Authorities investigate an attack on a drug rehab center in Juárez. At least four people were killed in attacks on two drug rehab centers Sunday in Juárez.

Four people were killed, seven people wounded and nearly 500 rounds were fired in separate attacks on a pair of drug rehab centers in Juárez on Sunday night, Chihuahua authorities said today.

Gunmen first attacked the Centro de Liberacion de adicciones on Ramon Aranda street. Three men were shot to death in the dormitories of the center. At least 10 armed men went into the clinic and opened fire, officials said.

Four people were killed, seven people wounded and nearly 500 rounds were fired in separate attacks on a pair of drug rehab centers in Jurez on Sunday night, Chihuahua authorities said today.

Those killed were identified as 16-year-old Luis Antonio Torres Corona and Tomas Rodriguez Gutierrez, 46. The third man had not been identified.

At nearly the same time, gunmen attacked the Centro de Rehabilitacion Alcance Victoria where they killed a man who appeared to be in his 40s, Chihuahua state police said.

Earlier reports stated that grenades were used in the attacks but a spokesman for the Chihuahua state attorney general's office said there were not grenade explosions.

Gunmen killed 18 people at a drug treatment center located two blocks from a police station and the Santa Fe international bridge in Ciudad Juarez, which lies just across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas, on Sept. 3, 2009.

The attacks on rehab centers apparently target individuals who are using the facilities to sell drugs on rivals’ turf, officials say.

Drug treatment centers in other parts of Mexico have also been targeted in recent years.

Gunmen killed 13 people on Oct. 24 at a drug rehabilitation center in the northwestern border city of Tijuana.

The attack occurred at the El Camino treatment center in east Tijuana, which is in Baja California state.

Ciudad Juarez, where more than 8,000 people have been murdered since 2008, has been plagued by drug-related violence for years.

More than 2,800 murders, according to press tallies, have been committed in Ciudad Juarez this year, while the number of killings totaled 2,754 last year.

  1. Juarez is just getting worse it seems, I don't know what the endgame is here. Are they trying to wait out Juarez/Vicente Cariilo? Vice Versa? What are either sides doing right now? It's been almost two years, full warfare, and neither side seems to have budged. I mean, the Juarez group is clearly low on cash, and resources, but they still are heavy enough to keep fighting, and I'm thinking have solid enough distribution in the US with the coke/heroin to maintain an income flow to fund the war.

It's no secret, but I can't see the business end of this anymore, let Vicente have Juarez, isn't Sinaloa firmly entrenched in enough points of entry, even in the state? This is personal, and vindictive and a terrible tragedy for the people of Juarez and the state.

  2. Windy city kid,

At this point J, I don't think it has much to do with the Linea & Sinaloa fighting for the Plaza. I really think it is the other "cartel" establishing their local dominance in the Mexico's drug trade & enforcing it... I believe La Familia touched on this group a few weeks ago. Juarez has @ least 140,000 drug addicts, that is alot of money and officials want a bigger piece of the pie.

  3. I don't buy too much into conspiracies, and that one by La Familia was flimsy as hell, but, going with the theory, what purpose does execueting people in rehab centers serve? Don't say to scare people into NOT going to rehab either.

This is Sinaloa Vs. Juarez 101, the rehab massacres are proven to be a tit for tat strategy used by both gangs and their enforcers.

  4. It depends on who are "they" trying to scare? Lets take a good look at who the majority of the people being killed are. Very low level guys... for instance a large number of them have been open street dealers (vendors, newspaper etc.) are getting killed. Why would these big guys be concerned with tadpoles? A lot of these murders of street vendors have been because they were told stop selling and they didn't listen. Many towns all across Mex have seen this happen since 2006, a heavily armed group moves into town, they find out who is distributing and then make them an ultimatum. Sell for Us and buy our shit only or you Die. Thousands have been murdered and thousands have disappeared since this all started happening. Best bet the shooting at the drug centers are connected to some similar scenario.

I totally agree that Sinaloa and Carrillo have beef that will never end, but to simply blame every low level killing on an on-going war between them is silly. First of all these guys know what parts of a "plaza" are truly important to the import & export of things. They will fight to death for them: Key border crossing points, airports like (DF), sea-ports etc. To fight over a street spot or tiendas that makes $500 a week sounds silly?

One of main facts that rarely gets touched on is the increase of drug abuse in Mexico. Smoking crack has been on the rise since 2006 in almost all parts of Mexico. Heroin use has steadily increased in the last ten years all along the border in Mexico. Charles Bowden and others have clearly stated before that certain government groups are fighting to control the domestic drug market in Mexico. A Great read is "murder city" by bowden. It touches on these topic a bit more.

  5. I think alot of these rehab hits are directed at people considered to be rats and defectors. These people are being used as intel gathering tools by authorities and are getting taken out as a result.

  6. the rehabs are taking customers... the message is ...don't go to the rehab...plus maybe some of these guys know a little something

  7. Alot of rehabs are known to be recruiting grounds on the side, as well as places for cartel members that are in the thick to lay low...Sadly REAL people trying to kick habits are mixed in the bunch.

There have been various noticias confirming these facts about rehab centers, especially in Juarez..
