Forbes Most Wealthy List: Chapo No Mas

By Chivis Martinez Borderland Beat

No Longer the Headline
Four years ago the decision to include Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman in the Forbes Billionaire List was a horrible one on just about every level imaginable.  Guzman is the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel arguably the most powerful drug trafficker on the planet.

However, if one simply reduces the cons to a level of verifiable mathematics the decision made zero sense.
In a larger sense, by the inclusion of Guzman, Forbes denigrates its list, while at the same time fortifying glorification of the fruits of criminality.
The Mexico delegation of Worlds most powerful  Lineup in past years: Guzman, EPN and Slim
One can surmise the decision not to include Guzman in the 2013 list is a pragmatic approach to end the criticisms of a 4 year flawed decision.  Regrettably Forbes attempted to justify the decision with sensible reasoning.  Regrettable because it highlights the very basic standards ignored in the first place.

How does an entity deem a person’s wealth without subjecting that wealth to verification?
It was a stunner in 2009 when Guzman made the list with a fortune listed at $1 Billion.
Forbes senior wealth editor Luisa Kroll said the decision to drop Guzman was based on suspicions that "an increasing chunk of money is going to protect him and his family."

Kroll said in a statement Monday that Guzman is "no longer someone we are confident enough to call a billionaire, "and, “that he could not be reached to verify figures on his wealth”. (this last statement was my favorite)

Right…and he was in 2009?
2010?
2011?
Forbes would have gained great respect by simply stating “it was a mistake and we are correcting that mistake now”
On another note Mexican Carlos Slim (Telecom magnate) continues to head the list, with a fortune estimated at $73 billion.

No one should get rich off the backs of others dishonestly i dont care who they are or what side of the border they are on.not a fan of bush/cheney they were HUGE crooks.i would rather die poor and be able to sleep at night and give an account to the good lord for my actions and he dont accept cash as a bribe

    1. In my opinion, the wealthiest narcos that are still alive include: Juan Esparragoza el Azul,Vicente Carillo viceroy,Ismael Zambada el mayo,Hector Beltran el H,Joaquin Guzman el Chapo.possibly in that order.

The wealthiest narcos of all times from Mexico:Amado Carillo will always be at the top,Miguel angel felix gallardo, pedro aviles, ramon arellano, arturo Beltran,mayo/ chapo

    2. No mames. EL CHAPO should be first then el joto del H, El MZ and Vicente Carillo. He puts in more work than all thos 3 conbined. All el mayo zambada does is chill back in Culiacan. And El chapo goes all around Mexico regulating his states.

      Delete
    3. Well,i though of putting Vicente Carillo first, than Azul but Azul does have the longest time active, out of all, than Viceroy,Mayo,El H,and than Chapo.

Anyone that knows whats going on,knows that EL Mayo is more powerful, and respected than El Chapo, and " maybe" even richer.

And i put el H on top of Chapo because remember those mutilated bodies in Culiacán that were signed by Z40, than el chapo went to Nuevo Laredo, and respondió by saying" we know that you(Z40) ordered el H and his people to dump the bodies here,( Culiacán) because you dont have the people, and the balls to do it yourself." And goes on to insult.Z-40 ,yet never disrespects el H.

There were some glaring inconsistencies in the billionaire fib. Why would a billionaire risk having his wife go to the US to have a kid? The US has a very high infant mortality rate. No, a billionaire would bring in a medical team.

Forbes can't talk about the big US monied interests that take the lion's share of the drug market profits.

  11. Juan Garcia Abrego,of CDG, was said to have accumulated $17 billion before his capture in 1996. Rafael Caro Quintero accumulated $600 million before his capture in 1985. He offered to pay Mexico's foreign debt of $80billion. His marijuana growing farm, Campo Buffalo in Chihuahua, had estimated annual earnings of $2.3 to $8billion.

  12. Carlos Slim should not be on that list, changing laws of mexico to facilitate his monopoly and changing them back so no one can challenge him. I hope the Sultan of Brunei is on there, Kim Jong Un and other who rape and pillage their country to amass their fortune. At least Chapo doesn't hide behind some bullshit excuse to how he got his cash...still a bad man tho, however people who take drugs know what they're getting into, but do we really know the effects of cell phones yet with the radiation?? With their war industries and harmful meds and bully corporations. But since its ok by American standards its fine. Sell tobacco. But not weed.

  21. i wonder how much legitimate money is floating around through mexico's halls of power, only if they would release a small chunk of it to the poorest places, like the colonias around juarez, man those places look bobmbed out and depleted, why do mexican politicos turn such a blind eye, thats why they act so defensive when asked, if there is that much poverty in their back yard, you cant blame others for misallocating money to upkeep those in and around ones city, especially if they have the power to lay some concrete. get it done it wont hurt, and then claim your accolades..

  22. In 1989 Pablo Escobar made the Forbes list with 25 Billion USD. With syntetic drugs business and a larger consumption of drugs today I can assure you El Chapo has over 50 Billion .Parents show your kids from an early age "say no to Drugs" don't allow them to become customers .Saludos a Texas Grandma aka TG 78

  23. Chapo must have at least 50 billion by now. He owned a fleet of lear jets back in the 80s. He is a lot richer now by a long shot.

  24. You can look at it also that Carlos Slim's monopoly has created less competition/jobs in Mexico therefore fueling the ranks of the cartel, or he empowers the culture of corruption in Mexico in how he got his company positioned the way he has which just give the green light for anyone to corrupt the govt....greed is the underlying theme and fosters the worst of mankinds traits.....

  32. Who said El Chapo kill's innocents?? He is highly against killing innocent people and my friend was in Mex and some sicarios went to there small town to play basketball (lol) and they were telling the people that they work for El Chapo and that they are protecting them from Los Zetas

  33. It would be interesting for someone to actually calculate the wealth of the current capos. I am sure it can be done, just would need real data from real people involved to do it. You know the government has done it, they aren't fooling anyone. If Chapo, Mayo and Azul or any other big time capo for that matter (Beltran,Carrilo etc), are making 40% profit on birds on full ton loads and flipping those numbers on lbs. That is a ton of paper, now how much of that gets broken down into years and years of doing that? Now if they are the big dons, alot of money goes to protection (government on all levels) payroll and foot soldiers. One thing can be said for sure, the narco game is super lucrative and that is not going anywhere. It generates an economy of it's own.

  38. I´m with Chivis on this one, I believe el Mayo when he said neither him nor Chapo are billionaires. It doesn´t matter how many drug users are now, what drugs they use, those who sell them on the street, those who move them from city to city, those who cross them thru the border, those who bring it to cities like Juarez and TJ, those who make them DON´T work for free, neither the police who protect them, there´s lots of money involved, but MOST of it never gets to the bosses hands, in this case chapo´´s hands.

Rafael Caro Quintero's ranch generated between $2.9 to 8 billion a year in 1980's dollars. Given the right impunity, he could have generated enough money in 10 to 30 years to pay off Mexico's debt if he chose to. Mind you, I'm just talking about the money he was making from marihuana sales, not from revenue from other drugs and businesses he could have made. He already had $600 million, he didn't need any more.
