Humberto Moreira Valdés, Governor of the state of Coahuila

The following post is based on an e-mail received by Borderland Beat from citizens of Coahuila, a state in Mexico that borders Southwest Texas. It is a call to action against the current governor of the state, Humberto Moreira Valdes of the PRI party, by citizens of the Torreon, which has been hit especially hard this year by the violence, crime and murders being perpetrated by organized criminal groups.

Many of his constituents despise the governor as the prototype of political corruption in Mexico today. He is rumored to own million dollar homes in San Antonio, Texas and Vail, Colorado. How these properties were obtained on a public servant’s salary is open to conjecture.

Governors are known as the “New Viceroys” of the Mexican political system. They hold and exercise much more power than U.S. Governors and in most cases are not answerable to the President of the Republic. They control access to public funds in a political system not known for its transparency.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FROM WHOM DO WE RESCUE TORREON?

We are living in very complicated times with violence throughout the country, which has intensified in Ciudad Juarez, but I think second place is the city of Torreón, where at least two deaths occur daily (and we only know of those that are published). But there are other crimes that do not come to light such as robbery, assault, kidnapping, rape, etc. that one learns of through acquaintances, that come ever closer, and that is very troubling.

I have a clear theory about what is happening, this theory is supported by various facts and historical analysis of the political situation in our country:

The original purpose of this violence was for the PRI to recover the presidency through agreements with the Governors and the involvement of people associated with drug trafficking. Thus began the destabilization of the country by shootings, executions and some well-planned kidnappings.

The theme of the slogan was: "The fault lies with Calderón and the federal government that triggered the war on drugs and us angel Governors have nothing to do with this, and we are victims ourselves”..

If you look, this has been the discourse of governors since this started, the same subject, and almost the same words.

But the majority of crimes occurred are of the order of the civil courts, i.e. the responsibility of state governments and mayors, but like most Mexicans we do not think, we do not analyze, we are easily bought off by the comments of the Governors, as communicated by the mass media.

What we are experiencing is the result of the PRI’s many years, through candid negotiations, of alliance with organized crime to remain in power. And now the situation is completely out of control.

Thank you "gentlemen" Governors who favor partisan interests over the people who you want to drive to exhaustion.

Let history demand the truth of how things are now because they are responsible and are now well hidden behind the trousers of President Calderon, the only president of Mexico who had the courage to decisively counter the drug addiction, corruption and lawlessness, but actually :

HIS STRATEGY HAS FAILED:

He never understood that the GOVERNORS SUCH AS MOREIRA were behind all the corruption that contaminates and harms the people.

IT IS TIME TO WAKE UP AND UNITE AND NOT BE DIVIDED BY THE INFLUENCE OF POLITICAL FORCES BECAUSE THIS IS HOW WE DO MORE DAMAGE TO OURSELVES.

IT IS NOW TIME THAT WE SETTLE ACCOUNTS WITH MAYOR OLMOS OF TORREON AND GOVERNOR MOREIRA AND DEMAND THAT THEY FIX THE SEVERE DAMAGE THEY HAVE CAUSED TO OUR CITY AND OUR STATE

WE ARE NOT WITH THE PAN OR THE PRD, MUCH LESS THE PRI. WE ARE PROUD PARTISANS OF MEXICO.

  3. Why in the hell can't Mexaco have disclosure rules requiring the audit of all office holders as to holdings, income, business partners, etc. It is a fact that Mexican politicians have a very high rate of corruption not necessarily from drug people but for anyone with $ very similar to the U.S. As long as being elected results in a get rich quick scheme office holders will be suspect. President Calderon has his plate full can you imagine him trying to get ethics legislation passed ?? Is there some form of internal affairs investigation system? I saw where the mayor of Cancun was indicted and maby a Govenor from Sinaloa the clean up needs to start at the top to have any effect.

  4. Great nepatism, political incest, hire your cousin,Govt contracts for kickbacks, pad the budget, buy land insider info, public works projects feeding frenzy, sounds like Texas, with the exception that in U.S.running for office is usually not a lethal undertaking. I truly believe that the reason Mexico is falling apart is the huge degree of corruption, everybody is for sale no concept of public duty bettering the country making Mexico a better safe place just like every other 3rd world shootout. The Drug Thugs are just one more symptom of ethical bankrupcy.

  5. Humberto Moreira gives the entrance to the Zetas in the state, he is one of the principal colaborators of these group, some people says the zeta´s finances his campaign, it was paid directly from (governors brother)Ruben Moreira´s neihgbor: Sigifredo Najera aka. "el canicón" one of the cruelest Z's he was captured in Saltillo(where moreira lives)in 2009 by federal troops, and governor moreira get mad because no one tells him about this operation (to let him scape)
Moreira is the owner of almost all the media in the state RCG tv, Zocalo news, these kind of media only say´s beatufil things about all the moreiras, defends criminals with its notes (zetas) and shit about the military forces (the only ones who protects us)
Now the things have changed in the state by the separation between Z´s and CDG´s and now the state is even more dangerous, by the moreiras alliance with his "compadres" Z´s

    Ruben Moreira.

These people aver very smart, and i will be very surprised to see that they have properties registered under their names in Texas. Maybe a corporation or some pseudo name...who knows, maybe under a tough texas lawyer. All are possibilities, but it is a fact they have million dollar homes in San Antonio and Inmense Villas in Colorado. God only knows where else in the world they could have properties as well.

  10. Finally there is a forum available where the maquiavelian, socialistic, populistic and tremendously profitable Moreira regime can be denounced. Moreira has made the state of Coahuila his kingdom disregarding the feelings or interests of the people who maintain the economy of Coahuila. Nobody can oppose him or his family and he has prepared the scenario for a long time rule of the most corrupt and dictatorial clan including his brothers and his son. Unfortunately the State of Coahuila, like other Mexican states is not beholden to the Federal government. We need to unite the thinking people of Coahuila to prevent a monarchy taking over our state.
