Mexico City residents disarm

Mexico City residents have swapped personal firearms for consumer products in a program political and social leaders have termed a success, according to Mexican news reports.

In a  wire dispatch from El Universal that appeared on the website of El Diario de Coahuila, the program called depistolizacion or depistolization has received almost 6,000 firearms and munitions including grenades.

According to data supplied by Secretaria de Seguridad Publica (SSP)  Jesus Rodriguez Almeida, 5,641 firearms were turned in of which 3,987 were pistols, 356 were grenades, a bomb, one weapons magazine and 44,495 rounds of ammunition.

The program begun five months ago is set to end this summer.

According to the report, cash and prizes totalling MX $8,030,500 (USD $624,202.73) were passed out. Non cash rewards given out included 16 laptop computers, 1,900 tablets, 251 bicycles and 183 appliances of undisclosed types.

The report quoted Rodriguez Almeida as saying the program was intended to disarm the civilian population in the city's 16 municipalities.

The program had the help of the church and local Catholic parishes were used as collections centers for the firearms.  Among the leaders who helped push the program included Distrito Federal president Miguel Angel Mancera, Cardinal Norberto Rivera and Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu.

A second program will start soon, but its time was not specified in news accounts.

  1. If I were to take a look at the info provided here on BB and other sites and throwing in some of the execution videos I've seen. There is no way in hell I would turn over my weapon to the mexican authorities. I would be thinking how can I add more fire power to my collection. You have to be on guard in Mexico because you never know when some shit is going to go down.

  2. wow how goddamned stupid and brainwashed are these people....lambs to the slaughter indeed!

These are the type of people that will jump on a train if the gov. asked them, these are the type of human sheeps that will dig their own grave if gov. asked them nicely..."Please MR citizen, can you dig your own grave so i dont hurt my back after i shoot you?" "Yes Mr government, i'm digging, i'm digging"

  9. Give the people free stuff to disarm, that's a bad idea. It seems a bicycle or laptop are worth more than your life. The cartels will have no problem running the plazas with it's residents unarmed. Good job Mexican government, way to look out for your citizens.

  10. I wonder how much money president nieto is getting for sending his own people to the slaughter house. We all know the police in Mexico city are in the take, now the president. As bad as it was under Calderon, i only see it getting worse, you can't make deals with these devils.

  14. Never, ever would I turn in my only means of defense in a country obviously fighting a drug war with not one, but many cartels who r ruthless. No wonder things r getting worse, civilians r being disarmed & left helpless against the evil forces in mexico. Government not stupid they know why they are doing this, its the innocent, goodhearted civilians who can't comprehend the truth of it all. Mexican government "biggest cartel " so sad & wrong.

  15. Check your closets, check the garage. You may have a grenade or bomb laying around. De-clutter and you could get a laptop!

  16. I think the headlines are misguiding, these programs are nothing new, they take place all around the country and they are aimed not so much at regular citizens who legally own a gun but to provide a way for those owning ilegal firearms to turn them in without questions and get something in exchange, and from that point of view I think it´s a positive program.

    2. How about a program to disarm cartel members? oh yeah that's not working out so let's go after Mexican citizens..really nothing positive in a country with corruption..where are the guns kept or destroyed? No one will ever know but most likely resold in the streets by corrupt cops.

  18. you can own certain firearms in México, the legislation is quite restrictive compared to the US but there´s no prohibition.

  19. Well, all they have to do is wait for the next shoot out and then re-stock their armory. Junior gets a new bici and daddy gets to upgrade his mata-conejos. Its a win win situation!

  20. After what I saw last week in BB and other blogs, the last thing I would want to do is turn in the weapons that protect me and my family. These Zetas and Gulfos basterds have no respect for human life. Dismembering and decapitating innocents and a grandma.

  23. The same people who draft these ideas and formulate ever so common sense ideas into peoples psyche, are the same people who never have to deal with crime on a personal physical level. These people will live in upscale residential areas, they have cars to get them to and from home and work, they live and shop in different areas, they live in a bubble of protection,so basically, don't listen to self serving hypocrites and plain liars, would you give up belongings to a stranger in the street? Why would anyone believe what a politician etc has to say?The stranger in the street probably has more real heart than any of these people.

  24. R u fucking kidding? I come out of oakland calif and dont live in a bubble and broke as a joke but i still would NEVER EVER give up my weapons for self protection!!!
