The Origins of Los Zetas and its Founders

The Zetas are a Mexican criminal organization, whose main business is kidnapping, car theft, murder, extortion and drug trafficking.

The group was formed from a group of soldiers who deserted the Special Forces Airmobile Group (GAFE), Amphibious Group Special Forces (GANFE) and the Parachute Rifle Brigade (BFP) of the Mexican Army, founded in 1994 to mark the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas and one traditional group of elite soldiers who were trained by the CIA of the United States, commandos of military advisories of the Israeli Sayeret Matkal and the French GIGN.

They received specialized training that included handling of sophisticated weapons and counterinsurgency work. According to the Attorney General's Office (PGR), at least 40 former members of the Gafes have joined the ranks of the Zetas.

Further more Los Zetas have in their ranks an undetermined number of former special forces from Guatemala (also trained by the CIA, and have charges of genocide in that country).

In early March of 2010 it was confirmed the de facto separation of Los Zetas from the Gulf Cartel. Recent research has shown that this criminal group has begun recruiting young civilians, including minors and illegal immigrants trying to cross the border between Mexico and the United States. They currently have an alliance with the Juarez Cartel.

Its area of influence was originally Tamaulipas but later extended their activity to Nuevo Leon and Coahuila. Movements have also been reported in Nayarit, Sonora, Sinaloa (Los Mochis), Puebla, Hidalgo, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi, Durango, Tabasco, Campeche, Guanajuato, Queretaro (San Juan del Rio), Veracruz, Oaxaca and Tlaxcala.

Unlike any other drug cartels in Mexico, Los Zetas do not exercise total control over any port of the Republic for the sole purpose of drug trade, so they have been forced to strengthen their finances with practices such as kidnapping and extortion against the civilian population. As a consequence the criminal group of Los Zetas have become more repudiated by the public and persecuted by the authorities as well as rival criminal organizations.

Agreed-exterminated on the spot like the roaches they are. Seeing the damage they cause Mexico first hand, I think a bounty on their heads would benefit all.

  6. I don't like the Zetas style with the way they direct their exploitation so cruelly toward the public (so the media reports). It sure seems like they are the lower class revolting in the only way they can to survive and get ahead. As some have said, it is better to die standing with a gun in your hand than on your knees with your head down in poverty, shame, and hunger. Two things are going on in the media. They want everyone to hate the challenging cartel, and they want love and support for the popular one who actually does all the above crimes also.

Why is it that the Mexican media fails to report any of the events causing mass destruction, death, fear, chaos, despair, poverty, and loss of virtually all business opportunity which was done by the prevailing cartel. For instance, the invasions of Tijuana, Juarez, Nuevo Laredo, in the beginning, then all other plazas later. And please do not respond with the invasion of Nuevo Laredo was by BLO because it was done before the split.

This drug war is more about criminal organizations and their political allis in the south versus criminal organizations and their political allies from the north. A truce will come, and their will be little change in who runs each plaza when it does. The PRI will hang PAN out to dry exposing all their corruption before there is a truce.

They are all criminal organization, all equally bad.

    1. Ya, you did miss something..! And that
      Is that the average law
Abiding mexican isn't a gunman and has no idea about killing people or where the hell to get a gun even if he had the $5000. For an AK!! What Mexico has to do is invest that confiscated monies and hire mercenaries who know what the f..k their doing and can take on these murderers and drug barrons

What? Your an idiot most Americans don't even have a clue about the Zetas or any other DTO operating in Mexico! The biggest misconception in Mexico or any where else...is that the U.S. (vast majority of citizens) are worried/concerned or well versed in the drug war in Mexico! WRONG..the majority of Americans are oblivious to Mexico's drug war. Just like the Americans, who use drugs have no clue, where the drugs come from or which DTO is the supplier. I'm talking about the users not the middle men suppliers.

As far as, the article is concerned...same old crap. By now, anybody who follows the drug war in Mexico..know all about the Zetas. I will add..the Zetas, when they were the strong arm for the CDG are far different than today's Zetas. The myth surrounding the original Zetas is noteworthy..they were well a disciplined and precise "killing machines," who brought a level of expertise to the table that today's Zetas do not have! The organization today is very chaotic and no longer filled with an elite rank and file members!

  17. Things seem to keep on getting worse in Mexico, it's totally out of control there, no matter how much the Mexican government and non corrupt police and non corrupt military try to crack down on the cartels it makes no difference, the cartels keep retaliating with more violence more brutality and more chaos and destruction, there is simply no hope, it is a war that can not be won, the cartels are simply too big and too powerful and there is too much corruption in the Mexican government Mexican police and Mexican military, most Mexican politicians police officers and military officers are corrupt and are involved with the cartels and work for the cartels and help and protect the cartels and thats why the cartels can not be defeated and stamped out.

  21. This may be off topic but the 10+ years I lived in Los Angeles I knew many Mexicans who fled to get away from Cartel violence looking for a better life for their families. Those people were hard workers doing the jobs that most Americans wouldn't even think of doing and they did it for less pay when they deserved a higher wage! I also knew members of 18th Street, FS13, PF13, etc that didn't deserve to be in the US but their numbers were far less than the Mexicans who were here illegally and contributed to society in a positive manner. It's a shame that uninformed US citizens support the deportation of immigrants categorizing them as criminals or potential criminals. I can hardly wait for the replies from hateful Americans telling me to get outta my own country.... Have a nice day!
