles needs to stop sounding like an academic - and start sounding like a leader. He needs to put forwards a platform of ideas, and Statement Of Beliefs. He needs to tell people what he really stands for ... in a few sentences with clear powerful language."

With all due respect, Dr. Mireles' charisma "is" his proven leadership via his calm demeanor and "eloquence" (which might sound academic to some). Further, this man, is a true and humble "worker" within his own community. I've watched some other video in which he appears and he always seems to be giving credit the others.... despite the fact that he is obviously one of the leaders in the autodefensa activities.

Mexico does NOT need impulsive "shit spitters".... history shows that these are often sitting ducks for elimination directly or by "accident". IMO, Dr. Mireles, is a brillant "gentleman" and tactician with great powers of leadership among the common Mexican "especially".

This man is reserved (academic) in how he communicates because it is "his" personality and because he understand the situation his people are in from a broader "international" perspective. For Dr. Mireles to change his "presentation of self" for the sake of emotional arousal and passion in people, does in fact work, for a time. However, the tactic can backfire as Hitler and many other political and charismatic "blow-hards" have proven throughout history.

Finally, Dr. Mireles, might just be the right gut to appear on FOX News to plead his case and expose Mexico for what it is today... ( CNN, MSNBC, Univision. etc. have no credibility). Why "exposing" Mexico for what it "is" to the general American public via the MSM is puzzling .... and very disturbing to me.

  27. The entire problem is misperception / misconception whether it be Canada or anywhere else . All they think of is the tourists view that everything is beautiful and peaceful in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Mazatlan,Puerta Vallarta ,Cancun . They (the tourists and normal folk cannot perceive the rapes, decapitations, extorcion, colgados, narco fosas , bodies dissolved in acid. 100,000, die , missing , so tourism can flourish. Its all in the name of money . No one from anywhere would really vacation in Mexico if they saw all the videos of horror and knew what was was happening .
So , to keep the tourism machine going no one reports the horror.
$$$$$$ The Mexico citizen dies at the cost of a few 100,000, "ordinary Mexican lives" Most people world wide would vomit /puke if they saw 49 decapitated bodies and a few parts left over if they saw such a site.
Somebody help these poor people ....

I understand there is a lot of public sympathy for Dr Mierles, and all that is very good. But sympathy will not stop a bullet, and it only takes one shot to bring him down. The cartels - like the Templarios - certainly know this.

If you want to help him - make calls to the US State Department, or whatever the equivalent department is in Canada. Maybe if there are enough callers, a message will be sent to the Federal Government in Mexico to provide him some protection.

Otherwise, it is nice that Dr. Mierles looks like a professional. But the words at the top of the article about him - talk about death. That is not exactly positive or inspiring. If he wants his people to survive, he needs to motivate them in a positive way. That is what leaders do. He doesn't have to become Pancho Villa - but he does have to lead.

Good luck Dr Mierles and may God go with you.

I see some reports in Europe think Mireles and the other auto defense groups have "no right to conduct vigilantism"...they are obviously ignorant to the constitution article 10 and 2 giving indigenous communities the right to self govern and self defense.

some nations think they are trouble makers fighting the government unfairly and not allowing the government to conduct their duty.
