Mexican Bishop's Conference: Drug war's cost in blood is inevitable

The president of the Mexican Bishops' Conference (CEM), Carlos Aguiar Retes, stated at a press conference that armed criminal organizations can only be faced with force and therefore the cost in blood of that confrontation is inevitable.

The Catholic Church endorsed the efforts by President Felipe Calderon against drug trafficking and stressed that the highest goal in this war is to prevent corruption from permeating the structure of the state.

The religious leaders stated that only on the precondition that the state is freed of the influence of the drug cartels can the safety of society be guaranteed and brought up the case of Colombia as an example for Mexico where drug trafficking continues but the state structure is no longer infiltrated by cartels

Aguiar also expressed his disagreement with the proposal made by Latin American leaders, including former President Ernesto Zedillo, to decriminalize marijuana use, calling the proposal ridiculous in the context of the pain that this conflict has cost. The fight against drugs, he said, must be a global effort and not a unilateral action.

The bishops stressed that they would work to transform the current crisis experienced by Mexican society that has broken many of the values and virtues of the people.

"Selfishness has developed into a lifestyle, appearing as a result of family disintegration, the unbridled pursuit of power, pleasure and wealth, the loss of respect for people's lives," said the bishops..

The bishop of Mazatlan, Mario Espinoza, said many church representatives do their work with true heroism, because they risk their lives to work for truth and justice in areas hard hit by criminal groups.

  1. The church has maintained a cowardly silence for too long...if they wish to regain any credibility they had best come out for arming the citizenry, a death penalty for crimes utilizing weapons, and condemnation from the pulpit, in every mass, of people who turn a blind eye to cartel members in their own families!!!

  2. We all Know MEXICO LEGALIZED possesion of all kinds of drugs for personal use several years ago,so what is everybody talking about that Mexico needs to legalize drugs,OH I guess they mean by the 18 wheeler load? The WAR on DRUGS was and is a great success the moment Mexico started to try and stop letting the Narcos run State and local Govt. WHAT A JOB THATS GONNA BE,but ONE STEP AT A TIME.

  3. Good. Now we just need the Mexican Bishops to recognize and support the natural and Catholic right of individuals to own the means to defend themselves and to disavow the socailist policies in Mexico that supported the culture of corrpution.

  7. The Catholic Church is all of us, believers and non believers, we are all in it together, some of us do good, some of us do bad. If we all try to follow its teachings, the world would be in a better place to live in until we die. Child molesters or other evils people are not following the teachings of the church, wherever they may be. But there is still hope for everyone "Together we are Christ's Body, each of us a different part " -1Cor 12:27

  8. There is an old Muslim saying that "Peace can only exist under the shade of swords".
The priest is basically saying the same thing, though he is not Muslim. If anything, Mexico needs MORE force against the cartels.

Miss me with that "god" bullshit....you DO NOT need "god" or religion to promote love, unity, or anything....

Religion is the pinnacle of ignorance and immaturity...

All this afterlife,.blah blah.blah shit is for people who are scared of the dark..DEAL WITH IT...its for people who can't deal with the fact WE ARE NOTHING IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS....think of how large the universe...bigger than our mind can comprehend...we are so insignificant...the fact you think your "special" or there's an "afterlife" really points to the immaturity of the human mind...your scared..that's all it is...

Quit praising the "white god"....your further falling into the trap of mind control..

Enlightenment is the most amazing feeling you could ever have...

  11. I'll say it again...Calderon is a modern day patriot, and now he has the backing of the church. That may be just what he needed. God Bless America, Mexico, and the world.

  12. 7:59 am...where is your head at? Mexico's socialist policies? Really?

If Mexico were truly Socialist, there would be no poverty, everyone would have an education and healthcare and food on the table.

Mexico is far from a Socialist state. The US is closer to it than Mexico.

Your facts just don't hold up.

  13. This one was truly a comic classic....

'I'll say it again...Calderon is a modern day patriot, and now he has the backing of the church.'

The PAN has always been the party of the Mexican Catholic Church for the Mexican Catholic Church and loved by the Pope in Rome. Anonymous, you seem to be just now discovering this? LMAO.....

  15. Pretty lukewarm stuff really. Not exactly a full-throated endorsement. Very careful bs.

...highest goal...to prevent corruption... ?? He's kidding, right? He lives in Mexico, right? The state structure has been permeated by corruption for 100 years.

  16. lol @ the Atheist, I would love to see you on judgement day.

Very true, Calderon is indeed a patriot! He is attempting to clean up Mexico, this should have been done decades ago.

  18. 7:05 Did you have some facts you wanted to share? Or are you just trying to look very stupid?

What is "truly socialist"? Oh, just popping off? Oh ok.

  19. President Calderon is no "hero or patriot..." People who are true patriots would go for peace and just make drugs legal... See a what makes a crime a crime is when someone else gets hurt, and if drugs were legalised then no one would get hurt of course the user, but as some of you are sittin' on the fence, and not seperatin' church and state, that's okay because some people like "us" are still out for the rights of all citizens... Decriminazlin' drugs would take the money out of it, that's what makes it so expensive, but it feeds two dogs the drug dealers and the cops paid the ruin peoples lives for what they choose to put in their own bodies... Please seperate your religion from this an think at least half way intellectually. Mexico please vote out Calderon and vote for human life and true freedom, decriminalize drugs... -Concered America aka Okie-
