Monterrey Rayados goalie abducted by gunmen

Nuevo Leon authorities were not commenting today on reports that a goalie for the Monterrey Rayados football club was abducted Wednesday by a group of armed men outside of his home in the municipality of San Nicolas, in the greater Monterrey metropolitan zone.

The player, Omar “El Gato” Ortiz, is currently serving a suspension after testing positive for banned substances.

Jorge Domene, Nuevo Leon’s Public Safety spokesman, would not confirm or deny that Ortiz was abducted by gunmen or possibly arrested by a branch of a state or federal security forces.

Adrian de la Garza, Nuevo Leon’s Attorney General, refused to disclose any information on Ortiz’s kidnapping, saying that doing so may jeopardize the safety of the player.

Neither official stated if Ortiz’s family had filed a formal kidnapping complaint with authorities.

Unnamed family members and friends of the Rayados goalie have reported that he was abducted by unidentified gunmen from his home in San Nicolas early Wednesday morning. Other sources stated that Ortiz was taken by a military or police unit although authorities do not report having him in custody.

Ortiz had previously been the victim of a violent carjacking, after which he commented:

“The important thing is that we are alright, material things can be replaced, although I worry about what may happen in the future, they have all my documents. I hope it all ends here.”

  2. UPATE: Goalie was arrested for links to organized crime:

MEXICO CITY, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Mexican police have arrested
former international soccer goalkeeper Omar Ortiz on suspicion
    of links to organized crime.

An official in the northern state of Nuevo Leon who is close
to the attorney general's office said authorities were due to
present Ortiz to the public on Saturday evening, along with
    other suspected criminals.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said Ortiz
would be paraded with other members of a gang of suspected
    kidnappers.

Known as "El Gato" (The Cat), Ortiz had been missing for
several days, prompting speculation in the media he might have
been kidnapped. In 2010, Ortiz was suspended for doping.

The 35-year-old, a longtime regular for top division side
Monterrey, played a single match for Mexico in 2002.
