Inmate Dies in Gunfight at Mexican Prison

An inmate died and two guards were wounded in a fight at a prison in Durango, a state in northern Mexico, the Public Safety Secretariat said.

Federal Police officers found grenades, assault rifles, pistols, ammunition and marijuana during a search conducted Wednesday after order was restored at the prison.

Officers were sent to penitentiary No. 1 in Durango city, the state capital, to stop a gunfight between rival inmates.

The officers seized 14 handguns, three rifles, including two AK-47s, four fragmentation grenades, 28 ammunition clips, 510 rounds of ammunition, eight cell phones, a laptop computer, 135 doses of marijuana and 13,000 pesos (about $1,000) in cash.

Rodolfo Rodriguez Carranza, the prison’s chief guard, was arrested for allowing arms and drugs to enter the facility.

Thirty of the 70 inmates identified as having participated in the fight will be transferred to a federal prison, the secretariat said.

Mexico’s penitentiary system has long struggled to control imprisoned drug traffickers and other gangsters, who bribe officials to obtain what they want, with the case of Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman being a clear example of the problem.

Guzman, who was arrested in Guatemala in 1993, pulled off a Hollywood-style jailbreak when he escaped from the Puente Grande maximum-security prison in the western state of Jalisco on Jan. 19, 2001.

The drug lord, considered extremely violent, is one of the most-wanted criminals in Mexico and the United States, where the Drug Enforcement Administration has offered a reward of $5 million for him.

During his time in prison, Guzman enjoyed privileges and amenities ranging from electronics to prostitutes, media investigations found.

The warden during Guzman’s stay at Puente Grande was released from prison in 2010 after serving a nine-year sentence for aiding the escape.

  1. Mexican prisons are like everything else in Mexico if you have some money you can do what you want, because there is an ingrained heritage of corruption. This war on drugs has laid bare the sorry state of affairs that is a long standing accepted status quo in Mexico.Nobody cared about the lack of order until the criminal element got out of control and its now going to be a BITCH to get things to a level where society can function.

  2. THIS IS EXACTLY MY POINT OF WHY MEXICO NEEDS A DEATH PENALTY! THEIR ENTIRE PRISON SYSTEM IS NOTHING BUT A HUGE JOKE AND THAT IS WHY MEXICO IS SUCH A LAWLESS SOCIETY BECAUSE THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES! YOU CAN KILL AND KILL AND ROB AND KILL SOME MORE IN MEXICO AND NEVER GET CAUGHT, THEY DO NOT INVESTIGATE ANY CRIMES THATS WHY ALL THE MURDERS GO UNSOLVED! ONLY IF A PERSON PASSES OUT DRUNK AT THE CRIME SCENE AND IS STILL THEIR AN HOUR LATER AFTER POLICE FINALLY ARIVE THEY MIGHT GO TO JAIL, MAYBE, IF THEY DONT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY ON THEM TO PAY THEIR WAY FREE... AK 47'S AND GRENADES INSIDE THE PRISON, WHAT A FUCKING JOKE! WHEN ARE THE MEXICAN PEOPLE GOING TO STAND UP AND DEMAND CHANGE? SEE, ITS THE MEXICAN PEOPLE THAT NEED TO STAND UP, THEY HAVE ALLOWED THIS CRIMINAL LIKE STYLE FOR SO LONG THIS IS WHAT THEY GET! A PART OF ME WOULD LOVE TO JUST BUILD A HUGE WALL AT THE BORDER AND BE DONE WITH IT BUT I THINK THE GOOD PEOPLE OF MEXICO ARE WORTH STANDING UP FOR!

  6. Mexico is a failed state. Can anyone imagine this at a high security prison in the US? I have spent a few nights in a Mexican jail, and I have had friends who have done time there. They said it was fine. Much better and more lenient than in the US. I was in a holding cell for a brief time only (being drunk in Playa del Carmen), which sucked, big time, but they went through the system and did some time. They said as long as you could get hold of a little cash, you could have anything you wanted, within reason. Luxury shaving, food, phones, tv's, video games, conjugal visits, music, and of course, drink and drugs. They partied quite a bit. He said it wasn't fantastic or anything, but compared to what he expected when he first got arrested, it was a picnic.

The prison guards get paid peanuts, and so they beef up their income with favors. Everything in Mexico is corrupt.

  7. Mexico is NOT a failed state. They still have a functioning gov't and infrastructure. Somalia is a failed state.
The article should be titled "Inmate Dies in GUNFIGHT at Mexican Prison"..... i almost skipped over it thinking it was a regular everyday prison stabbing or something.

  9. I agree with the death penalty as a matter of fact just kill them on spot, take no prisoners. All the corrupted officials kill'em on spot too let them make the choice if they want life or death.

  10. in order to fail ...you need to have gotten somewhere in the first place ..the Mexican state...the institutions of government ,never really served the people in the first place ...it is only a tool of control for the ricos, who are mainly interested in keeping the common Mexican as powerless as possible ..providing minimal services while exploiting the population for all they are worth... a few greedy, unprincipled, corrupt, sadistic, violent men have always ruled Mexico...this is just the result of years of their dominance...meanwhile life goes on for the majority competing for the crumbs

Mexico is not a failed state...it was never a successful state in the first place

this is the way the whole world works to varying degrees..our birth rights have been stolen from us and are sold back to us incrementally , with compound interest...Mexico is just an extreme example

for all you anarchy lovers, this is your chance to experience your ideal form of government first hand...your fellow human being at his/her finest

...reassuring isn't it ...hurry and go before you miss it

what a choice...total police state versus total chaos

  11. The idea that Mexican jails can be a picnic that some USA dudes have is hilariously stupid. And so is the parallel dittoheaded idea that the US prison system is some marvel of grand sociological innovation. Listening to these types of comments makes one first want to laugh and then want to cry, because so many of our US citizens are such total dunces.

  12. Are you F'ing Kidding ME!!?!? Their prisons are but a mirage to give the appearance the gangsters are locked up when in reality, it's just a minor "time out".

Yes, it does appear that Mexico is a failed state.

  13. @ 10.22. No, Mexican jails CAN be, and ARE a picnic. I know from first hand experience, and not from making it up as I go along, or from talking convincingly of things I actually know very little about.
In the US, sure, when you are first arrested the place looks clean, and the officers know they have to do their job by the book. But if you get through the holding phase and get to go to a real jail, then you get lock down for 20+ hours a day, no phone, no tv or games. Drugs are available, but only in small quantities and very expensive.
    { A dose of marajuana is probably a small bud of no real weight but used as a currency or for sale, possibly saran wrapped.}

    No conjugal visits, or radio.

In Mexico, when you first go to jail for having been arrested, it is packed and filthy, and smells of vomit and blood, and if full of drunk Mayans who have been thrown in jail for being drunk. It is extremely intimidating and very dangerous. The police try to get money out of you, and they all work together to shake you down. They do not want to process you in the system at first, as they want some money. If you don't pay what they want, they process you, and get you in the system. The further in the system you go, the more in bribes you have to pay later on, as more officials have to be bribed, and more has to be "covered up", should they suddenly let you free. Not only is this uncivilized and breeds corruption, but it lets you know that if you have access to some money, that these police are bribable. Knowing they have a cheap price puts the criminal in a great position. Basically, they have no education, you are lucky if they can spell, they can hardly read, and they are easily manipulated. They want more money and an easy life, and the two of you can work it so that they take the bribes and do less work, and you get loads of perks.

But when you are through the system (either the crime was too big or the judge wants to see you for the bribe, or you were stubborn, or you were too poor to pay), as someone just said, it is just like time out. The sentences are always light. Sure, it is filthy and you have to share cells and stuff, but the security is slack, no-one demands obedience, you can walk around when ever you want, you have food brought in from outside as well as cigarettes, drink, drugs, phones, porn, female visits in private rooms, tv and other stuff. Just go read the list of what this guy had - grenades even. Really, compared to US jails, it IS a picnic.

In the US, you don't get to wear your favorite gang embossed Ralph Lauren polo shirt everyday.

If you are poor, then you will have a bad time. But $100 a week from the outside will see you live your time quite well, protected, with many freedoms, and access to as much media as you want. More money makes it even more passable.

IT IS NOT THE SAME AS A US JAIL. AT ALL. It is more like a picnic instead. Making the place dirty and smelly, full of corrupt officials looking to steal for a living, doesn't cut the mustard. To work, the guards have to function like their job means something, and of course, it means nothing to them in Mexico, as they do not have the character to make it work.

@ Lil Brito. Mexico is a failed state, as I previously mentioned. In the early 20th Century, Mexico was booming. It has been something of great modern historical importance in the past. It succeeded and has now failed.

Probably the biggest failure of all is the Mexicans themselves. Shouting out "we are not a failed state" is the biggest flaw of all. How can it get better when they convince themselves that it is not a failed state. Like an addict who doesn't admit their problem, as long as this emotional status quo remains then there is no hope for an improvement in the quality of Mexican life.

  14. NO MEXICO IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A FAILED STATE. In fact, according to studies, Mexico has less instability than most of South East Asia, Indonesia, and Africa.

  15. Anonymous 1:00PM, you seem absolutely glued to your delusional thinking that Mexican jails are a picnic while US ones are much worse. One can't really change the delusions of a guy like you.

You actually even use the argument that because some prisoners had grenades in the Mexican jails that that proves what a picnic the jail is compared to US ones! An absolutely clueless argument by you IMO. I would draw the complete opposite conclusion form your example. If a ever get arrest, I don't want fellow prisoners with grenades next to me. That's not my idea of a really nice picnic, Dude.

PLUS, you are equally delusional with your economic notions that Mexico is some sort of failed state. How is that though? The country has one of the top twenty performing economies i the world, AnonyMoe. Doesn't that register on your brain any? A failed state has no economy generally or it has some sort of advanced civil war situation going on. Mexico fails to be a failure these ways. Being sucked into the US governments idiotic international pretend war on drugs is stupid but it does not make by itself a country into a failed state. I don't care what Rush Limbug or Glenn Beck told you from their pulpits.
