Armed suspects detonate 3 grenades near Nuevo Laredo US Consulate -- UPDATED

UPDATED:  According to an El Universal news update, unidentified sources with the Tamaulipas state Procuraduria General del Estado office said that explosions never took place.   However, a news account published on the website of Vanguardia news daily said gunfire as well as explosions were heard in the area.  That account can be seen here.  The official news release by the US Consulate can be found here.  The tweet from the US Consulate in Nuevo Laredo linking to the announcement can be seen here.

A shootout between armed drug gangs took place last Thursday evening near the US Consulate in Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, according to Mexican news accounts.

A news account published on the website of La Tarde news daily said the gunfight took place near the intersection of Paseo Colon and Calle Allende at around 1920 hrs.  No one was reported hurt in the incident.

The US Consulate is located near the intersection of calles Allende and Nayarit.

According to press reports, armed suspects from rivalling gangs shot at each other near the US Consulate.  Included in the exchanges of gunfire were the detonation of three hand grenades.

Reports say that intervention by Mexican security forces including Mexican Army and Policia Federal troops forced the armed groups to flee the scene.  No detentions were reported in the aftermath.

Nuevo Laredo was the scene of a mass execution where four individuals were shot to death last Monday. Three of the victims were identified as US citizens.  Unconfirmed reports in the area said that another five unidentified individuals were shot and killed as well.

Last February 1st, seven armed suspects were killed in an encounter with a Mexican Army road patrol near Ciudad Victoria, the capital of Tamaulipas state.

Nuevo Laredo has been the focal point if an intense and bloody competition between the Los Zetas and Gulf Cartels.  Nuevo Laredo has been known to be in the past  Los Zetas territory until last summer, when several grisly incidents signalled that competition for control of the US border crossing was beginning.

    1. 11:26 pm. Whenever I read BB, I for one have extreme sadness over the continued mayhem, murder, innocent people being caught up in this con.'t war for "PLAZA'S", to have access to the US. Without fail, there are always people(scumbags), who ignore the content and meaning of this site, and feel the need to joke(as in HERE COME THE NEW BOSSES) or become cheerleaders for the cartels. Who are you people? Are you drug dealers? Are you heartlast idiots who have no life or soul? Do you understand this site is to educate people about the insanity in Mexico or just don't care? I feel anger and pity for many of you. Don't they have narco sites on the internet where you can make jokes and rah rah your favorite cartels? Thanks Chris for the article. As always, love RANTBURG.COM and BB., Texas Grandma. Peace.

  6. I was in Nuevo Laredo recently, and in Mexico City working with MPJD and LEAP to stop the violence, which includes ending the US prohibition of marijuana. This alone would de-fund the cartels, which includes the US and Mexican government cartels, military, police, and the CIA. Please join us in this struggle for peace with justice and dignity. The time is now!

    "gramma" errors?

see how easy it is? And only one sentence. :)

we are volunteers and my position is if there is an error that changes the context of the story-I want to know, and I will change it. Other wise as long as you can read and comprehend the story then I feel the job is complete.....paz, chivis

  14. Security Message (February 08, 2013)

The U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico alerts U.S. citizens traveling and residing in the Nuevo Laredo Consular District to an increase in violence related to Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCO) in and around Nuevo Laredo. In the past week, there have been at least 8 murders and 5 arson attacks on local residences. On the evening of February 7, 2013, a series of gun battles between TCO elements included three grenade explosions in the vicinity of the U.S. Consulate General in Nuevo Laredo. Mexican law enforcement sources tell us the increased violence is likely the result of rival TCO elements fighting for control of the city and that similar attacks are likely to continue in the near-term.

Danger to innocent bystanders is high, and the U.S. Consulate urges all U.S. citizens to review their personal security plans; remain aware of their surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security, and follow instructions of local authorities.

In order to receive the most current security information available, the U.S. Consulate in Nuevo Laredo encourages all United States Citizens living in or visiting the Nuevo Laredo Consular district to “Follow Us” on Twitter, or “Like Us” on Facebook. The Consulate will use Twitter and Facebook to disseminate regular and time sensitive information related to the security situation in and around Nuevo Laredo.
